Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2 0 1 6 / 2 0 1 7 Ostrava, Czech Republic August 31 to September 3, 2016 I N F O R M A T I O N N o. 1

One of the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2016/2017 events, CZECH SKATE 2016, is held in Ostrava, Czech Republic, from August 31 to September 3, 2016. The organizers are proud and pleased that they have been appointed to host this important and prominent event. Having organized the Czech Skate competitions (several years for Senior categories and then eight times as ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating events and once as the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final) as well as ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2003, the town of Ostrava and the Moravian-Silesian Region are proud of having a chance to welcome the Skating Family again. The Organizing Committee is also using the Czech Skate competition as the last rehearsal for the ISU European Figure Skating Championships 2017 which is organized in the same venues and hotels in January 2017. This material gives the necessary and useful pieces of information about the region, Venue, Hotels and other facilities, as well as about the Organizing Committee. Region The city of Ostrava has the population of about 312,000. It is the industrial centre of North Moravia and Silesia and thanks to the nearby Beskydy and Jeseniky Mountains it has also good conditions for sports, especially for skiing, hiking and biking. Figure skating has a long tradition in this region; these days we can find here one of the three Junior Figure Skating Centres which have been established in the Czech Republic. OSTRAVA A UNIQUE INDUSTRIAL CITY Ostrava is the third largest city in the Czech Republic and the largest urban centre in the Moravian-Silesian Region. It occupies a strategic position 360 km east of the Czech capital Prague and 310 km north of Vienna, and is close to the border with Poland (which is just 10 km north of the city centre), and 60 km north-west of the border with Slovakia. The logo of Ostrava is made up of three exclamation marks, perfectly painting the picture of the city's vitality, energy and confidence. Ostrava is known for its unique industrial architecture and the earthy character of the local people. Vítkovice Lower Area, listed as a European cultural heritage site, offers stunning panoramas and walking around the heart of the steel city is an unforgettable experience. Technical monuments as well as Ostrava s wealth and pride are being discovered and admired by people from around the world. NHL Lower Vitkovice, forming the distinctive skyline of Ostrava, offers a unique experience combined with an industrial atmosphere. The Colours of Ostrava festival and the Janacek May festival moved into the factory space in 2012, with concerts taking place around the gas tank and adjacent areas. The factory includes a 75 metre high blast furnace, which can be climbed providing views of the nearby Karolina and Trojhalí, soon to be interconnected. This development has given rise to a new neighbourhood full of artists, modern art galleries, cafes, museums, convention and exhibition spaces. page 2
