Emperor Penguin Migration Level H/I Written and Illustrated by Travis Schaeffer 1997-2012 n2y, Inc. Unique Learning System Leveled Book, Emperor Penguin Migration, Level H/I

It is winter in Antarctica. It is cold and windy. A group of birds huddle together on the ice to stay warm. They are large, black and white birds. They cannot fl y. What are these birds? They are Emperor Penguins. They are the largest penguins in the world.

Antarctica is a hard place to live. Not many animals live in Antarctica. Emperor Penguins are the only birds to live in this cold place. They must work together to survive.

Emperor Penguins feathers help them live in their environment. Their feathers help keep them warm. Emperor Penguins eat fi sh. They must fi nd fi sh in the icy, cold water. Their feathers protect them from the cold water when they look for fi sh.

Emperor Penguins are great swimmers. They swim through water to catch fi sh. But the penguins must be careful. Fish is not the only thing that lives in the water. Leopard Seals live there too. They attack Emperor Penguins. 4

During spring, Emperor Penguins start their migration south. Migration means to move. Their migration is not long, but it is very hard. Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. This makes their migration the coldest in the world.

Emperor Penguins work together. They huddle together to block the cold wind. The penguins on the outside of the huddle block the wind for the penguins on the inside. The penguins take turns sharing the warm middle of the huddle.

The Emperor Penguin migration stops in the summer. During summer, they mate and lay eggs. At the end of summer the eggs hatch into baby penguins. During fall, the parents watch and feed their babies.

During winter, Emperor Penguins start their migration back north. This ends their migration until next spring when they leave to migrate south again.

The Emperor Penguin migration is famous. These penguins work together to survive in the coldest place on Earth.
