Remove bag from unit. 2. Remove belt cover. Retain bolts for reassembly. Remove bolt on each side to remove belt cover. 3. Use a flashlight to inspect the orientation of the bottom double pulley. The flat side of the pulley must face the front of the machine (toward the brush head), the dish side of the pulley must face the engine, and the belts must align between the upper and lower pulleys. Correctly-installed Pulley Incorrectly-installed Pulley 2
If the pulley orientation is correct and belts align: 4. Reinstall belt cover and secure with bolts removed earlier. 5. Use a permanent marker to place one black line on the model / serial number label to show that the unit was inspected and the pulley orientation was correct. Inspected and Pulley Orientation was Correct 6. Cover unit with plastic bag and staple bag into place. If pulley orientation is incorrect: 4. Remove the two bolts that secure the tractor frame to the brush head assembly. 5. Use a 9/16 wrench to remove one bolt from each side of the tractor frame. Discard bolts. Remove one bolt on each side of frame. 6. Use a 1/2" socket to remove two bolts from the front of the engine that retain the belt guide and remove guide. Discard hardware; retain guide. 7. Pull back on the lower portion of the handlebar to create access to the lower pulley. (The rod in the bottom of tractor frame keeps the unit from separating.) 8. Use a 1/2 socket on a ratchet to remove the center bolt from the pulley and remove pulley from driveshaft. Discard hardware. 9. Remove three bolts in hub and discard. 3
10. Separate the pulley from the hub and move hub to opposite side of the pulley. Replace with three 1/2 tapping screws (p/n 07411500). Torque to 17 20 lbf-ft (23 27 N m). 11. Place belts around pulley and secure with a cable tie (p/n 00111910) to retain the belts during the pulley assembly process. 12. Install lower pulley onto driveshaft with belts attached. Install one 3/4 hex bolt (p/n 05947300) and one 5/16 lock washer (p/n 06307400). Tighten bolt to 17 20 lbf-ft (23 27 N m). 13. Push handlebar forward and install two 1 serrated hex flange washer head bolts (p/n 07049900) to secure tractor frame to brush assembly. Torque bolts to 27 35 lbf-ft (36 47 N m). 14. Holding belts tight to keep them from falling off pulley, install them over the engine pulley using the engine recoil starter rope as an aid. Cut cable tie when needed to seat. (Be careful not to cut or damage belt.) Verify belts are aligned between upper and lower pulleys. 15. Reinstall the belt guide onto the engine using two 3/4 hex bolts (p/n 05947300), two 1/16 flat washers (p/n 06437200) and two 1/8 lock washers (p/n) 06437400. 4
16. Loosen bolts and adjust belt finger to proper position. With clutch engaged, the belt finger opposite of the belt idler must be less than 1/8 (3 mm) from the belts, but not touching the belts. Tighten bolts and recheck the clearance. Push idler in this direction until it stops to simulate clutch being engaged. There should be less than 1/8 (3 mm) clearance between belts and belt finger. Belt finger should not touch belts. 17. Reinstall belt cover and use a 3/8" socket to tighten. 18. Use a permanent marker to place two black lines on the model / serial number label to show that the unit was inspected and the pulley orientation was corrected. Inspected and Reworked 19. Recover unit with plastic bag and staple bag into place. For further information, contact Ariens Company Technical Service at (920) 756-4688. 5
