COMPARATIVE & SUPERLATIVE UNIT 5 Lesson 3 Comparing People and Things In English we usually use adjectives to compare things or people. Adjectives are three kinds Short adjectives hot cold high long tall short Long adjectives beautiful expensive important correct difficult popular Irregular adjectives good bad

UNIT 5 Lesson 3 In English we usually compare people or things in two ways : Between two More than two 1. Short Adjectives : S 1 + ( am / is / are ) + [ short adj + er ] + than + S 2 e.g. - Ahmed is bigger than Ibraheem. - I am faster than my brother. 2. Long Adjectives : S 1 + ( am / is / are ) + more + adjective + than + S 2 e.g. - Ali s car is more expensive than Khalid s car. - Jeddah is more beautiful than Taif.

More than two 1. Short adjectives: S + ( am / is / are ) + the + [ short adj + est ] +. e.g. - Ahmed is the tallest in the class. - I am the fastest in the team. 2. Long adjectives: S + ( am / is / are ) + the + most + adjective +. e.g. - Ali s car is the most expensive in the city. - Jeddah is the most beautiful city in Saudi Arabia.

More than two: S + ( am / is / are ) + the + least + adjective +. e.g. - My sister is the least tall in our family. - Question ( C ) is the least important.

comparing two similar things : When you want to compare two things or persons that are similar, you can t use the pervious rules because they are SIMILAR. We can use the following rule instead: S 1 + ( am / is / are ) + as + adjective + as + S 2 e.g. - Ahmed is as tall as Ali. - Jeddah is as beautiful as Riyadh. UNIT 5 Lesson 3 * Negative comparing S 1 + ( am / is / are ) + not + as + adjective + as + S 2 e.g. - Ahmed is not as tall as Ali. - Jeddah is not as beautiful as Riyadh.
