ARRAS AUTOMATED RAPID REEF ASSESSMENT SYSTEM 2
AUTOMATED RAPID REEF ASSESSMENT SYSTEM - ARRAS Funded by Department of Science and Technology Duration 3 years (1 June 2010-31 May 2013) Program Partners: University of the Philippines Mapua Institute of Technology De La Salle University 3
Program Objectives Year 1 Develop Rapid Reef Assessment Tools Year 2 Deploy Tools to Stakeholders Year 3 Apply ALL ARRAS Tools on a Location of National Significance Verde Island Passage 4
Issues with Reef Assessment Provincial fieldwork is costly. Repeated surveys are necessary Rapid assessment is needed in case of catastrophies Ship grounding on reef Oil spills, etc.
Our Solution: Citizen Science teach coastal communities/stakeholders how to use ARRAS tools. Let them do the local survey. Tools must be low-cost Can be mass produced Easy to use Even non-scientists will not be afraid to use them Easy to construct End users can make their own or repair their existing kit.
Republic of the Philippines Archipelago 7100 +/-1 islands 92M people 5 th longest coastline in the world 60% live in coastal communities 7
