HCA East Florida is playing a leading role in fundamentally transforming the way healthcare is provided. Our patient-centered, evidence-based best practices approach involves the patient and their families in healthcare decisions. The HCA East Florida Division is extremely proud of their achievements in 2012. We launched the South Florida Valve Institute program at several facilities, including the capability to perform the TAVR procedure at JFK, making HCA East Florida a leader in groundbreaking cardiac care. We are also extremely proud of our two trauma programs at Kendall and Lawnwood that together have treated over 3,500 critically injured patients. Many of our hospitals were named one of the nation s top performers on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of healthcare organizations in America. Only 14% of the nation s hospitals received this honor. In 2012, we launched CARE ASSURE our newest commitment to excellence in follow-up care, which takes a broader view of patient care and helps them transition from an acute care setting back to daily life with appropriate diagnosis, treatment and continued communication. Social media has become an important method of conversation for our communities, as well. All of our 14 hospitals can be accessed through Facebook and Twitter and we have a video library available on YouTube. It puts critical information at their fingertips, both on their office computers and via smartphone technology. Horizon Patient Folder (HPF) is HCA s Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system. The system replaces paper charts at our hospitals. Whether through digital interfaces or scanning of documents, every piece of pertinent patient documentation is electronically stored in HPF. This makes viewing the information much more efficient for our clinicians, improving their ability to respond to results quickly. An additional benefit is the ability to deliver patients their documents more efficiently should a request for records occur. hcare Access This service provides physicians and their staff with a faster and more convenient remote login solution. Whether using PC, Mac or ipad, physicians have access to the same clinical applications they use at the hospital from virtually anywhere. Connection time is 75 percent faster than prior remote access solutions and single sign-on password management is available. This system allows for the digital storage and electronic reading of echocardiograms performed on our patients. Physicians are able to use state-ofthe-art systems to create a structured report and electronically sign it within minutes of the exam being performed. Coupled with our GE PACS system, DMS allows physicians to also view historical exams and interpretations to assist with follow-up care. This system creates a much more efficient process that increases patient safety and physician satisfaction. Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) CPOE is patient safety technology that allows providers to place orders directly into the clinical information system and check each order against the patient s medical information. Providers are alerted to any potential contraindications or interactions at the time of order. This streamlines the process and eliminates opportunities for medical error. In addition to the safety checks, orders go immediately to the department(s) that will implement/initiate the order, leading to more efficient patient care. This system is used hospitalwide and in all of our emergency departments. Leveraging technology developed by Cisco and our East Florida Division s network connectivity, clinicians are able to provide care to our patients remotely. With implementations focused on neurology, psychiatric care, and burn-patient care, East Florida is leveraging this state-of-the-art technology to give physicians the ability to perform visual assessments of their patients from hundreds of miles away. Voice Recognition System This technology allows physicians to report their clinical findings directly on a system that recognizes their voice. It creates efficiency in our radiology departments by eliminating the delays often caused by transcriptions. The report then gets reviewed on screen by the radiologist where it can be corrected, signed and sent for utilization by other clinicians within a 30-minute time frame. Emergency Department Management Module (EDM) EDM is used to manage the flow of patients through the emergency department from arrival through departure. Both CPOE and emar fully integrate into EDM, allowing for streamlined communication of orders and medication administration between physicians and emergency department staff. EDM is also used to measure and track emergency room wait times quickly and accurately. In 2012, JFK opened the first off-site ER in Palm Beach County, in the Palm Beach Gardens area, quickly followed by the opening of a second location in Western Boynton Beach in early 2013. The facilities provide the surrounding communities with 24-hour access to experienced, board-certified emergency room physicians, stateof-the-art imaging and diagnostic equipment, and a fully equipped laboratory and offers a full range of emergency services for children and adults. Emergency Department For the past few years, HCA East Florida has been working diligently to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of its emergency rooms. Our focus on enhancing care and improving emergency processes has dramatically reduced wait times to below national averages. We have been so successful that average emergency room wait times are now available to the public. This vital information provides patients with the resources to make informed decisions about their urgent medical needs. Wait times for all of our hospitals are updated every 30 minutes and are available by texting ER to 23000, iphone app on our website, iphone itriage app from the App Store and roadside digital billboards throughout the region. When looking to itriage for healthcare answers, a potential patient can utilize inotify to convey that they are coming into the ER for treatment. Through the online system, inotify securely alerts the ER triage team of the pending visit and related illness or injury, which streamlines the care coordination. TIC DOC Find a doctor in 30 seconds or less HCA prides itself on combining technology with community outreach to provide important healthcare information to consumers on the go. TIC-DOC aids consumers in finding HCA doctors and specialists in their community seamlessly, within seconds via their mobile phone. HCA Hope Fund The Hope Fund helps our HCA colleagues who may be facing any number of difficult situations. The HCA Hope Fund is an employee-run, employee-supported 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The Fund s goal is to be an effective, reliable and permanent way for HCA employees to help one another, providing hope and financial assistance in times of need. Specialized Care Emergency Department Excellence Our strong focus on enhancing care and improving ER processes has dramatically reduced wait times to below national averages. In fact, we re so successful, average ER wait times are available to the public. Using various innovative methods, local residents have immediate access to average ER wait times. Patients have easy access to an estimate of how long they will have to wait to receive care in the ER, thereby providing them with the resources to make informed medical decisions about their urgent needs when seconds count. Since the ER wait times campaign was so successful with the communities we serve, we are now offering ER wait times for our hospitals with pediatrics. They are part of the University of South Florida/HCA Trauma Network, joining forces with one of the state s top medical schools which allows HCA to reach its goals for research, quality, safety and better outcomes for its patients. The joint initiative will enable HCA hospitals to meet local needs for trauma services through an affiliation with a major academic university and medical school. All Florida residents will benefit from centralized statewide data collection for trauma research and coordination of services not readily accessible in underserved areas of the state. Advanced Surgical Our network offers some of the most efficient and well-equipped operating rooms in the region. One of the most exciting technologies we offer today is the da Vinci Robotic Surgery System. The use of robotics takes minimally invasive techniques into a new era, further minimizing the physical and emotional impact of surgery on patients. Robotically assisted minimally invasive surgery (MIS) allows physicians to perform many kinds of major surgeries such as hysterectomies, prostatectomies and heart surgeries. Surgeries are performed through small incisions, which replace the large incisions needed for conventional open surgeries, allowing patients to experience less trauma and pain, minimal scarring, faster recovery and shorter hospital stays. Robotic technology takes surgery beyond the limits of the human hand, introducing precise, versatile instrument movement combined with three-dimensional visualization of the operation. Our surgeons perform many types of robotic procedures including thoracic and gynecological surgery as well as robotic bariatric surgery. Robotic surgery is currently available at these HCA East Florida affiliates: Aventura Hospital &, JFK, Kendall Regional, Mercy Hospital, Northwest, Palms West Hospital, Plantation General Hospital, St. Lucie and Westside Regional. Neurosciences & Stroke Care Our hospitals offer the highest level of neuroscience and stroke care. Most of our hospitals have earned the Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center Certification, which is the gold standard for ensuring the highest level of care. In addition to this, several of our facilities have earned accreditation as Comprehensive Stroke Centers. This designation enables us to provide the most cutting-edge stroke care. The stroke center includes state-of-the-art technology and a neurointerventional radiologist. Created by the Brain Attack Coalition, the Comprehensive Stroke Center recommendations enhance and expand the Primary Stroke Center guidelines and have more stringent requirements. Orthopedic & Spine Surgery Patients needing advanced treatments for orthopedic and spine issues can find high-quality care at our HCA East Florida hospitals. Women & Children s There were 10,082 babies born at our East Florida hospitals last year. Six of our hospitals offer obstetrical services to their communities along with Levels I, II and II Neonatal Intensive Care Units. Plantation General Hospital is the only hospital in Florida to receive The Joint Commission s Gold Seal of Approval for its Prematurity program. Our commitment to women s services, from childbirth to the latest in digital mammography to innovative surgical options for hysterectomies and other women s procedures using robotics, is unsurpassed. Our Breast Care Centers are dedicated to treating women in a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere with a team standing ready to assist in the need of further diagnostics and treatment such as breast MRI, digital mammography and stereotactic breast biopsy. HCA s labor and delivery physicians are now using cutting-edge technology to keep a closer eye on mothers and babies than ever before. This innovative monitoring system is called AirStrip OB. Physicians are able to monitor the current vital signs of both mother and baby from virtually anywhere, at any time, using only a smartphone such as an iphone or BlackBerry. The information the physician sees is the same data that appears on the monitoring system at the hospital including contraction patterns, baby s heart rate, and the nurse s notes, among other data. Pediatric While all our facilities are kid friendly, HCA hospitals are pleased to offer pediatric inpatient care at Kendall Regional, Northwest, Plantation General Hospital and Palms West Hospital. The pediatricians and pediatric specialists on staff expertly treat most conditions. With many years of experience in caring for little ones, we know how to make kids feel safe, comfortable, and most of all, better. Heart & Vascular Network Experience and uncompromising patient care are built into the services at HCA East Florida s cardiac hospitals. We offer the area s most advanced, non-invasive diagnostic tests for accurately assessing your heart condition. These procedures available to both inpatients and outpatients include electrocardiography, Holter monitoring, echocardiography and stress tests. Our medical professionals can detect even the smallest heart irregularity using a full range of comprehensive diagnostic tests and interventional procedures performed with leading-edge technology. Diagnostics are often followed immediately by advanced treatments such as cardiac cath, angioplasty, and stent implantation. Our focus on outcomes assures that we are delivering quality cardiac care to all of our patients. Until now, patients with severe aortic stenosis have had to give up much of what makes life enjoyable. But with a new procedure called transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) offered by the South Florida Valve Institute, they won t have to give up hope. TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a catheter to replace the aortic valve without the need of open-heart surgery. Patients treated with TAVR enjoy a wide range of benefits, including decreased risk of mortality, prompt recovery, and less trauma to the heart. The South Florida Valve Institute will evaluate each patient for eligibility and work in tandem with the team at Aventura Hospital and to identify candidates for this procedure. Never before have facilities worked together to provide the community with lifesaving access to a new procedure. A team of cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons brings its extensive range of skills to bear on a wide range of open-heart procedures for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. These include coronary artery bypass surgery, valve replacement and repair, aortic dissection repair and a growing number of minimally invasive surgical procedures including robotic heart surgery. We also offer advanced treatment for the cure of atrial fibrillation through our advanced electrophysiology team of physicians. Imaging, Ambulatory Surgery Centers & IRL The HCA East Florida network of affiliated hospitals provides the most comprehensive array of outpatient imaging and outpatient surgery centers. Part of the HCA family of services includes Florida Open Imaging Centers (FOIC) which owns and operates full-service outpatient imaging facilities conveniently located throughout Palm Beach County. Our centers feature a warm, friendly atmosphere that allows for a very pleasant experience. A key component in our success is the team effort of our highly trained and dedicated radiologists and technologists. Our radiologists are present each and every day for the safety of our patients and the quality of their care. Cutting-edge technology allows us to direct specific cases to an appropriate subspecialty radiologist, or to another facility or hospital. This ensures that each patient receives a high-quality scan with an accurate result. All procedures are performed with state-of-the-art imaging equipment and every exam is interpreted by a board-certified radiologist. Results are forwarded to the ordering physician by fax and/or mail, and we always accommodate STAT examinations. We are also committed to bringing the most sophisticated tools used today in the war against cancer. They include intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), a world-class treatment that allows for precise radiation of tumor cells at higher doses without harming surrounding healthy tissue. IMRT has proven effective in the management of tumors previously deemed untreatable. The CyberKnife System, the world s first robotic radiosurgery system, is available at JFK and Mercy Hospital. It is designed to treat tumors anywhere in the body in one to five days, versus several weeks for traditional methods. Treatment is accomplished on an outpatient basis, with no incisions, no pain and no anesthesia.
