History of Savonlinna Settlement in the area began around 900 AD. Olavinlinna Castle was built in 1475. Savonlinna received its city rights in 1639 from count Per Brahe. The Public School of Eastern Finland was established in 1639. Saimaa Canal was built in 1856, connection to the Baltic Sea The first Savonlinna Opera Festival was held in 1912. Teacher education started in Savonlinna in the 1950s. With the development of national parks in the area since 1980 s and summer festivals, Savonlinna has become one of the top summer tourism destinations in Finland 4

Geography of Savonlinna Savonlinna is located in the Lake Saimaa archipelago at an intersection of waterways. The city's surface area covers 3,597.71 square kilometres. About 38% of the city surface area is covered in water: this includes lakes Haukivesi, Pihlajavesi and Puruvesi. Lake Pihlajavesi alone has more than 3,800 islands. At the beginning of 2013, the city expanded with a merger of adjoining municipalities Punkaharju and Kerimäki Today, Savonlinna has some 37,000 inhabitants. Savonlinna is home to the world's largest wooden church in Kerimäki and Punkaharju scenic area where Finland s first tourist hotel was build in the 19th century. 7

One of the best known national parks in Finland: Linnansaari National Park is located in Savonlinna. It represents unspoiled Lake Saimaa nature The City of Savonlinna is renowned for its respect of nature and the environment: on March 2013, the city proclaimed itself the official home of the Saimaa ringed seal an endangered lake seal species living as a relic from ice age in the lakes around the city. 8
