Software Installation Instructions for the 1-year Student License of ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 1. Open the software envelope and remove the DVD. Load the DVD into the computer s DVD player. 2. The installation program will automatically begin and display the splash screen as depicted to the right. Software loaded into a DVD drive usually executes the installation program. If the splash screen does not appear you will need to start the installation program manually. Select the Start button in the lower corner of the computer screen. Select Run (located to the upper right from the Start button.
The window to the right appears. Select the Browse button. Search for the DVD drive (the letter of the drive may be different the drive depicted in the graphic). Select ESRI.exe. Select the Open button in the lower right corner. Select Open. The splash screen should appear on the computer screen. 3. Select ArcEditor.
4. Select Install ArcGIS Desktop. 5. 6. Select the option I accept the license agreement. 7. If you have available disk space on the C:\ drive, select the Complete option. All extensions will be installed along with the suite of ArcGIS Desktop programs. If disk space is limited, select either the Typical or Custom option.
8. 9. The software installation process begins. 10. ArcGIS Desktop will take several minutes to install. 11. After the software installation is done, select Register Now. The computer should be connected to the Internet to register the software with ESRI.
12. Select option I have installed ArcEditor and need to register the software. 13. Select the option Register now using the Internet (Recommended). 14. Fill in the registration information. Entries with an asterisk ( * ) must be completed.
15. Fill in the registration information on the next panel. Entries with an asterisk ( * ) must be completed. 16. Each copy of the 1-year student license for ArcGIS Desktop contains a unique registration number. The number can be found in the media envelope where you found the software DVD in step 1 (see graphic to the right). Carefully copy the registration code into the Registration Wizard. Compare the registration code entered with the original registration code printed inside the media envelope. If the registration code is a match with the original registration code, select Next.
17. If you chose to do a complete install of ArcGIS Desktop (see step 7), select I would like to evaluate one or more of the following extensions or a limited period of time. Select all of the extensions by selecting the box to the left of each extension. You may not use all of the extensions but it will save you time later if you decided to install an extension that was not selected in this step. 18. It is important in this step to have the computer connected to the Internet. As each step of the registration process is completed, a check mark will appear. When the registration process is completed it is no longer necessary to have the computer connected with the Internet. ArcGIS Desktop will run without a connection to the Internet. Select Finish. 19. Removing ArcGIS Desktop from the computer is similar to the installation steps presented in this document. Removing the software may be necessary if there was an error in the way the software was installed on the computer. Go through steps 1, 2, 3 and 4. There are three options available: modify the current installation of ArcGIS Desktop (such as adding an extension that was not included in step 17); repair the current installation (automatic check of all required components necessary for ArcGIS Desktop to function); and remove (uninstall) the software from the computer. Select Remove.
20. Select Next to start the removal of the software from the computer. 21. The removal may take several minutes to complete. 22. Select Finish when the removal process is completed. 23. Although Python is automatically installed on the computer during the installation of ArcGIS Desktop, PythonWin is not. PythonWin is used to create geoprocessing scripts using the Python language. It is not necessary to install PythonWin if the development of geoprocessing scripts will not occur. Open Windows Explorer and locate the DVD drive. (The location of the DVD drive may not be the same as depicted in the graphic to the right.) Navigate to the PythonWin directory located in the Desktop directory.
24. Double-click on the file pywin32-210.win32- py2.5.exe. Select Next to begin the installation process of PythonWin. 25. 26.
27. Select Finish when the installation is completed. PythonWin is available in the directory of programs for Python. 28. In rare situations, an error message may appear stating that either msvcr71.dll or mfc71.dll is missing and PythonWin may not have been installed properly. The error message is generated due to the absence of the file(s) in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Open Windows Explorer and go into the C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\bin directory. Both files are located here. Copy the missing file (msvcr71.dll or mfc71.dll) from the C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\bin directory and paste into the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Reinstall PythonWin. Start PythonWin to verify that the software is functional.
