NWEA and the Common Core Presenter: Laura Riley NWEA
Welcome Agenda and intended outcomes Understand about the Common Core State Standards and how they will affect your district. Understand the nuts and bolts of the day to day uses of MAP aligned to the Common Core Understand how the new Common Core MAP tests work with the Norming and Proficiency studies. Opportunity to ask questions about the MAP tests aligned to Common Core.
Common Core State Standards The Common Core standards are: Aligned with college and workforce expectations; Clear, understandable, and consistent; Rigorous in content and the application of knowledge through higher order skills; Built on strengths and lessons of previous state standards; Informed by standards in other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and Evidence based.
Objectives of CCSS Designed to make sure that all students graduate from high school with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in college and career. The standards provide students, parents, and teachers with a clear understanding of what students are expected to learn at every grade level, and as such, serve as a roadmap to quality education. The standards provide consistent learning goals for all students regardless of where they live.
Implementation of CCSS The standards establish what students need to learn, but do not tell teachers how to teach. Teachers will continue to create lesson plans and tailor instruction to the unique needs of the students in their classroom. Implementation decisions will remain local. Teachers and school leaders will determine how the standards are to be taught and will establish the curriculum, just as they currently do, allowing for continued flexibility and creativity.

What s Included in MAP Aligned to the Common Core? MAP aligned to the Common Core includes the following content areas: (MAP Includes both Survey Test and Survey with Goals Test) Mathematics 2 5 / Mathematics 6+ Language Usage 2 12 Reading 2 5/ Reading 6+ MAP for Primary Grades Survey w/goals
What is NOT included in MAP CCSS? End of Course Tests Science (but, until ready, districts can still give SC version for Science while testing MRL with Common Core) VI testing (paper pencil) still nationally aligned, but not specific to CCSS. NOTE: NOT available in the new Web based MAP system.
Coverage and Alignment Coverage and Alignment The initial version of the tests covers only content of the Common Core State Standards that can be assessed by using hand aligned multiple-choice items. These multiple choice hand- aligned items have been identified by the NWEA Content Services Team. This has resulted in a tight alignment to the standards at a granular level in each content area. DesCartes Common Core V2 (Released on Aug. 8, 2011) Extended Goal Structure Document (Available on our website) This document contains specific language that describes what has been included in each goal.

South Carolina is aligning with SBAC (SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium) SMARTER Balanced states collectively educate about 23 million public K-12 students. These states share a commitment to develop a next generation assessment system aligned to the Common Core State Standards. The SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium is working to develop a high-quality assessment system that helps all students succeed in college and careers. The work of the Consortium is guided by the belief that a highquality assessment system can provide resources and tools for teachers and schools to improve instruction and help students succeed. FAQ s about NWEA s CCSS When should our districts consider switching over to CCSS MAP tests? You may change when it s the best fit/time for YOUR DISTRICT. Consider is your state transition schedule. Many of our states plan to be fully implemented to the Common Core by the 2013 2014 school year. Can we give SOME students the CCSS version and other students the state version that we currently give? Yes. You may test any grade level you wish on Common Core and any other grade levels on your state version.
FAQ s about NWEA s CCSS What subjects and grade levels will be covered by the MAP CCSS tests? Our MAP Common Core tests will cover the subjects of reading, language, and mathematics. Science is in a future release. We do not have Social Studies Our Common Core assessments may be given to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. When must we inform NWEA of our choice to move to CCSS or to stay with our state version? We would like to know your decision about one two weeks prior to your district s downloading of the next season of data.
FAQ s about NWEA s CCSS How does CCSS affect student percentile ranges? It doesn t. But it does affect instruction. Teachers will use the goal strand information from the CCSS tests to help identify areas of need as they pertain to the domains and standards of the new Common Core. What about proficiency to the PASS test?
Proficiency for Reading
Do the 2011 Norms apply to the Common Core aligned tests? The 2011 norms are carefully constructed to be independent of any specific test. Performance on any MAP test that comprises a broad sampling of NWEA test items can appropriately reference the 2011 NWEA norms. Therefore, the 2011 norms will apply to NWEA CCSS aligned MAP tests.
How Will Proficiency Be Reported? Correlation to CCSS Assessment not ready yet. Why? CCSS Assessment data do not exist. Our cut percentiles for proficiency to use until the CCSS assessments are given and cut scores determined: Below Standards: < 40 th percentile Proficient: 40 th to 70 th percentile Advanced: > 70 th percentile
FAQ s about NWEA s CCSS How will proficiency to CCSS be forecasted? NWEA cannot accurately predict proficiency to data that don t exist. Until students are scored under the new CCSS, we will use the 40/70 cuts. How can we make the change to Common Core MAP tests? The process is simple. Just call/email your support person at NWEA
FAQ s-cost and reports Is there an additioanl cost? No. The cost for CCSS tests will be the same as the cost you currently pay for your subscription with MAP. No additional costs will be incurred. How will Reports change if we switch to Common Core? Teacher reports and all other reports that list goal strands will now list the goal strands as defined by the Common Core instead of the strands aligned to your state goal structures.
