Carpooling in Bergen, Norway with an app called Carma By: Kristian Amlie, Carpool enthusiast 26th of March 2014 - MMØresund

In rush hour there are only 1,17 persons in each car Driving alone in the city should in the future be considered a bad habit! -Arild Eggen, NPRA

With «business as usual» politics the traffic in Bergen will increase by 40% before 2030

Everyday one million trips happens in Bergen

3% bicycles

10% carpools

12% uses public transport

19% walks

56% drives a car

The city of Bergen will benefit greatly with less cars on the roads *Less time lost in traffic jams *Less exhaust and pollution *Health benefits (we have a poison lid like Paris) *More efficient road use

January 2010 - working in a business park near the airport with an oil drilling contractor I had an episode in the traffic jam My wheels! - I could not stand it anymore!

In 2010 The NPRA had a plan to spend NOK 48 mill and have a solution by 2014

Smart use of technology we can fill the empty seats! *Smartphones with a GPS and Internet connection *Several avialable cell phone «apps» connects the driver and passengers: *Carma Carpooling *HentMEG * possibly others *NPRA develops an R&D solution to connect carpool apps, taxi and public transport *12 corporations are joining in and recruits their employees *People trust each other in Norway Bergen is a pioneering city for carpooling!

*Wait four years for the NPRA? I think not!

Several companies were interested and informed about the opportunities

Bergen is blessed with Norway s longest HOV lane called «2+»

Results with carpooling in Sandsli business area in 2013 *Over 1300 registered users * 350 people have used the app for transport *Over 5000 trips completed *A distance of over 60.000 km traveled using carpooling

How did we get from <10 users to 1300? Background: Introducing carpooling will meet many counter forces Feelings: - Pride - Sense of freedom - Status symbol - Security Practical issues and mental issues: - Already have one or two cars - Not enough passengers - No vocabulary for carpooling - No examples to follow - Society is centered around the car

Project managers ground rules for start-up period 1. Celebrate even the smallest victories 1. (high fives and champagne ++) 2. Do not get discouraged by set-backs 1. - There will be many 3. Always set long term and short term goals and communicate them richly (pictures and videos) 4. Pioneers needs to be nurtured and appreciated 5. One negative user outweights ten positive - follow up bugs, user problems, no matches 6. Plan and re-plan every 14th day the short term 7. goals and copy successes from groups to other group 8. Use your carpool system provider and their 9. experiences from other locations

Carpool communities recipe for scaling up beyond Project Managers reach Ambassadors in communities Supporters App provider Local on-site Project Manager

Statistics and reporting is important

Level of maturity: 1) Understands what car pooling can contribute with in society 2) Knows about apps that offers rides 3) I registered with Carma as a user and with preferences 4) Has performed the first test drive 5) Has performed the first real drive with an real driver or passenger

Conclusion from Bergen program: Yes! It is possible to establish a carpool Needs careful planning and follow up Just presenting an offer of carpooling is not enough Doing is beliving!
