Local News Lao inflation rate drops to 5.80 percent The Consumer Price Index (CPI) reached 115.80 points in March, putting the inflation rate at 5.80 percent for the same month, according to the Lao National Statistics Bureau. Economists say the main drivers of inflation are the increasing prices of electricity, water, cooking gas and food. Beef, vegetables and rice have also seen slight price rises in Vientiane due to a shortage of supply. They also said that despite the drop in inflation recorded in March, inflation was high compared to other countries in the region, adding that this was a common occurrence in countries that rely on the exploitation of natural resources. One of the measures taken by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce in response to the rising price of beef was to stop the export of cattle to Vietnam. In addition, the Vientiane Industry and Commerce Department set reference prices for pork and fish that vendors are expected to comply with. Power plants stimulate economic growth in rural areas The construction of power plants is not only ensuring sufficient energy supplies for Laos but is also helping poverty reduction and econom ic growth in rural areas. Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines Mr Viraphonh Viravong earlier this month led a team of ministry and Electricite du Laos officials to inspect power plants under construction in Luang Prabang and Xayaboury provinces. They observed that these projects were bringing new roads, bridges and commercial activities to rural areas, which are significant for driving poverty alleviation and economic growth. Developers are obliged by the government to build infrastructure and resettle displaced villagers. The government believes that building roads and improving transportation will boost commercial activities and bring much-needed development to rural areas. Thanks to these and other projects, they are bringing economic growth and prosperity to northern Laos. People can enjoy a better life, with electricity and water connections, roads and bridges, and easy access to clinics, schools and markets. The visiting officials also learnt that the power plants have been designed to incorporate the latest environmental safeguards and technology to mitigate undesirable impacts and maximise sediment flows, which are essential for agriculture. The project developers told the visiting officials that facilities will be built to ensure that water transportation can continue along both the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers. When these projects become operational in the next six or seven years, they will greatly increase Laos' capacity to generate electricity both for domestic consumption and export. At present, Laos has installed production capacity of about 3,200MW.
