Embargoed until Nov 30 th 2012 Biotec claim the British Chamber s Achievement in International Business Award A global pharmaceutical specialist that has seen sales increase by 517% in five years has been awarded the Achievement in International Business title at the British Chambers of Commerce Chamber Awards. Biotec Services International, which employs 52 people at its Bridgend facility in South Wales, beat off competition from hundreds of companies to win the prestigious title, sponsored by DHL Express. The company impressed judges with the way it has taken its expertise in temperature controlled pharmaceutical services across the world, with its client base ranging from virtual companies to small, medium and large pharma groups with outsourcing requirements. Its expertise in supporting clinical trials from the early stages through to the commercial supply of a product has proven especially popular overseas, with 95% of sales linked to international trade in countries such as the United States and Israel. Over 500 guests were on hand at the Guildhall in London to witness the culmination of the competition, which is the flagship event in the Chamber s Business is Good for Britain campaign. Joining Biotec Services International on the podium were eight other organisations, including an eco-friendly hair salon, an entrepreneurial funeral director and an international wholesale exporter. The winners were: Austin s Funeral Services Claire Austin (Entrepreneur of the Year)

Elan Hair Design (Sustainability) Freshney Place Shopping Centre (Marketing Campaign of the Year) Prism Total IT Solutions (Excellence in Customer Service) Ramsden International (Business of the Year and Outstanding Business Achievement) Simply Bows and Chair Covers (Most Promising New Business) Thomsons Online Benefits (Excellence in Innovation) The Trafford Centre (Commitment to People Development) President of the British Chambers of Commerce Martyn Pellew said: At the start of this year we asked businesses to show us why they are good for Britain and I m delighted with how they have responded. We had a record number of entries from all over the UK, with some excellent tales of innovation, job creation, growth and export success. He continued: Biotech Services International is a fitting winner of the Achievement in International Business Award and shows what can be achieved with a committed management team and a strong vision. Shannon Diett, Vice President of Marketing, DHL Express UK said: Britain is a hotbed of innovation and entrepreneurship, and it s absolutely right that the best of these businesses are seeking opportunities to take their proposition into new markets and grow their customers base. It s businesses like Biotec Services that can once again make Britain a country of products and services that the rest of the world value and invest in. Now in its 9 th year, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) Chamber Awards 2012 are supported by the RBS Group, DHL Express, BT Business, Dell, Westfield Health, Club Wembley 0and Acua Limited. The BCC sits at the heart of a powerful nationwide network of Accredited Chambers of Commerce, serving over 100,000 businesses across the UK, which employ over five million people. For more information visit: www.britishchambers.org.uk Winner biogs Claire Austin, Austin s Funeral Service (Entrepreneur of the Year) Austin s Funeral Directors arranges 1200 funerals across its eight branches every year and also operates Harwood Park Crematorium in Stevenage. Under Claire s leadership, the business has grown turnover 98% over the last decade and has ambitious growth plans to relocate all of its sites to locations with open and elegant frontages. She has focused on offering a level of service that sets the independent firm apart from its national competitors and has used feedback and a mystery shopper review to introduce a number of innovations for the sector. These include the free Little Green Book, 24/7 availability and the development of a bespoke pre-paid funeral plan. Biotec Services International (Achievement in International Business) Biotec Services International is recognised as a global leader in temperature controlled pharmaceutical services, with its client base ranging from virtual companies to small, medium and large pharma groups with outsourcing requirements. Located from its facility in Bridgend, it provides QP and GMP consultancy, clinical supplies, GMP temperature controlled storage, global logistics and advanced therapeutic medicinal products. Since 2007, Biotec s turnover has grown by 517%, with 95% of its current sales linked to international trade, including major expansion in Israel and the US. Elan Hair Design (Sustainability Award) Elan Hair Design has invested 250,000 into transforming its Inverurie premises into what is believed to be the UK s most ecofriendly hair salon. The commitment has seen it implement a number of measures to save energy, reduce waste and increase the feel good factor of using hairdressing and beauty treatments that leave a positive effect on the environment. This has seen the business purchase carbon-zero furniture, install PV panels to generate electricity, adopt LED lighting to reduce electricity usage and use basins that cut water consumption by 64%. Going green has been a wise decision, with Elan Hair Design reporting a 20% increase in turnover and the possibility of more new jobs to add to its existing 14- strong workforce. Freshney Place Shopping Centre (Marketing Campaign of the Year) Located in the heart of Grimsby, the thriving shopping centre boasts over 100 shops and attracts more than 13 million consumers ever year. Freshney Place successfully launched Dress for Success, an innovative six-week initiative that invited women to spring clean their wardrobes by swapping their unwanted workwear in return for a 10% off voucher to spend at leading retailers in the centre. Over 800 people took part and all the clothes received were donated to local charity Women s Aid.

The campaign helped contribute to a 3.35% increase in footfall at a time when national retail figures were down. Prism Total IT Solutions (Excellence in Customer Service) - Employing 24 people at its Congleton office, the company has been transforming the way the IT sector operates, providing expert support, consultancy, advice and guidance to SMEs. It thrives on becoming a strategic technology partner and has secured a number of new clients through its unique subscription model, which removes the need for any contractual obligations for the client. Customer service is also at the heart of Prism s philosophy and twelve months ago it put in place a new strategy that focused on enhancing relationships, improving telephone skills, creating clearer career development paths and developing a coaching and mentoring scheme with all managers. The results speak for themselves, with the firm recording 33% growth through the recession and a client survey revealing 96% customer retention and 94% satisfaction. Simply Bows and Chair Covers (Most Promising New Business) The company was established in 2008 by Sarah Pittendrigh after she was made bankrupt when the national events company she worked for suffered the effects of the economic downturn. Whilst helping to organise her brother s wedding, she found a gap in the market for stylish, high-quality chair covers and linen and launched her business in 2008 across the North East. Since then, Simply Bows and Chair Covers has grown rapidly and Sarah opted to launch the franchise operation in 2010. Just two years on, the business has 11 franchises from Aberdeen down to Berkshire and is on target to open 30 franchises by 2015. Plans are also being made to take the company into Europe and beyond after receiving enquiries from countries such as France, Spain and the UAE. Thomsons Online Benefits (Excellence in Innovation) When Michael Whitfield and Chris Bruce invested 25,000 in launching Thomsons Online Benefits, they shared a vision to revolutionise the benefits industry by moving manual and paperbased processes online. It was an audacious aim, but one that has paid off. The business now helps organisations, such as Apple, Deutsche Bank and JustGiving, to design, administer and manage the very best schemes for their employees. Innovation has always been at the forefront of the duo s thinking and its latest advancement Darwin has captured a number of sector firsts. Boosted by this thinking, 280 people are now working across Thomsons offices in London, Romania and Singapore and turnover is set to peak at 34m by the end of 2012. The Trafford Centre (Commitment to People Development) The Trafford Centre is the UK s largest shopping, dining and leisure destination, with more than 200 stores and 60 restaurants, cafes and bars.

It has developed and rolled-out The Trafford Centre Way, a world class training programme to improve employee development and customer service across all of its staff and managers. This has resulted in a host of benefits, with a 17% reduction in the number of complaints last year, 90% customer satisfaction and accreditation to the Investors in People Gold Award.
