Research Experience: University of Florida 2011-present: Graduate student. Studying the influence of external drivers on the stability and reactivity of organic matter in wetland ecosystems. Compiling literature review on advanced techniques to characterize wetland soil organic matter including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Mass Spectroscopy (MS), and X-Ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES). Supervisors: Dr. K. Ramesh Reddy Louisiana State University 2011: Undergraduate researcher. Contributed to research of Wax Lake Delta, LA focusing on the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients and the fate of nitrate (i.e., denitrification, assimilation, reduction to ammonium, burial) introduced via Mississippi River on primary successional coastal marshes. Conducted soil C, N, and P analysis, determined bulk density and organic matter content, performed soil KCL extractions to determine exchangeable NO 3 and NH 4 fractions, and managed research databases. Assisted field work for Everglades LTER mangrove research. Supervisors: Dr. Robert R. Twilley and Dr. Edward Castañeda. Louisiana State University 2008-2010: Undergraduate researcher. Analyzed the ability of wetland soils to sorb pharmaceutical pollutants. The relationship was investigated with sorption kinetics and Freundlich isotherms using HPLC. Researched the molecular structure of organic soils and the processes that form natural organic matter. Developed methods to construct model soils by sorbing humic acids to silica beads with functional groups C 18, C 8, C Phenyl, and C Aminopropyl and characterized these samples via 13 C NMR, FTIR, EEM, and UV-Vis. Supervisor: Dr. Robert Cook. University of Minnesota and Louisiana State University Summer 2010: National Center for Earth-Surface Dynamics (NCED) REU. Investigated changes in soil and pore water biogeochemistry as a function of river inflow on headland peat marshes of Wax Lake Delta (WLD). Work included fieldwork, processing soil and porewater samples, and instrumental analysis. Supervisors: Dr. Robert R. Twilley and Dr. Edward Castañeda. The Pennsylvania State University Summer 2009: Center for Environmental Kinetics Analysis REU. Synthesized a range of Al/Si gel compositions and analyzed their reactivity using 19 F, 29 Si and 27 Al NMR spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption inverse gas chromatography (TPD-IGC) Supervisor: Dr. Karl Mueller. Louisiana State University Summer 2008: Office of Strategic Initiatives LSU REU. Explored the effect of hydration, organic matter content, and pollutant polarity on the sorption of pesticides to soils. The relationship was investigated with sorption kinetics and Freundlich isotherms using HPLC. Supervisor: Dr. Robert Cook.
