Following Arnold Peter Møller s death in 1965, his son, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, assumed leadership of the Group, and the Group is now managed by Group CEO and Partner Nils Smedegaard Andersen. Maersk Line is a leading player on the global market for container transport. The vision of Maersk Line is to create opportunities in global commerce. www.maerskline.com www.maersk.com A long relationship with Russia Mr. Arnold Peter Møller in St. Petersburg Coming from a position with a ship broker firm in Königsberg (Kaliningrad), Mr. A.P. Møller joined the chartering department of the large shipbrokers, H.J. Pallisen in June 1899. The enterprise included two steamship companies as well, and after a year, Mr. A.P. Møller took over management of those companies' bookkeeping and finance department. Soon after, Mr. A.P. Møller was given the responsibility of the shipowning department, which managed the fleets of both steamship companies. Having concluded his contract with the company in 1903, he returned to Denmark to fulfill another ambition which resulted in the establishment of Dampskibsselskabet Svendborg (The Steamship Company Svendborg) in 1904 - today's A.P. Møller - Mærsk A/S. The first call by a Maersk vessel to Russia was the earliest possible: The Steamship Company Svendborg had its first vessel - named SVENDBORG - delivered on 6 October 1904, and its first voyage with coal from Newport, Wales, went to Krohnstadt, just outside St. Petersburg, where it arrived on 20 October 1904.
What is container shipping? Containerisation is a global system of intermodal cargo transport using standardised containers, which can be loaded and sealed intact onto container ships, railroad cars, planes and trucks. Prior to the introduction of containers, cargo handling for sea transportation was both time consuming and expensive. Containers have changed that fundamentally. Transport is now safer and more affordable than ever before. World trade would not be the same without the modern container, invented in 1956. Today, it carries most goods in world trade. Every commodity and type of goods can be loaded and carried in the box, as the container is often referred to. As a result, modern container shipping has changed the way we transport goods around the world and has played a key role in globalisation. www.worldshipping.org/about-the-industry Funny Facts A single 20-foot container can hold about 48,000 bananas. So, in theory, a PSvessel such as the EMMA MAERSK can transport approximately 528 million bananas in a single voyage - enough to give every person in Europe or North America a banana for breakfast. If all Maersk Line containers were placed one after the other, they would reach about 19,000 km. This is more than the distance from Copenhagen, Denmark to Perth, Australia, via Cape Town, South Africa or almost half of the earth's circumference or almost three times the earth's radius. If all the Maersk Line containers were stacked on top of each other they would reach approximately 2,500 kilometres high, equivalent to stacking 8,550 Eiffel Towers on top of each other. At any one point in time, Maersk Line is transporting cargo worth approximately three percent of the world's GNP (world GNP in 2005: USD 36,356,240,000,000). In 2009, Maersk Line vessels will make around 35,000 port calls - equivalent to approximately four port calls per hour or one call every 15 minutes.
