Petroleum Geology, Global Warming and Energy Efficiency Campaign: Climate and Environmental Concerns - eni Children s Education Programme Hazaribag, Jharkhand (India), 8 th November, 2011 TILAIA DAM, JHARKAND Petroleum Geology, Global Warming and Energy Efficiency Campaign: Climate and Environmental Concerns eni Children s Education Programme Hazaribag, Jharkhand (India), 8 th November, 2011 Background history of Energy Efficiency Campaign This all started from the conference on Geology and Hydrocarbon Potential of the Neoproterozoic- Cambrian Basins in India, Pakistan and the Middle East, which was organized in February, 2008, by University of Jammu and MPRG, University College London, at Jammu, India. This conference was sponsored by eni India; EGI, University of Utah; ONGC, India; Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India; J&K State Council for Science and Technology and the Department of Geology and Mining, J&K Government. Dr. Bindra Thusu, one of the technical conveners of the conference, put forth the idea of this workshop, which was to inculcate the interest of geological science among the students of 10 th 12 th standards. The reason for selecting the students of this age group was to build their interest in geosciences and inspire them to choose this subject as a carrier. Another motive was to sensitize these young brains how to cope with Global Warming and Climate Change, because they are our future and they have to face this menace. This idea was welcomed by other technical conveners of the conference and it was 3
decided to organize the workshop two days before the conference on 19 th February, 2008. More than 150 students and accompanying teachers from 75 different schools of Jammu and Kashmir participated in this workshop. The first addition of the booklet on Petroleum Geology, Global Warming and Energy Efficiency was published and distributed among the students. The first copy of the booklet was presented to Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon ble Prime Minister of India, on 16 th February, 2008 at his residence in New Delhi. First eni Children s Education Programme launched at University of Jammu, Jammu (J&K, India) on 19 th February, 2008 The meeting with Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India to muster support for the Global conference on Neoproterozoic Hydrocarbon Potential of India, Pakistan and Middle East. The delegation included Dr. Bindra Thusu (MPRG, UCL), Prof Alan Smith (Cambridge University), Prof. G. M. Bhat (Jammu University) and Dr. Jonathan Craig (eni, Milan) 4
A lecture series were delivered by Dr. Jonathan Craig and Prof. G. M. Bhat in which the students were given a broad outline of petroleum systems and how hydrocarbons are generated and trapped, the consequences of the Global Warming and Climate Change due to the excessive usage of fossil fuels. The programme was well received by the students and everyone who attended it. It was also appreciated by the State Government and requested to repeat this activity for the children of Jammu and Kashmir State in three different provinces separately. After achieving the success and popularity, the programme was organized within a very short period of time in July 2008, at Leh and Kargil towns of Ladakh province of J&K. The events were organized by University of Jammu and MPRG, University College London and were sponsored by eni India under the umbrella of Corporate Business Sustainability Programme (sustenibilita@eni.com). Children s Education Programme at Leh and Kargil (J&K, India) on 19 th and 22 nd July, 2008 Subsequently, two programmes were organized in partnership with the Rajasthan State Education Department in Jodhpur in October 2008 and later in February 2009 in Jaisalmer for which the second edition of the booklet was published and distributed among the students. Later, in May 2009, the workshop was organized at S. P. College Srinagar, Kashmir where around 400 students, their teachers, faculty members of the S. P. College and parents of the Dr. Thusu (MPRG, UCL) and Prof. Bhat (University of Jammu) with their prizes at Getnergy Conference at Kuala Lampur, Malaysia in 2010. 5
children participated. The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir State, Mr. Omar Abdullah was highly impressed with the success of the programme and sent a letter of appreciation to the top management of eni at Milan. Based on the success, the eni Children s Education Programme attracted the prestigious Getenergy award for excellence in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia in 2010. Within the short period of two years, this programme achieved global appreciation and it was decided by eni e & p division in Milan to organize such programme beyond the subcontinent in different countries of the world. In 2010, the first international event of Children s Education Programme was held in Accra (Ghana) where eni is actively exploring for offshore oil and gas. This programme was held at University of Ghana in partnership with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, the Ministry of Education of the Republic Ghana, the Earth Sciences Department of the University of Ghana; MPRG, University College London; EGI, University of Utah and Institute of Energy Research and Training (IERT), University of Jammu. IERT was established at University of Jammu in May 2009, with the objective of developing a new centre of excellence for energy related research. The IERT was founded in collaboration between University of Jammu, University of Kashmir and Ministers of Government of J&K State. In November 2011, the Children s programme was organized for the fifth time in India and this time in Hazaribag city of Jharkhand State. Future programmes are planned in Ghana, Mozambique, Tanzania, Togo, Congo, Angola and Kenya in 2012-2014. The first international EEC Programme held at University of Ghana, Accra on 15 th September, 2010. 8

Dr. Hareshwar Sinha introduced the theme of the workshop, which was the sensitization of young brains with the concept of Energy Efficiency, Global Warming and Climate Change, for which he approached 22 different schools of Hazaribag to draw the students for this global energy efficiency campaign. Prof. G. M. Bhat presented the brief history of the Children s Energy Efficiency programme, which started in Jammu University in 2008 and subsequently organized at five different places in India and the first international event in Accra, Ghana in 2010. He remembered Acharya Vinoba Bhave who devoted his whole life for the social reconstruction and to protect the environment. The university in Hazaribag was aptly named after this great saint and the pioneer of Bhoodan (land gift) movement. Prof. Bhagat expressed his concern regarding the environmental pollution due to the exploitation of coal in the Jharkhand state, which in fact is supplying 40% of coal to the country but at the stake of environment. He highly appreciated the tireless efforts and allegiance by Dr. Jonathan Craig to launch this programme in India and abroad. Mr. Abhay Kumar Sinha, Lecturer, Department of Geography (VBU), conducted the proceedings of the inaugural function of the workshop and thanked all the speakers for their commendable speeches at the end of the inaugural session and requested the participants to pose for a group photograph. A press conference was held after the inaugural session where the local and national electronic media persons posed many questions regarding the energy, economy and environmental issues of the country. In addition, exercises were given to the students to differentiate various types of minerals on the basis of physical properties like colour, lustre, streak, fracture and specific gravity. Several igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks were introduced to the students and were educated with different processes of origin of these rocks. Many fossils were displayed and their history and importance in the geological record were demonstrated by the research scholars of IERT, University of Jammu and students of Department of Geology, Vinoba Bhave University. A kit of teaching material was provided to each student and accompanying teachers which included a booklet on Petroleum Geology, Global Warming. And Energy Efficiency Campaign: Climate and Environmental Concerns, a set of CDs of the eni presentations on Petroleum Geology and Exploration, Climate and Energy Efficiency, eni and IERT T-Shirt, writing pad, pen, pencil, eraser, sharpener and a carry bag.
