TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION Installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package Microsoft made some software changes which may cause problems in Collage; for example, the Gamma Editor no longer runs, or you may see an error message similar to The application failed to initialize correctly. It may not run correctly. This document applies to Collage client, Collage-S, Collage-E, Collage-L, and the standalone JawsRIP (CLS-JR). For Collage 3.1.22 through 3.1.25 This problem could occur on any Collage computer that is upgraded or on a new computer installed with Collage versions 3.1.22 through 3.1.25. To fix the problem, you must download a package from Microsoft called Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package and install it and any updates to it onto each Collage computer. Note that in version 3.1.26 and higher, the package will automatically install, but updates may not. Download the Package This package is not included In Collage versions 3.1.22 through 3.1.25, so you must download it from the Microsoft site. To download the package called Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package : 1. In Internet Explorer web browser, go to: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=200b2fd9-ae1a-4a14-984d- 389c36f85647&displaylang=en Note: It can be difficult to type that link correctly (it must be typed all on one line). There are two versions of this package. Be sure to download the x86 (32bit) version. 2. On the page for click the Download button. 3. If you only have one Collage computers, click Run to immediately install the file. If you have multiple Collage computers, save it to the desktop by clicking Save If you saved the file, locate it and copy it to all Collage computers. Installing After downloading, close any open applications and do the following: 1. Double-click the file vcredist_x86.exe If asked if you should trust the publisher, click OK to run the program. 2 9430-0202 18 July 2012
2. A window displays with the license agreement for the program. Click Yes to continue 3. A progress window displays. When the window disappears, the program has been installed. You can delete the vcredist_x86.exe file from your computer. Updating You must check for updates to this program next. There is a security update that must be installed for Collage to work properly. Microsoft will eventually recognize that this program needs an update, if you want to wait (and if you have Windows configured to check for updates, which you should). If you want to force an update check, do the following: In Windows 7 1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button, and then typing Windows Update in the Search box. 2. On the left side of the page, click Check for Updates. After some time, Windows should say: 18 July 2012 9430-0202 3
3. Click the text 1 important update is available. You should see a file for Visual Studio 2005: 4. Click OK (at the bottom of the page), then click Install Updates. When you check the installed programs, you should see this package. Don t worry if you also have a Visual C++ package for 2008. In Windows XP To check for updates: 1. 2. Click the Custom button. After a few moments, you should see a High-priority update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. 3. Install the Security Update. For Collage 3.1.26 or higher This problem could occur on any Collage computer that is upgraded to Collage 3.1.26 (from 3.1.21 or lower), or on a new computer installed with Collage 3.1.26. The Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package is now included in the Collage install, and will be automatically installed when Collage is installed, if it is not already installed. However, any updates to the package may not be automatically installed. After installing Collage with the Visual C++ 2005 package, you must perform a Windows update to see if there are any updates to this package. If so, install them. Upgrades to VC 2005 Redistributable Please note that from now on, you must install any upgrades from Microsoft that are for Visual Studio 2005. 18 July 2012 9430-0202 5
