Instructor Bulletin CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Program Program Release Date: April 29, 2011 Executive Summary The American Red Cross is introducing the newly revised CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers program which is designed to train professional-level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. To supplement this program, the following courses and in-service training lessons have been updated: Administering Emergency Oxygen teaches the knowledge and skills to provide care to a victim of a breathing emergency using breathing devices, including resuscitation masks, bag-valve-mask resuscitators (BVMs) and emergency oxygen. Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission meets the intent of the Bloodborne Pathogens regulation issued by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) when combined with the site specific training requirement. The Asthma lesson gives individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide care to a person experiencing an asthma emergency with the use of an inhaler device until more advanced medical personnel take over. The Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto-Injectors lesson gives individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide care to a person experiencing anaphylaxis with the use of an epinephrine auto injector until more advanced emergency medical personnel take over. Features of the new program include: Two-year certification with free digital quarterly course refreshers Customer choice of materials download free digital or purchase affordable, competitively priced print materials Easy access to certificate printing and tracking Concise, interactive course Lower cost More value through comprehensive training materials In addition, the American Red Cross intends to develop other professional-level courses, such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and continuing education courses in the near future. Scientific Changes In October 2010, new CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care treatment recommendations were released. This process was led by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and was sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA). These recommendations and guidelines were reviewed by the Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council and incorporated into the new program. Summary of Planned Changes to CPR Skills in American Red Cross Programs Product Information Participant Materials A handbook is available for participants in e-book and print formats. It can be viewed on multiple platforms, including ipads. The handbook must be provided to participants for use during the course if they do not bring their own digital or print copy. Chapters should have printed products available at their classes for participants who wish to purchase this product. Note: Participants will be required to use both adult and pediatric resuscitation masks to demonstrate ventilations. Handbook Content and skill sheets are in separate chapters for ease of reference and review. Key skill steps are presented with full color photos and text. Great for quick reference and review. Certificate issued and validity period: CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers: 2 years INSTRUCTOR SUPPORT Instructor Trainers Existing Instructor Trainers o Obtain and retain the new Guide for Training CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Instructors. o Obtain and retain the new participant and instructor materials. o Complete the update online or participate in a group orientation. The online update is available on Instructors Corner. Go to the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers program page. Training is documented electronically through the American Red Cross Learning Center. o Complete Part VI (Update or Re-Training) of the Application/W orksheet for Instructor Trainers Attachment (for update and retraining) and return it to the home chapter New Instructor Trainer Candidates 4

o Instructor trainers are trained through the Preparedness Training System. An IT group practicum outline will be developed. Instructor Trainer Certification (new term) o There is one instructor trainer certification CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers. Lifeguarding and Emergency Medical Response instructor trainers will also be able to teach this program. They should complete the online update or participate in a group orientation. Instructor Trainer Re-Certification (new term) o CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers instructor trainers must teach or co- teach one CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers instructor course (including instructor bridge or crossover instructor course) every 2 years; AND o Pass an online recertification assessment on the American Red Cross Learning Center with a score of 80 percent or better within their certification period. Instructors Existing CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Instructors must: o Obtain and retain the new participant and instructor materials. o Complete the update online or participate in a group orientation. The online update is available on Instructors Corner. Go to the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers program page. Training is documented electronically through the American Red Cross Learning Center. New Instructors must: o Be at least 17 years of age (by the end of the course). o Complete an online orientation to the American Red Cross. o Successfully complete the online Orientation to the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Instructor Course o Successfully complete the precourse written exam. o Posses a current basic level American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers certificate (or equivalent) o Successfully complete the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Instructor course. Instructors from Other Training Agencies ( Quick Start ) must: o Provide evidence of current external credentials that show successful completion of a formal instructor course for professional rescuer, health care provider or basic life support CPR/AED from one of the following organizations: Canadian Red Cross American Heart Association National Safety Council Health and Safety Institute (HIS) (American Safety and Health Institute and Medic First Aid) Emergency Care and Safety Institute Medic First Aid o Participate in a Quick Start online training launched from the American Red Cross Learning Center. The training includes an online orientation to the American Red Cross. Professional educators and health care and medical professionals o The following candidates are eligible for the crossover/re-entry course: Individuals previously certified as an instructor in the program whose certification expired no more than 2 years before from the beginning of the instructor re-entry course. Registered nurses and student nurses who have completed one semester of clinical training. Certified and/or Licensed Athletic Trainers (ATC, LAT) Professional educators Public and community health education professionals (CHES, MPH) Others as determined by the local Red Cross Health and Safety Services administrator o Instructor candidates must: Be at least 17 years of age (by the end of the course). Posses a current basic level American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers certificate (or equivalent). 5

Complete an online orientation to the American Red Cross. Successfully complete the online Orientation to the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Instructor Course. Successfully complete the precourse written exam. Successfully complete the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Crossover/Re-entry Instructor course. American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED (r.11) Instructors (Bridging) must: O Be at least 17 years of age by the end of the course. O Posses a current CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers certificate (or equivalent). o Obtain and retain the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers participant and instructor materials. o Complete the online instructor update. o Successfully complete the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Instructor Course final written exam. Instructor Certification (new term) o There is one instructor certification CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers. Lifeguarding and Emergency Medical Response instructors are also eligible to teach this program. They should complete the online update or participate in a group orientation. Instructor Re-Certification (new term) o CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers instructors must teach or co-teach one CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers course (full, review or challenge) every 2 years; AND o Pass an online recertification assessment on the American Red Cross Learning Center with a score of 80 percent or better within their certification period. Lifeguarding and Emergency Medical Response instructors and instructor trainers will be eligible to teach this program after completing a self orientation to the program materials. CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers instructors and instructor trainers are eligible to teach Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission by completing the Bloodborne Pathogens Training Instructor Self-Study Bridge course (available online at the Red Cross Learning Center). CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers instructors and instructor trainers are eligible to teach Administering Emergency Oxygen by possessing a basic-level certification and by completing an orientation to the materials. Information on Additional Training in the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Program ADMINISTERING EMERGENCY OXYGEN Materials that can be used when teaching the Administering Emergency Oxygen course are available in the following programs: CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Lifeguarding Emergency Medical Response Administering Emergency Oxygen is also available in a blended-learning format (not updated). Basic-Level Course Information The American Red Cross Administering Emergency Oxygen course is designed to give participants the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to a victim of a breathing emergency using breathing devices, including resuscitation masks, bag-valve-mask resuscitators (BVMs) and emergency oxygen. 6

Prerequisite: Current American Red Cross Adult, Child or Infant CPR or equivalent Certificate issued and validity period: Administering Emergency Oxygen: 2 years (unless state or local regulations dictate otherwise) Course length: 1 hour, 40 minutes 1 hour, 5 minutes when taught with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Enrichment topic: Suctioning 15 minutes Enrichment topic: Airways 15 minutes Participant Materials The materials in the CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers program for this course Administering Emergency Oxygen Fact and Skill Sheets are available only in digital format. Basic-Level Course Information The American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission course is designed to teach employees how bloodborne pathogens are spread; how to help prevent exposure incidents by following work practice controls, using engineering controls and personal protective equipment, practicing 7

good personal hygiene and properly cleaning and disinfecting equipment and supplies; and how to recognize, report and follow up on employee exposures to infectious materials. Certificate issued and validity period: Bloodborne Pathogens Training: 1 year; in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations Participant Materials The materials for this course Bloodborne Pathogens Training Fact and Skill Sheets are available only in digital format.
