A long-standing tradition Zinc: with us since the dawn of time Zinc is a truly international metal. It was used in ancient times in Greece and Egypt for jewellery and funeral urns. Much later, during the Middle Ages, it was produced in the form of metal in China and India. In fact zinc first came to Europe from China at the end of the Middle Ages. It is therefore fitting that VM ZINC should now return this noble metal to Asia in new and exciting forms and applications. VM ZINC: almost 00 years of history From its birth in 87 and for over70 years the Société des Mines et des Fonderies de Zinc de la Vieille Montagne was to establish zinc s pedigree and develop its application in the roofing industry. Zinc rapidly played a dominant role, especially in the building of modern Paris under the influence of Baron Haussman. In 8, the Compagnie Royale Asturienne des Mines was founded. A hundred and forty years later, in 987, the two companies merged to become Vieille Montagne France and in 99 they joined the Umicore Group. Zinc has become the emblem of modern Paris for the entire world and its zinc roofs, evoked in films, artistic photography and paintings, are a testimony to the natural beauty and enduring qualities of this exceptional material. 80% of the roofs in Paris are currently covered with zinc.

VM ZINC's great feature How the patina is formed O O CO H O CO zinc hydroxide ZINC 6 months to years CO Natural protective basic zinc hydroxicarbonate layer commonly called patina zinc hydroxicarbonate to years The light grey patina takes between six months and two years to form, depending on the climate, the exposure of the site and the composition of the atmosphere. The patina is made up of two parts: A first, very compact layer consisting of very dense basic zinc carbonate crystals is formed and adheres to the zinc. This first layer protects the zinc completely and slows down its interaction with the oxygen in the air. A second, less uniform layer, made up of zinc oxide or hydroxide, which is less adhesive and more porous, is also formed. Although it plays a less important role, it is still useful as its neutralises the effect of the acidity of rain or other external factors on the zinc. Long lasting Zinc is naturally resistant to corrosion, it protects itself by developing a patina that gives it an exceptional long life span. With an averagecorrosion rate of μm/year, even very thin (0.7 mm) rolled zinc can achieve 70 to 00 years life depending on the environment. Low maintenance In addition to its long life span, zinc is a low maintenance material. It does not have a coating or varnish that wears out over time and needs to be reapplied. In fact, zinc continues to develop a protective layer (patina) throughout its life and will self-repair imperfections or scratches. Marine environments In a marine environment, along a coastal strip of several kilometres in width, the composition of the patina is different. It is relatively compact and insoluble and consists of zinc oxychloride, but plays the same protective role.
Elegant material Whether it is used in renovation or new construction, traditional or avant-garde designs, zinc is an elegant partner for many building envelope materials, blending with wood, glass, stone and other materials in complete harmony. Green material Zinc is a non-toxic, durable, recyclable and plentiful material. As an essential trace element, zinc is also vital to biological equilibrium and growth. Zinc used in the building industry is 00% recycled, putting it far ahead of many other materials which are just taking their first steps in recycling. Less energy is required to produce zinc than the other principal metals. The energy balance is even more favourable in recycled zinc. This excellent result clearly proves the contribution of VM ZINC to sustainable development. Versatile application VM ZINC has developed specific roofing and facade systems that use all the qualities of zinc, from traditional roofing techinich Standing Seam system to Flat lock panle, Interlocking panel, to preformed ADEKA, DEXTER systems, Cassettes. system, to response to architects' expectations. Malleability VM ZINC provides the freedom to create architectural masterpieces which are difficult to realise with other construction materials. It is very malleable and can therefore meet virtually every architectural demand and provide solutions that less flexible materials cannot. Architects appreciate this versatility which allows them great freedom of expression in designing the roof and cladding of a building. Zinc resolves a large number of design issues and allows interesting treatments of corners and angles, creating an almost infinite variety of shapes: straight, curved, convex or concave.
A top performing alloy VM ZINC is composed of very high quality zinc Z (99,99% pure zinc), as defined by the EN 79 standard, to which titanium and copper are added. The PREMIUMZINC quality label The European Standard EN 988 has been applied since 997 in 8 European countries. This standard imposes very stringent specifications for the composition of rolled zinc and its physical, mechanical and dimensional characteristics, which make it an international reference. Whilst the VM ZINC brand complies with all the specifications of the EN 988 standard, we have gone beyond the requirements of this standard to create the PRE- MIUMZINC quality label. This certification offers an even higher level of quality than EN 988 certification. The PREMIUMZINC label actually demands stricter specifications for some measurements, particularly flatness, chemical composition and some mechanical properties (bend test at C, Erichsen test) not defined under the EN 988 standard and of interest to roofers and transformers. European EN 988 and PREMIUMZINC quality requirements are met as shown in the following table. Physical characteristics of VM ZINC titanium zinc Density 7. kg/dm Thermal expansion coefficient 0.0 mm/m/ parallel to the rolling direction) Melting point 0 C Recrystallization Point 00 C Heat conductivity 0 W/(m.K) Electrical conductivity 7 MS/m Danger of sparking Non-sparking Magnetic properties Diamagnetic Physical characteristics of VM ZINC titanium zinc Copper increases the mechanical resistance of the alloy, making it harder and stronger. Titanium increases creep resistance permitting greater thermal expansion and contraction of the material without causing metal fatigue. 6

VM ZINC original surface aspects VM ZINC offers a variety of finishes ranging from natural zinc to preweathered zinc. Natural VM ZINC When the zinc leaves the rolling mill it has a shiny, metallic surface aspect which changes over time as a natural, semi-mat, light grey patina is formed. The natural light grey zinc has a textured, luminous quality that evokes the world of minerals. It enhances the appearance of the building from the very first day and for years to come. Preweathered VM ZINC Preweathered VM ZINC offer five different surface aspects. These are obtained by immersing natural VM ZINC in a solution which modifies the crystalline structure of the surface of the metal. This treatment is a durable chemical conversion of the surface structure of the metal. QUARTZ-ZINC has an appearance, from the start, similar to that of the natural patina normally obtained after several years of exposure to the atmosphere. ANTHRA-ZINC is a dark grey zinc, often used with various materials because its charcoal aspect compliments this combination. PIGMENTO range is based on QUARTZ-ZINC to which mineral pigments are added. colours are available: PIGMENTO Ash blue, PIGMENTO Autumn red PIGMENTO Lichen green. 8 These colours, with their subtly changing reflections, inspire new ideas and blend perfectly with other materials. The coloured finish preserves the natural texture of preweathered zinc.

Basic principles Thanks to our long experience in using zinc, we recommend that you consider Umicore Building Products as a source of information and as a safety factor in the design of your project. Below are the building principles which should be taken into account to make your project a great success. In many cases the building basics for roofs and facades are the same. Both require managing condensation and ventilation. Both are also submitted to climatic stresses like wind, heat, rain and snow. Umicore Building Products is your bridge to over a century of experience with this material. Don t hesitate to contact us. Ventilation Ventilation ensures that the dew point does not occur on the underside of the zinc. The air gap located beneath the support allows the evacuation of humidity caused by internal condensation. The following rules apply with low to moderate hygrometry levels. Roof ventilation rules Air gap is necessary to allow the evacuation of humidity. In addition, if water infiltration occurs, moisture can be absorbed by the wood support and evacuated through the air gap. This air gap should have a minimum thickness of 0 mm. If the slope exceeds metres, this minimum should be 60 mm. To ensure the proper airflow in the ventilation space, an air inlet should be set at the eaves and an outlet at the ridge. Cladding ventilation rules In general, building facades can be divided into two main categories: curtain walls rain screen walls. A curtain wall is a sealed cladding, the building is completely isolated from the exterior facade by a sealed airtight cavity. Normally there is no ventilation happens behind curtain wall. A rain-screen wall is an open cladding which allow the ingress of some water. The cavity behind the cladding is drained and the ventilation at the back promotes rapid evaporation or removal of any water ingress. For example: a masonry cavity wall incorporating a water barrier, flashing and frequent, narrow width openings (weep holes) is this type of rainscreen wall. 0 For most zinc cladding, the air gap must be 0 mm minimum, to ensure air inlet at the bottom and air outlet at the top.
Compatibility Zinc in relation with timber A low or non-acid solid, natural and non treated timber deck, that is, with a ph of between and 7 is compatible with zinc and can be used as a direct support. Zinc in relation with other metals Contact between zinc and other metals must take into account the electro-chemical reactions caused by a difference in electrical potential between the surfaces of the metals. Therefore a certain number of contacts are acceptable whilst others must be avoided. Compatible metals Lead Aluminium Galvanised Steel Compatible timber Pine Spruce Scots pine Poplar Incompatible metals Copper Steel (Non galvanised) Incompatible timber Larch Oak Chestnut Red cedar Douglas fir White cedar Gum tree

Roofing & cladding systems Standing seam Double Lock Standing Seam Single Lock Standing Seam The traditional system widely used throughout the world Its flexibility and its discreet joints makes it suitable for every architectural design Maximum wind resistance Fast and easy installation makes it a cost effective solution Description of the system Standing seam is a single folded or double folded seam. The use of profiling and seaming machines for the closure of longitudinal seam joints significantly reduces installation time. The low height of the seams ( or mm) contributes to the modernity, lightness and regularity of the roof and facade, while highlighting its architectural purpose. When dealing with more complex designs this system presents a more technologically advanced appearance. The standing seam technique is particularly suitable for very large roof and facade surfaces and for structures located in regions of harsh climate, which are often subject to strong winds, heavy rain and snowfall (mountain or continental climate). VM ZINC and traceability It is very easy to recognise a VM ZINC rolled product: all our rolled zinc has continuous ink marking which indicates, among other things, the thickness of the metal and the date and place it was produced. Formed products are generally stamped. ertified quality Our brand and surface aspect Logo Zinc alloyed with copper and titanium Quality Label Dutch label European standard Plant Thickness Production code
Handling and storing VM ZINC Storage recommendations In order to preserve the quality of VM ZINC, the following recommendations should be strictly respected: Sheets and coils must be stored in a well-ventilated, sheltered and dry warehouse, with a constant temperature so as to avoid condensation build-up. Sheets and coils must be separated from the ground by a pallet, which allows sufficient air space for the correct ventilation of the products. Storage time for sheets and coils must be as short as possible, especially on the building site. If the zinc is mishandled, folds or bumps can form. Cracks may occur in these places years later. Due to the effects of expansion and contraction, deep scratches can cause cracks either during forming or after installation. In order to avoid deformation of the metal, sheets must be stored flat on the pallet. When coils are shipped, they may be placed either on their horizontal axis or vertical axis, depending on the client s request. It is recommended that the coils be stored in their original packaging. If coils are to be stacked due to lack of storage space, the following recommendations must be respected: If the coils are delivered on their horizontal axis, the pallets must be stored in their original packaging, and preferably individually on separating racks; If the coils are delivered on their vertical axis, the pallets may be stored on top of one another, up to a maximum of pallets for reasons of stability. Storage and ventilation The phenomenon of white powder has absolutely no connection with the formation of a natural patina. If there is no ventilation (poor storage, transportation or installation conditions), zinc hydroxide which is powdery, non-adhesive and nonprotective, is formed. This phenomenon prevents the formation of the natural protective patina and the zinc corrodes more easily.
