compactor baler Fox Covert, t: +44 (0)1485 528977 West Rudham, Kings Lynn, e: contact@thewastewizard.co.uk Norfolk, PE31 8SY w. www.thewastewizard.co.uk WASTE WIZARD: CAPACITY/COST PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS Executive Summary This paper sets out to capture and analyse capacity and cost performance data for the Waste Wizard compactor baler system. The analysis sets out to quantify and compare the performance, in volume capacity and cost terms, of the Waste Wizard, a 8 yard general waste skip and a 1,100 ltr eurobin general waste bin - of the type used in a typical light industrial yard. The trial was conducted over a number of days at the premisis of GJL Animal Feeds in Fakenham, Norfolk 1. The site uses a 4x bin waste segregation system 2, including a 2x bin Waste Wizard modular system. For the purposes of the trial an 8 yard general waste skip was hired in 3 and filled with a mix of cardboard and recoverable plastic (see fig 1). In addition, the yard s 1100 ltr eurobin general waste bin 4 (fig 2) was also used to compare capacity. The yard uses a number of 1.5 ton fork lift trucks, any of which may be used to operate the Waste Wizard. The trial was conducted when the yard was in use by the general public and presented no H&S issues in terms of operability. The trial also sought the views of the yard staff to seek to identify any cultural or operational issues with the introduction of the Waste Wizard within the Business s waste management operation. The result of the trial showed that the Waste Wizard was able to reduce the volume of waste in the 8 yard skip by approximately 80%, with a similar saving for the 1100ltr eurobin. 1 GJL have used the Waste Wizard for a number of years and agreed to support the trial once it became aparent that local skip hire companies were unwilling to assist in the trial. 2 Recoverable plastic (wrap, bags, sheeting), cardboard, wood and general waste. 3 From G Haller Skip Hire, Fakenham @ 142 + VAT. 4 On contract hire from Norfolk County council @ 109.20 pa. With 26x collections pa @ 444.60 pa.

fig 1. fig 2. The Trial. 1: Reducing recoverable waste in a 1100 ltr eurobin. The eurobin was filled to capcity with recoverable plastic and the contents emptied into a Waste Wizard to find the capacity, in terms of ther number of eurobins to a Waste Wizard bale (fig 3-7). It was found to take 5x full bins to make a 160 kg bale of recovered plastic. A reduction by volume of 80% and a saving 5 of 355.68 pa per bin. fig 3. fig 4. fig 5. fig 6. fig 7. 2: Reducing recoverable waste in an 8 yard skip. The 8 yard skip was filled to capacity with a mix of recoverable waste 6 (fig 8). This waste was then segregated (card & plastics) and emptied into 2x Waste Wizards, configured in a segregation system (fig 9). fig 8. fig 9. 5 Based upon NCC contract commercial waste costs to GJL. See enclosure 1. 6 Light and heavy cardboard, paper, recoverable plastics (wrap, bags, sheeting).

The contents of the skip compacted down into one and half bales of recoverable material (1x plastics and half a bale of cardboard: figs 10-19), requiring 3 compaction actions per bin (figs 14, 17). fig 10. fig 11. fig 12. fig 13. fig 14. fig 15. fig 16. fig 17. fig 18. fig 19. 3. Backfilling the 8 yard skip. The empty skip was then back filled with 7x full bales of recovered plastic and cardboard 7 (fig 20,21) and collected the next day by the skip hire company. The process resulted in a reduction, by volume, of almost 80%. Due to their use of the Waste Wizard, GJL no longer use skips. Although, it was calculated that if they were used, GJL would save approximately 3,976 net pa on reduced skip hire by compacting their waste 8 and 4,900 net pa if skip use were eliminated 9. fig 20. fig 21. GJL transfer their baled, recovered waste to the local recycling centre using their own fleet of curtain sided 7.5T trucks 10 ; moving the bales only when load and route coincide with that of the recycling centre, thus negating the need for specialist waste transfer vehicles and minimising waste transfer charges. The bales can also be transferred by SWB drop-side, panel van, or similar. 7 From the Yard s supply of bales awaiting disposal to the local waste management centre. 8 Based on a (conservative) 1x bale of recovered waste produced per week (52 / 1.5 = 35 skips @ 140 net ( 4,900)) 9 GJL have eliminated skip use at their site for the last four years. 10 Using the same existing on-site forklift used to operate the yard s Waste Wizard.

Operating the Waste Wizard: Interviewing the Yard Staff. The trial also sought to interview the staff of GJL to seek their views on operating the system, especially the yard-hands, who have the daily task of operating the Waste Wizard as part of GJL s waste segregation system. The views of the MD and Site Manager were, as expected, very positive; both citing the reliability, ease of use and economic case for the Machine 11 The Chief Yard Hand (Mr Peter Colley, fig 22) was then interviewed for his views on the introduction and operation of the Waste Wizard 12. He stated that there was some initial resistance to using the Waste Wizard when it was first purchased 4 years ago. He felt the issue was cultural, in that the staff were used to the easy convenience of dumping all yard waste into a general waste skip with the resulting skip hire cost IRO of 5K net pa. Mr Colley then stated, that with clear leadership and direction from the GJL Site Manager 13, the site s waste segregation system was introduced and the Yard Staff came to see the benefits of the system, which Mr Colley defined as; Low training burden the operating system is very simple, requiring only 4-5 operating evolutions before the operator is at optimum efficiency. Ease of use of the system the staff has reduced a full Waste Wizard operating evolution (move, bale, strap-up, pallet and recover) to 20 min. Improved yard management; tidier with little wind-fly debris around the yard, smaller operating footprint, with the Wizards being able to be easily and swiftly moved around the yard to the source of the waste, when un-packing, unloading etc. Obvious savings; in recoverable waste, reduced general waste eurobin use and elimination of skip hire. fig 22. 11 Gary Luck, MD GJL Animal Feeds at http://www.thewastewizard.co.uk/clients/ 12 This was done in the light of the difficulty encountered during the Balfour Beatty Rotherham depot trial, with yard staff reluctant to use the trail Waste Wizard; BB staff preferring to use the on-site general waste skip. 13 Including the provision of staff training, yard signage and firm yard management.

Conclusion. The trial set out to capture and analyse capacity and cost performanace data for the Waste Wizard compactor baler system - to quantify and compare the performance, in volume capacity and cost terms, against a 8 yard general waste skip and a 1,100 ltr eurobin general waste bin - of the type used in a typical light industrial yard. The trial, conducted at a site which already uses a 4x bin waste segregation system, including a 2x bin Waste Wizard modular system, proved that the Waste Wizard was able to reduce the volume of waste in a full-tocapacity 8 yard skip by approximately 80%, with a similar saving for the 1100ltr eurobin; achieving a projected saving of approximately 4,900 net pa in skip hire cost and 355.68 pa per eurobin. We therefore estimate that the use of the Waste Wizard has saved the yard IRO of 21,000 net over the last four years of its use. GJL s Waste Wizard has incurred no additional ongoing cost over the last 4 years of use, save for the re-supply of baling strap as required. The trial also sought the views of the yard staff, to seek to identify any cultural or operational issues with the introduction of the Waste Wizard, within the Business s waste management operation. Although some initial resistance was identified - to using the Waste Wizard when it was first purchased 4 years ago. The issue was cultural and transitional, and easily overcome with good communication and clear leadership. The machine is now seen as easy to operate, effortless to maintain and providing obvious efficiencies in terms of yard management and cost.
