7 MAN Introduction The Velocity Web Console (VWC) enables you to use Velocity through a remotely connected device. The VWC provides much of a Velocity client computer s functionality without the need to install the client software. All the device needs is a web browser and access to the Velocity server or workstation, via either the Internet or a private network. For the Velocity 3.5 release, the VWC was tested using the Internet Explorer (version ) and the Firefox (version ) browsers. Before you can install and use the VWC, you must first install Microsoft s Internet Information Services (IIS). The VWC is an optional feature. If your organization is not comfortable providing remote access to your access control system, do not install IIS or enable the VWC. Prerequisite: Installing IIS Before you can use the Velocity Web Console, you must first install IIS on the Velocity server or workstation. To install IIS on Windows Server (before a Server installation of Velocity): 1. From your Windows Server Start menu, launch Control Panel. 2. If you are viewing by Category: click the Turn Windows Features on or off link (at the bottom of the left column). If you are viewing by Small Icons or Large Icons: click Programs and Features, and then click the Turn Windows Features on or off link (in the left pane). 3. In the resulting Server Manager window, click the Features item (in the left pane), and then click the Add Features link. 4. In the resulting Add Features Wizard, scroll down and check the SMTP Server box. Introduction 1

8 HIRSCH Velocity Web Console Guide 5. In the resulting dialog that asks Add role services and features required for SMTP Server?, click the Add Required Role Services button. 6. In the Add Features Wizard, click Next. 7. On the Web Server (IIS) page of the Add Features Wizard, click Next. 8. If necessary, on the Select Role Services page of the Add Features Wizard expand the Web Server folder and the Management Tools folder to display the available options. 9. Under Web Server, select the Common HTTP Features of: Static Content Default Document Directory Browsing HTTP Errors 10. Scroll down, and under Management Tools, select: IIS Management Console IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility IIS 6 WMI Compatibility IIS 6 Scripting Tools IIS 6 Management Console 11. Scroll back up, and under Application Development, select ASP.NET. (If you receive a dialog that asks Add role services required for ASP.NET?, click the Add Required Role Services button.) 2 Prerequisite: Installing IIS

9 MAN Verify that you have selected all the options highlighted in the boxes below, then click Next. 13. On the Confirm Installation Selections page of the Add Features Wizard, click Install. On the Installation Progress page of the Add Features Wizard, progress messages are displayed until the installation is complete. Prerequisite: Installing IIS 3

10 HIRSCH Velocity Web Console Guide 14. On the Installation Results page of the Add Features Wizard, verify that the installation succeeded, and click Close. 15. In the Server Manager window, verify that the Web Server (IIS) role was installed. You can then close the Server Manager window and the Control Panel. After IIS is installed, you can choose to install the Velocity Web Console during Velocity installation. For more about this, refer to Installing Windows Server 2008 R2 on page 10 of the Velocity 3.5 Installation Guide. If you choose not to enable the Velocity Web Console at that time, you can run the vwcsetup.exe file later to install the Velocity Web Console after Velocity has been installed. (This file is located in the folder where you installed Velocity, which by default is C:\Program Files (x86)\hirsch Electronics\Velocity.) To install IIS on Windows 7 (before a Workstation installation of Velocity): 1. From your Windows 7 Start menu, launch Control Panel. 2. If you are viewing by Category: click the Programs link, and then click the Turn Windows Features on or off link (in the Programs and Features category). If you are viewing by Small Icons or Large Icons: click Programs and Features, and then click the Turn Windows Features on or off link (in the left pane). 3. In the resulting Windows Features dialog, expand the Internet Information Services folder to reveal the available options. 4 Prerequisite: Installing IIS

12 HIRSCH Velocity Web Console Guide A progress dialog informs you that Windows is making the requested feature changes. When Windows has finished making the changes, it closes the progress dialog and the Windows Features dialog. 5. Close the Control Panel. After IIS is installed, you can choose to install the Velocity Web Console during Velocity installation. For more about this, refer to Installing Windows 7 or Windows XP Professional on page 17 of the Velocity 3.5 Installation Guide. If you choose not to install the Velocity Web Console during Velocity installation, you can install it later (as explained in the next topic). 6 Prerequisite: Installing IIS

13 MAN Installing the Velocity Web Console After Installing Velocity and IIS If you did not install the Velocity Web Console when you installed Velocity, you can install it later. (Make sure that you have installed IIS before performing the following procedure.) To install the Velocity Web Console: 1. Locate the vwcsetup.exe file. (This file is located in the folder where you installed Velocity, which by default is C:\Program Files (x86)\hirsch Electronics\Velocity.) 2. Double-click the vwcsetup.exe file to run it. 3. In the resulting Velocity Web Console Installer dialog, enter the Velocity services account and the Velocity services password, and click OK. NOTE: The default Velocity services account is named VelocityServices. Be sure to prefix the account name with the computer name or domain name where you previously installed Velocity, and a backslash character (such as VelocityServer\VelocityServices ). 15 MAN Opening the Velocity Web Console After IIS, Velocity, and the VWC have been installed on your server or workstation, you can launch the VWC from any authorized networked device in this way: 1. If not already procured, obtain a Velocity user ID and password from your Velocity administrator. 2. On your network-connected device, open your web browser. 3. In the browser s address field, enter an URL with the following form: where <ServerAddress> is one of the following: IP address machine name, when the Velocity server or workstation is in the same network domain as your device localhost, only when you re testing the VWC directly on the Velocity server or workstation A page like the following example appears: 4. Any other user account that will be using the VWC must be added into both Velocity and the VWC. 5. Click Login. If your user ID and password were accepted by the Velocity server, the Velocity Web Console home page appears, like in this example: Logout link Settings links Options links Notice that the banner at the top of each page contains several links that enable you to navigate between the top-level pages of the Velocity Web Console. 17 MAN Using the Velocity Web Console The Velocity Web Console includes several pages which can be accessed by clicking on a link in the page banner, and following the link (and sub-links in some cases) to the required page. The links are: Link My Settings Admin logout Brief Description Click this link (in the upper right corner) to view or change your settings for displaying information. For more about this page, refer to My Settings on page 13. If you are a Velocity administrator, click this link (in the upper right corner) to display a menu of links that enable you to: manage your Velocity server (by deleting it or editing its settings) manage your locations (by adding a location, deleting a location, or editing its settings) manage the display of your enrollment fields manage your Velocity Web Console operators (by adding or deleting an operator, or editing his account privileges) view or change the settings for some system-wide preferences For more about these pages, refer to Admin on page 15. Click this link to monitor system activity. For more about this page, refer to Monitoring on page 24. Device Control Click this link to display a Velocity system tree, which you can expand to select a component, and then perform control functions on that component. For more about this page, refer to Device Control on page 32. Help Click this link to display information about the version of this Velocity Web Console. 19 MAN My Settings When you click the My Settings link in the upper right corner, a page like this appears: Using the Velocity Web Console 13

20 HIRSCH Velocity Web Console Guide Use this page to specify how certain information will be displayed in the VWC (which is important when you only have a small screen on your mobile device). These are personal settings available to any qualified operator. You can specify display settings for the following items: Enrollment Fields Velocity Logs Velocity Web Console Logs Transaction Log Fields Active Alarms Log Fields Acknowledged Alarms Log Fields After you ve changed any setting, you must click the relevant Apply button to apply the change. 14 Using the Velocity Web Console

21 MAN Admin If you are a Velocity administrator, when you click the Admin link in the upper right corner, a menu of links is displayed which enable you to perform various administrative tasks. Manage Velocity Servers Select this link to display a page that enables you to manage your Velocity server. If you click the Cancel button, the Admin Options page is displayed. After you select the server, you can Delete it or Edit its settings. Using the Velocity Web Console 15

22 HIRSCH Velocity Web Console Guide CAUTION: The VWC currently supports only one Velocity server. If you delete that server, you will have to reinstall the VWC. 16 Using the Velocity Web Console

23 MAN Manage Locations Select this link to display a page that enables you to manage your locations. If you click the Cancel button, the Admin Options page is displayed. If you click the Add button, a page is displayed that enables you to add a location. After you select a location, you can Delete it or Edit its properties. Using the Velocity Web Console 17

25 MAN Manage Web Console Operators Select this link to display a page that enables you to manage your Velocity Web Console operators. If you click the Cancel button, the Admin Options page is displayed. If you click the Add button, a page is displayed that enables you to add an operator and specify his account privileges. After you select an operator, you can Delete his account from the list of VWC operators, or Edit his account privileges. CAUTION: Initially, only the user account that installed the VWC exists. Be careful not to delete that account when it is the only one, or you will not be able to reconnect to the VWC again. Using the Velocity Web Console 19

26 HIRSCH Velocity Web Console Guide If the computer is a member of a domain, the Login Domain field displays the domain name. If the computer is not a member of a domain, the Login Domain field displays the machine name. 20 Using the Velocity Web Console

27 MAN Manage Admin Settings Select this link to display a page that enables you to view or change the settings for some system-wide preferences for the different pages that appear while using the VWC. If you click the Cancel button, the Admin Options page is displayed. If you make any changes, click the Save button to apply your changes and have them saved to the Velocity server overseeing this Velocity Web Console. Using the Velocity Web Console 21

28 HIRSCH Velocity Web Console Guide Enrollment When you click the Enrollment link, a page like this example appears: This page displays the current list of users recognized by this system sorted by name, group affiliation, agency code, and system code. 22 Using the Velocity Web Console

29 MAN To enroll a new card or code holder from the remote location, click the Add button. A page like this example appears (in another browser window): Use this page to enter card or code holder data in much the same way that you would enter data from the Enrollment Manager. This includes the addition of images, credentials, PIV card data, and other information required to enroll this person. (Because the VWC cannot connect to an enrollment station, you will have to enter the information manually.) After you have entered the data required, click the Apply button. When you re completely finished, click OK to return to the main Enrollment page. Using the Velocity Web Console 23

30 HIRSCH Velocity Web Console Guide You can filter for a specific user or group of users by clicking the Search button. A group of fields and buttons for searching is added to the top of the page, as shown in this example: Select the field, condition, and search value you require to narrow your search, then click the Search button. The list of users displayed on the page changes to reflect the terms you entered. For more information about enrollment, refer to the topics covering the Enrollment Manager in the Velocity online help. Monitoring When you click the Monitoring link, a page is displayed with a menu of links which enable you to perform various monitoring tasks. 24 Using the Velocity Web Console

31 MAN You can also activate one of these monitoring options by hovering your cursor over the Monitoring link until a menu pops up, then navigating to the desired sub-option and clicking on it. Using the Velocity Web Console 25

You can filter this log to limit the display to a specified date range. You can also change the Refresh interval. 26 Using the Velocity Web Console

33 MAN Exception Log Select this link to display a page that enables you to view a log of the unhandled exceptions. You can filter this log to limit the display to a specified date range. You can also change the Refresh interval. Transaction Log Select this link to display a page that enables you to view a log of the access transactions. 34 HIRSCH Velocity Web Console Guide Active Alarms Select this link to display a page that enables you to view a log of the active alarms (which have not been acknowledged). This page enables you to: view any existing operator notes for a specific active alarm or add a new note, acknowledge one or all of the active alarms, and remove one or all of the active alarms from the display. 35 MAN Acknowledged Alarms Select this link to display a page that enables you to view a log of the acknowledged alarms. This page enables you to: view any existing operator notes for a specific acknowledged alarm or add a new note, clear one or all of the acknowledged alarms, and Using the Velocity Web Console 29

Velocity XML Transactions Log Select this link to display a page that enables you to view a log of the XML Transaction messages sent by the VWC. 37 MAN Archive Log Select this link to display a page that enables you to view a log of the archive activity performed in the VWC. You can filter this log to limit the display to a specified date range. You can also change the Refresh interval. 38 HIRSCH Velocity Web Console Guide Device Control When you click the Device Control link, a page like this appears: The drop-down list enables you to switch the structure of the system tree between Show Devices by Server or Show Devices by Type, which can be useful when you have multiple Velocity servers. The VWC currently supports only one Velocity server. 32 Using the Velocity Web Console

39 MAN By expanding the components in the left pane, a detailed system tree appears, showing the devices which are visible to you. You can click to select any of these components, and a description of that component appears in the right pane. Simply hover your cursor over the Functions link, and the available functions appear like in these examples: Using the Velocity Web Console 33

After you click on a function, a status message is displayed (in colored text) near the top of the page.
