Welcome to Henley College Coventry Henley College Coventry is a vibrant and friendly college of Further Education in Coventry that has been welcoming students from all over the world to study and be part of the Henley College Coventry community for over 20 years. Student First Looking after you As soon as you apply to be a student at Henley College Coventry, you become part of a caring community where your welfare and happiness is our first concern. Our friendly staff will make sure that you always have somebody to turn to for help and advice. Accommodation We know that as a student coming from abroad, your first concern is usually where you are going to live. At Henley College Coventry, we offer a Homestay scheme, where we will arrange for you to stay with a host. The individual host or family is carefully selected by our own full-time Accommodation Officer. Many of them have hosted students over many years and they will provide you with your own room plus breakfast and an evening meal during the week (and all meals at the weekend). We believe this provides an ideal opportunity for you to experience British culture and practise your language skills. After you have settled into Coventry and college life, if you prefer to move to your own flat or house share with other students then our Accommodation Officer will be happy to advise you. Personal Care On arrival you will be assigned a personal tutor who will advise you and look after your academic and personal needs. Medical Health We hope that you will never require medical attention but if you do, we have our own qualified first aiders to help you. We will also make the arrangements to enable you to see a local doctor if necessary. Careers advice Our Careers Advice Service will ensure that whether you choose to stay and continue with your studies or return home, it will be a carefully considered decision. English Language Programme The Henley College English Language Programme is designed to provide a course to suit you at any level from Elementary to Advanced. We will help you learn the English you need: For personal and social purposes To pass internationally recognised examinations such as Cambridge First Certificate and IELTS To prepare for higher education in the UK or another English-speaking country To learn new skills for your future career General English programme Our English language classes are open all through the year. Core studies (10 hours per week) In this class you will follow a general language improvement course based on a published course book. Your teacher for this lesson is also your personal course tutor and he/she will follow your progress very carefully. You will have regular tutorials when you will discuss your progress and any special needs. Language activities (5 hours per week) In this class you will concentrate on different language activities to support the Core course. This will include vocabulary expansion, pronunciation, grammar, writing and communication skills. The General English courses are full-time, 19 hours per week. To ensure you are on the right course you will be asked to take a test before we place you in a class at an appropriate level. The maximum number of students in your class will normally be 16. Integrated skills (4 hours per week) You will spend two lessons per week improving your skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. You will do this by examining a theme of general interest, such as Jobs and Employment, Newspapers and the Media and others. You will also learn practical skills, such as preparing a C.V., writing business letters, preparing for an interview and making presentations. Alternatively you may join an IELTS preparation class. Self Study Our College Library and Computer Centre are open for private study after class each day. English Plus While you are studying at the College, you may combine your English classes with lessons in one of the other academic or vocational subjects we teach. You can choose to exchange between 2 and 4 hours of English for the same number of hours in another subject. You will join a class with our British and other international students and you can choose from subjects including: Art and Design Business Studies Computing Hospitality Media Photography Sports Studies Tourism The subject classes are usually from September to April. You will normally need at least an Intermediate level of English to participate in the English Plus programme. Examinations All students are encouraged to enter for an appropriate examination and your tutor will help you prepare for most of the major English language examinations: Cambridge IELTS Cambridge Preliminary English Test (PET) Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) Even if you do not take an examination, you will receive a Henley College Coventry certificate at the end of your course stating the duration of your course and the level of English studied. www.henley-cov.ac.uk
International Foundation Programme Henley College Coventry has been providing successful Foundation courses to international students since 1984 and has an excellent record of placing students on degree and other higher education courses. The International Foundation course offers: Established progression routes to a range of British universities when you successfully complete the course An effective and economical route to university study with two entry points from September to July or a fast-track option from January to July. Entry Requirements You will need a high school leaving certificate with good grades in English and Maths. For the September entry, you will need a level of English equivalent to IELTS 4.5 (5.0 for Law). For the January fast-track, you will need to achieve IELTS 5.5 (6.0 for Law) or an acceptable equivalent. You should be at least 16 years old when you join the September Programme or 16 years and 4 months old for the January start. Course Content In addition to specialist subjects, you will follow modules in subjects such as English and Study Skills and Information Technology. In English and Study Skills, for example, you will learn research techniques, how to write and present an academic report or essay and how to listen to and learn from lectures effectively. We will help you to make your reading more effective and efficient and we will teach you to make presentations and to participate in seminars. In addition, you will develop your academic vocabulary and receive lessons in how to improve your IELTS score. All of these skills will prepare you for success at university. You will also have tutorials each week when you can discuss your progress with your personal tutor and get advice on university applications. How will I study? Your course will typically consist of 19 hours per week of classroom study if you join us in September or 26 hours per week if you join us in January. During the course you will work independently to complete assignments. These assignments may be essays, reports or presentations to your classmates. How will I be assessed? In addition to your assignments you will have final examinations in June. The grades for your assignments will contribute to your final overall grade. In each module, you will need a mark of 40% to achieve a Pass, 50% for a Credit and 70% to gain a Distinction. College Facilities Learning Resources Centre (LRC) As a student here, you get automatic access to the LRC, which offers full library services including text books, fiction titles, e-books, magazines and newspapers. There are over 60 computers with free internet access. Therapeutix Therapeutix is Henley s own beauty salon where you are welcome to book in for pampering sessions at a discounted price during lesson breaks or in the evenings. Headstart Henley runs a modern hairdressing salon with services include washing, blow-drying, colouring, cuts, perms, plaiting and many more to cater to your individual style. Henley Courtyard Cafe The Courtyard Cafe serves a wide range of healthy meals at great prices all in very pleasant surroundings where you can relax with your friends between classes. Henley s Restaurant Henley has a Restaurant and Bistro which offer nutritious meals freshly prepared each day by Catering students. The bistro is open every day at lunchtime and has a salad bar and a variety of hot food, soups and desserts prepared to cater to different tastes. Henley Travel This is the College s own travel agency, staffed with a friendly team which can arrange transport and accommodation, finding the best deals to suit your requirements. Tickets can be booked to places all over the world. Henley Active Henley s sporting facilities include a fully equipped airconditioned gym, Henley Active.
