The Woolff gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed French artist Michel Maly. The exhibition opening on 16th September 2010 will be Michel Maly s first solo exhibition in the UK. Michel Maly was born in Blois in 1936. He lives and works in his hometown of Montelimar, where in 2009 he was presented the keys to the city: La Médaille de la ville de Montelimar. Since his first exhibition held in Lyon in 1959, Michel Maly has successfully completed over 85 exhibitions worldwide. In 1968 he was awarded the prestigious Prix Feneon, the prize of the University of Paris. His works are to be found in important French and foreign collections. A number of Michel s artworks have been purchased by national museums as well as by regional museums in Lyon and Southern France. Michel Maly s work spans over five decades and he has had three books and a film dedicated to his long and distinguished career. The Woolff gallery is delighted to be presenting a fantastic collection of Michel Maly s artworks from his still lifes, seascapes, city and landscapes, to figurative cafe scenes. This will be the most comprehensive collection of works seen for many years. NICK WOOLFF Michel Maly

Michel Maly Michel Maly: The drawing for me is the food of the canvas which will give the canvas a truth. That is why, while I am painting in nature, I don t only look at it, but I also breathe it and listen to it, in order to become totally impregnated with it. Alain Girard, the Ministerial Curator of the Art Museum of Bagnols-sur-ceze writes about Maly s Venice paintings: Maly is less interested in the picturesque quality of the town than in the wonderful sight of the buildings, glittering in the light and reflecting in the water. The renound buildings loom through the light or through the mist in gradual shades. An intimate combination of architecture, water and sky. The massive structure of the buildings dissolves in humidity and distorts transmitting colours into music. Maly has succeeded in uniting the movements of visible things such as gondoliers or people walking and of invisible things such as light, wind and time. Costa Gavras, the film maker: I know only a few painters who have dared to use light so sensitively and passionately as Maly has; both are bound together without constraint. Dominique Douay a French writer (b.1944) wrote: Maly is for me an example of a novelist painter. His paintings are so many chapters, they do not just see Venice and the North Sea, they tell us about these landscapes and the creatures that inhabit.
