Sustainability Report May 2013 To maintain an industry-leading approach to sustainable waste practices through reasonable and efficient management of our resources, early adoption of technology, and a clear focus on continuous improvement to current practices.
Welcome to a Cleaner World In 2012, we launched our first Sustainability Summary in which we invited our customers, our partners, and the communities we impact to review how Waste Industries had committed to providing a cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable world. The summary, available to anyone online at our corporate website, discussed how we at Waste Industries had approached sustainable business practices since our founding over 40 years ago. Today, one year after the launch of our first sustainability report, we are releasing our first sustainability report in which we will proudly share our ongoing efforts on an annual basis. This report will focus on all elements of our work over the past year, including both customerfocused sustainability, company-focused sustainability, charitable contributions to local communities, efforts at decreasing our environmental impact, and how we handle waste and recycling streams to provide the absolute highest level of service to our customers. While our company has always been completely committed to providing sustainable solutions since our founding, we are also never satisfied with saying OK, we have done enough. Every single day we restructure our priorities, refine our processes, and overhaul our fleets to maximize our effectiveness while simultaneously decreasing our environmental impact. It is with great pleasure that we invite you to review our sustainability report, where we hope to show you just how truly committed we are as more than just a company, but as individuals promising to build a more sustainable future. So to our friends, family, colleagues, and communities: Welcome to a cleaner world! Learn more at:
Sustainable Billing One of the most wasteful methods of billing is the paper bill. Our residential customers are billed every quarter, meaning that four times a year from initial delivery of the bill to returning of payment, paper bill customers use two sheets of paper for the bill, an envelope to receive their bill, an envelope to send back their payment, and a check for payment. If you multiply that by our quarterly billing cycle, each customer is using 24 sheets of paper a year just to pay for their waste. We make every effort we can to ensure that paper is recycled, but many customers forget and that paper inevitably ends up in the trash along with other forms of solid waste. e-billing ,000 customers switched to e-billing, saving: 4 bills per quarter 1 check per bill 2 sheets of paper per bill 2 envelopes per bill 250 trees per year To prevent wasted paper and ensure we are maximizing our effectiveness in providing sustainable solutions to our customers, Waste Industries introduced our e-billing system. By 2012, we had 120,000 customers signed up for e-billing. Thanks to the contributions of our customers in switching to a fully electronic billing system, we effectively stopped the use of 720,000 pieces of aper in a single year. e-billing 2013 Added an additional 25,000 customers to e-billing. Saving 870,000 pieces of paper per year. In 2013 we have continued to grow our e-billing platform, proudly hosting 145,000 customers that are contributing to a paper reduction of 870,000 sheets of paper, every single year! Sign up for e-billing at: siteregistration.aspx
Running Cleaner with CNG WASTE INDUSTRIES A Sustainable Alternative to Waste
Cleaner Air with CNG In 2012, we proudly converted our entire Durham, North Carolina fleet to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), a fuel source that produces 50% less nitrogen oxide and 80% less carbon monoxide. This transition led every Durham serviced residential waste, residential recycling, commercial waste, and commercial recycling customer to a zero dependence on diesel fuel for all of their waste and recycling collections over the past year! Our commitment to providing a cleaner way to collect your waste and recycling has only just begun. In early 2013, we unveiled a DURHAM, NC Converted 21 trucks to CNG. Removed 20 Diesel trucks from operation. Prevented burning of 240,000 gallons of Diesel fuel per year. Decreased CO2 emissions by over 1,900 tons per year. compressed natural gas, effectively removing over 70 diesel powered trucks and replacing them with compressed natural gas. Every branch that we transition produces a cleaner, quieter, and more efficient fleet. CNG trucks run quieter, decreasing noise levels by over 50%, have a 100% water pollution reduction level, and decrease air pollutants by values ranging from 30-90% depending on the particular pollutant. second CNG project that had been almost a year in the making. In Brunswick County, we converted every single commercial and residential truck in our fleet to compressed natural gas, removing 30 diesel dependent trucks. Even now our fleet is continuing to expand. We are currently in development to convert our entire Raleigh residential and commercial fleet to BRUNSWICK, NC Converted 30 trucks to CNG. Removed 30 Diesel trucks from operation. Prevented burning of 464,364 gallons of Diesel fuel per year. Decreased CO2 emissions by over 3,650 tons per year. We are exceptionally proud of our Compressed Natural Gas fleets, and at every unique unveiling, we invite members of the public to our branch to join us in turning on our CNG valve, immediately slicing back our CO2 emissions to help provide a cleaner world. 6 A World of Recycling We have always been proud to provide recycling services that couple any waste collection service to minimize the impact of materials in our local landfills. Through effective education programs and a constantly available collection schedule, countless thousands of customers from commercial entities to residential homes participate in our recycling program. In 2012, we recycling countless materials, including aluminum cans, steel cans, glass, plastic, newspapers, cardboard, various blends of paper, Over 13,000 bailed tons commingled recycling, steel, aluminum, scrap Over 35,000 loose tons metals, copper, and tires. Every single one of these items were taken to specialist processing Totaling over 50,000 tons facilities where they were stripped down and recycled to be reused in other products. Thanks to our customers continued dedication to recycling, we are continuously expanding our recycling efforts to include materials that it was not possible to recycle in the past. Cardboard 2012 Thanks to the contributions of our commercial and residential customers, in 2012 we collected over 50,000 tons of cardboard and 90,000 tons of commingled recyclable material. This let us hit over 140,000 tons of recycled material that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill! Commingle 2012 Heavy residential recycling that includes glass, plastic, paper, and more. Totaled over 90,000 tons Total 2012 Over 145,000 tons Learn more at: recycling-services.aspx
