As a single source supplier, we will provide a superior quality, fully integrated installation, backed with unrivalled service and parts support with an exceptional range of finance and ownership options. Products include diesel and gas powered gensets, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and switchgear coordinated with Cat generator systems. Standby generators from our Olympian range are available immediately from stock, in open and sound-attenuated form. Cat based complete packages are simple to specify and buy, easy to install and operate, with a wide range of factory-designed and supported options. These include single- and three-phase, low and high voltages, paralleling capabilities, sound-attenuated enclosures Green issues dominate Environmental awareness and positive actions drive our future. Optimising renewable energy, and combined heat and power that use energy more efficiently; Cat ACERT industry-leading technology minimises emissions. We at Finning constantly review new fuels technology: Every area for improvement is a priority.
Finning Power Systems are international leaders in implementing new technology. So far we have provided installations fuelled by diesel and natural gas with a combined generating capacity of more than 1.25GW. These are in locations as diverse as Azerbaijan and central Europe, spanning four continents. Applications include combined heat and power (CHP), power generation from sewage and landfill gases, animal waste, field gases, and many other fuels. Control and management systems help power producers and commercial users to effectively manage energy supply and demand: Distributed generation on site or at a substation is an economical way to deploy capital investment for a reliable power supply. Thanks to a range of ownership and operating options, users of generator sets benefit from savings in overall energy costs from distributed generation. Each power project is analysed in relation to fuel input, logistics and cost. Design and feasibility studies on plant and implementation, with financial modelling on a full lifecycle cost approach, enable us to recommend the equipment to maximise return on investment. Each challenge is unique, and we work closely with our customers to create the best power solution. Supermarket success A leading UK supermarket chain is installing Finning standby systems as insurance against costly power-outs. Failures of in-store systems, checkouts, and stores plunged into darkness are simply unacceptable in today s fiercely competitive retail environment. Standby diesel gensets are tailored to each store s situation, whether installation is in existing premises or new build. Finning offers the full range of Caterpillar diesel and gaseous fuelled gensets standardised in a range from 2kW to over 16MW for standby power applications. The range extends to off the shelf Olympian gensets, a Caterpillar brand. Cat software is used to analyse site conditions and evaluate load requirements, including motor starting and nonlinear loads. This enables us to recommend the best generator for your application. Attention to quality is total, and each package is rigorously tested before installation by our factory-trained technicians. Units are then immediately ready to power your assembly line, maintain a computer centre, or secure the safety and movement of people in public buildings, hospitals, data centres, hotels and supermarkets. We provide full turnkey project solutions and also offer individual elements of our services. Finning Power Systems
For applications such as data centres where you cannot afford to be without electricity for even for a split second, a Cat uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is the complete answer. It prevents lost data, productivity and business. This ultimate power security solution maintains glitch-free uninterrupted power while your standby generator comes on line. Kinetic power cell technology insures against a full range of power events: More reliable and less costly to operate than conventional battery systems, stored flywheel energy maintains power whilst auxiliary power is established. This total power conditioning provides unblinking support for critical loads during any transition period from mains to standby. Available from 100kW to 3.6MW, the Cat UPS has a small footprint, and the highest industry efficiency, with some of the most advanced features available. Finning experience and expertise ensure a complete solution. Caterpillar gas-powered engine generator sets have a rugged build quality which enables them to operate on a wide range of gas types and qualities. Fuels include gas from landfill sites, sewage and mines gas. With more than 300 Cat generator sets of over 1MW in operation in the UK, producing in excess of 315MW of renewable power in total, Finning is the nation s leading supplier of biogas and low-energy fuel generators. Projects include power generation solutions from sewage-derived biogas for Anglian Remote monitoring and control Our microprocessor-based control, operating and data gathering system LIMA provides interactive control over all engine systems, with full bi-directional integration into custom SCADA and building management systems. Many critical generator applications in Europe, including major hospitals and large data centres, utilise LIMA for fully automatic, fault tolerant control of a site s entire electrical system. LIMA provides an extremely high level of remote functionality and control, with capabilities well in excess of any other dedicated generator control and monitoring system. Water, Thames Water, Southern Water and Wessex Water, as well as many of the UK s major landfill operators. Achieving maximum uptime for the most effective through-life cost defines the return on investment: Landfill operators require high availability from their plant, often running at full load for over 8000 hours a year. Most sites now operate unmanned and autonomously, so remote monitoring has become an increasingly important element of a full operation-and-maintenance agreement. Remote functionality at our 24/7/365 control desk is at the same level as on-site, enabling our monitoring technicians to take prompt action to restore operation after an outage often eliminating the need for a site visit. And should attention prove to be necessary, the engineer will bring the right equipment to resolve the problem. The quality of service is a major deciding factor when awarding new contracts: With Finning, high uptime is assured, equipment is backed by our extensive service network. This includes scheduled full as new engine rebuilds. Landfill gas provides power At the Biffa landfill site at Poplars in Staffordshire, landfill gas is harvested via a number of extraction wells. These provide power to five Cat generator sets, capable of producing a total of 7.5MW of power for the National Grid. This is a particularly challenging situation, as the gas burnt is particularly aggressive due to the presence of silicone from deteriorating refuse. Additionally, hot water from the engines cooling system is used to provide heat to the leachate lagoon. Management with scheduled maintenance by Finning ensures a reliable long term solution.
Combined heat and power (CHP) is fuel-efficient energy technology that makes use of by-product heat normally lost into the environment when heat is generated by mechanical prime movers. CHP applications can increase overall fuel efficiency to over 95%, compared with 40% from conventional methods. Finning and Caterpillar have immense experience in CHP for durability, economy and reliability, and helping customers reach environmental targets. Efficient heat recovery systems harvest heat from the engine block s water jacket, oil coolers and exhaust gases: The resultant hot water or steam is used for a process or application. Cat engines can run with cooling water at up to 127ºC, enabling high temperature water delivery at up to 150ºC. We also have good experience of steam raising including design, supply and installation of boilers into new and existing facilities. Hospitals under the PFI scheme in particular are benefiting from our CHP installations. From the largest turnkey installation to the smallest gas engine, we deliver a tailored solution including feasibility studies, design, project management, installation, followed by operation and maintenance. Thames Water A 2.3MW biogas CHP with a 2MW diesel standby generator for Thames Water s Long Reach sewerage works in east London. This is a critical site, requiring maximum operational uptime. Controls will prioritise power supply in the event of a failure. This installation is financed and managed by Finning. North Sea Power Six C10 ATEX certified electronic engines have been designed and supplied to power tower cranes for the North Sea, all are constructed to operate in a Zone 2 hazardous area. The Finning petroleum sales and engineering team provides electric and mechanical power solutions for drilling, well servicing, and emergency power for both offshore and onshore applications. Also base load power generation for remote pumping stations, designed to run on natural gas, crude oil, and distillate diesel. Finning is a leader in engines for pipeline pumping and firewater pump protection. These can be configured and packaged to operate in hazardous areas typically refineries and offshore platforms with the risk of flammable gas in the air. We have a high capability to design for full zoned area operation including the supply of specialist equipment unique to these applications including EExd rated equipment, non-sparking components and exhaust coolers. Our organisation has experience worldwide of designing, supplying, installing and commissioning highly specialised systems to ensure that the optimum solution is achieved. Finning Power Systems
