Because of printing limitations, actual hinge color may vary from color shown. Wood Types Each wood type (or specie) has unique color variations, textures, patterns and natural characteristics. Hard Maple Valued for its strength, beauty and resistance to wear. Texture is fine with a uniform grain and a fairly clear white color. Best when left natural with a clear seal coating. Knotty Pine Soft, light wood with straight grains. Natural rustic look with sporadic knots. Tulip Poplar Moderately light, soft wood type. Very natural looking when clear sealed; takes on a distinguished look when stained in dark colors. Because its texture is fine and even, poplar also provides a smooth paintable surface. Knotty Alder Normally light brown with hues of reds or peach; knots vary in size, shape and color. Its softer nature makes it receptive to a variety of stains and finishes Clear Pine Soft textured wood. Straw color with a straight, uniform grain. 9 Birch Strong, heavy wood. Color is usually medium brown heartwood with a light cream sapwood. Texture is fine and even; grain is typically straight. Best when left natural with a clear seal coating. Cherry Popular hardwood due to its warmth and rich personality. Color ranges from nearly white to light red to dark reddish brown; ages naturally. Texture is fine; grain can include delicate figuring, such as small spots, flecks and beauty knots. Red Oak One of the most commonly available domestic hardwoods. Color ranges from pale reddish brown to light brown. Texture is medium fine with a uniform grain. Best when treated with a colored stain ranging from light to dark
Handling and Field Finishing To ensure that your doors are handled and finished with care, we offer the following suggestions. Please note that this list includes highlighted information only. Please contact your finish supplier for detailed instructions. When handling doors, clean gloves are recommended. Doors should be lifted and carried, not dragged, to avoid potential damage. Doors should not be subjected to abnormal heat, extreme dryness or humid conditions. For storage purposes, doors should be set flat in a dry, well-ventilated location and at least 3-1/2 off the floor. If stacking multiple doors, a protective covering should be used for the top and bottom doors, still allowing air to circulate around the stack. Doors should be allowed to reach room temperature and stabilize for a period of 24 hours prior to installation. The protective film on French doors may assist in the finishing process. Care should be used when removing the film. The tempered glass, required by law, may become scratched by the use of sharp objects or abrasive cleaners. Before finishing, all doors must be sanded appropriately. Sand doors sufficiently to eliminate handling marks, raised grain, burnishes and other blemishes. When using dark stains, thorough initial sanding is even more important to reduce blotchiness and eliminate scratches. Sand door components with the grain to avoid scratches. It is the responsibility of the field finisher to determine the proper grit of sandpaper and the duration of face preparation necessary to make the appearance of the doors acceptable to the owner. After sanding, the door should be cleaned with a soft cloth to remove all debris. Do not use any abrasive materials. Compatible finishes are highly recommended from base to topcoat. If possible, select the same manufacturer for all finishing products and follow the specifications provided. Prior to staining, apply a pre-stain wood conditioner to promote a uniform appearance. (Your finish supplier can recommend the correct product.) With every coat, all exposed wood surfaces must be sealed, including the top and bottom rails. All six surfaces must be sealed. Oil-based sealers or primer coats provide the best base coat for field finishing. Water-based coating on unfinished wood may highlight joints and raise wood grain, and should be verified for use by your chosen finish supplier. Certain wood species, such as oak, react adversely to particular finishes (due to natural chemicals found in the wood). Prior to full application, test for stain compatibility in an inconspicuous area. Notify your finish supplier if an undesirable appearance is detected and discontinue the finishing process until a solution is found. A clear finish is recommended for lighter wood species, such as maple and birch. Due to the natural characteristics of these wood types, dark finishes may appear blotchy or uneven. The door manufacturer cannot be responsible for the appearance of field finished doors. After each coat is applied, allow for adequate drying time. Confirm smoothness and color are correct before applying the next coat. The door manufacturer is not responsible for the natural variations in color and wood grain that may become highlighted during the finishing process. All questions regarding the proper application of sealers and finishes should be directed to your chosen finish supplier. 10
