How many people in the U.S. barbecue? 72 percent of U.S. households have a grill; that means more than 200 million people can enjoy outdoor cooking 2. How often do they cook outdoors? The typical barbecuing household cooks outdoors more than 20 times during the season (mid-may through mid-september). 56 percent of all grills owners cook out year-round; 62 percent of gas grill owners. 92 percent of all barbecuing is done at home 3. How many grills are currently in use? The average barbecuer owns 1.6 grills; with more than 70 million U.S. barbecuing households that means approximately 115 million grills in use. 61 percent of grill owners have 1 grill, 26 percent have 2 and 13 percent have 3 or more. 91 percent of grill owners used their grill in the past year 4. How many grills are sold each year? Just over 14 million grills were shipped in 2003, an off year due to 17 consecutive weekends of spring/summer rain in populous areas of the U.S. 2004 shipments are projected to be well over 15 million

The average gas grill in use is 4.1 years old, charcoal 4.8 and electric 3.7 6. What does the average grill cost? 83 percent of gas grills sold and 97 percent of charcoal cost less than $300. The average gas grills sells for $219, charcoal for $79 and electric $120. However, today there are versatile stainless steel grills that sell for up to $10,000 7. Where are grills most often purchased? More charcoal grills are purchased at discount stores, more gas grills at both discount stores and home improvement centers and more electric and gas at department stores 8. What are the most popular barbecue occasions? 70 percent of U.S. barbecuing households cook out on July 4 th, 62 percent on memorial Day and 55 percent on Labor Day 9. Who does the barbecuing in the typical household? Typically, two thirds of households normally have the male head of household light the grill and cook, particularly when entertaining family or friends

Does the typical gas grill owner use an LP cylinder exchange or go to a refill location? 98 percent of gas grills use LP/propane fuel; 74 percent of the grills came with the LP cylinder. 54 percent of gas grill owners have 2 or more cylinders to avoid running out of propane. 68 percent of them refill the empty for reuse; 32 percent exchange for a new/full cylinder, The latter share is growing steadily 11. Does the typical charcoal grill owner use instant light or regular briquets? What is the most popular type of charcoal used? 65 percent of charcoal grill owners normally use regular charcoal briquets, 24 percent often use the instant light variety. Far fewer grill owners use wood, flavored charcoal briquets, light-the-bag briquets or natural lump charcoal, although the use of lump charcoal is increasingly rapidly 12. What are the most popular tools, utensils and accessories? Long-handled tongs, forks, spatulas and brushes, grill cleaning brushes, gloves/mitts and a grill cover are the most essential and typically bought at time of grill purchase 13. How many outdoor cooks use barbecue sauce? About half of charcoal grill owners are frequent users of barbecue sauce, slightly fewer gas grill owners use it. Barbecue sauce is used in one of three ways: as a condiment, brushed on during cooking or as a marinade

Page 4 14. How many grill owners take one along for use away from home? 17 percent cook at campgrounds or when camping, 11 percent at second/vacation homes and 7 percent at parks 15. What are the most popular foods cooked outdoors? Burgers, steak, hot dogs, chicken parts, sausage and ribs top the list although the list grows exponentially as outdoor chefs grow more adventuresome and sophisticated in their grilling or smoking activity 16. Outdoor Rooms are a recent phenomenon. Just how popular have they become? A recent industry survey of gas grill owners with household incomes of $75K plus showed approximately half already have an outdoor room, whatever they may call it. A basic outdoor room on an existing patio including a quality grill, dining furniture, lighting and umbrellas can be had for about $2,500. Of course, if budget is not an object it can easily escalate to $50,000 with an in-ground pool, island grill and high end landscaping. The important things to bear in mind are that a phased-plan over several years may be the best approach, and an affordable outdoor room is within the reach of most homeowners 17. What about flavored wood chips, chunks and pellets? These natural wood products have become more popular in the past several years; outdoor chefs have come to love the special flavor they impart to a range of foods. 58 percent of charcoal/wood grill owners have yet to try them. Hickory and mesquite are by far the most popular by more than 3-to-1 over the next flavors (apple, oak, cherry). 73 percent of gas grill owners have yet to use chips,

There are grills that burn pellets as a main source of fuel while wood chunks have also become a popular primary cooking fuel 18. How many turkey fryers/fish cookers are in use nationwide? The Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Assn. (HPBA) estimates that between 8 and 10 million propane-fired fryers are currently in use.
