Executive Director General: In May 2016, the process to amalgamate the four current Skate Canada Ontario Sections and Skate Ontario, the recognized provincial sport organization (PSO) into one unified Ontario Section: Skate Canada Ontario Section (SC Ontario) was approved by the membership of Skate Canada. A Transition Committee will be appointed to facilitate the creation of the new Ontario Section. Effective April 1, 2017, SC Ontario will be the largest Skate Canada Section and the provincial sport organization (PSO) for skating in Ontario with approximately 75,000 participants and 360 member clubs/skating schools. SC Ontario is responsible for the promotion and development of figure skating in Ontario. Our mission is to engage in sustainable practices to enable all to participate safely in skating for fun, fitness, service and achievement. Position Summary: We are seeking an inspirational, experienced, diplomatic, and creative professional for the position of Executive Director (ED). This innovative and challenging full time permanent salaried position requires a leader with the ability to build a dynamic team and operationally facilitate the amalgamation of the five current organizations. Ongoing, the Executive Director will be responsible for the overall management and leadership of the day-to-day activities of the organization and its staff and oversee the creation, growth and development of SC Ontario aligned with the strategic objectives of the organization. Accountable to: During the design of the new Section, the ED will be reporting to the Chair of the Transition Committee and the current Board of Skate Ontario. From April 2017 onward, direct reporting to the Board of Directors with specific reporting to the Chair of SC Ontario Internal Relations: Supervision of all staff and works closely with the Transition Committee and the sitting Board of Skate Ontario. Acts as a resource to the Board to ensure that policy decisions are made on an informed basis. Line manager to senior management team. The building of the senior management team will be one of the first responsibilities of the ED position. External Relationships: Member Clubs, Officials and Coaching communities, Skate Canada, Ontario Ministry of Tourism Culture and Sport, Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, Ontario Winter Games, Canada Winter Games, other Provincial Sport Organizations, Educational Institutions, Special Olympics Ontario, Media, and Corporate Partners Specific Responsibilities: Strategic Vision and Leadership: Serve as SC Ontario s primary spokesperson, and through professional leadership develop and enhance relationships with the membership and stakeholders Identify and submit funding applications Coordinate with the Transition Committee, the Chair and Board of Directors to develop, implement, manage, and monitor a five year strategic plan Develop and recommend a yearly Operational Plan and ensure resource and staff alignment to the plan Provide superlative leadership and direction to all staff and contractors and develop a professional, positive and efficient work place environment and culture 3-May-16 Page 2 of 5
Member Relationships: Develop a strong client focus when dealing with clubs, athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers Maintain a focus on highlighting and demonstrating the benefits and services offered to the stakeholders of SC Ontario Be responsible for innovative and continued improvement in programming supporting the major performance strategic objectives of SC Ontario Board of Directors Relationship: Develop a strong, accountable and transparent working relationship with the Transition Committee and Board of Directors and strive for unparalleled open, respectful and effective communication Report to the Board on a regular basis with regard to operational and strategic activities, programming delivery, recommendations for programming, funding opportunities etc. Coordinate recommendations for approval by the Board Ensure the Board of Directors have the necessary information and resources to make timely effective decisions Provide ongoing updates on strategic objectives and facilitate an annual review of the strategic plan and any Board approved revisions With the financial committee, develop and facilitate the annual budgeting process for Board approval Financial Management: Preparation, development and presentation of the annual operating and capital budget for board approval Analysis and stewardship of financial results to the board on a schedule as defined by the board Complete risk analysis and ensure appropriate segregation of duties, sound business practices and controls exist and are monitored in accordance with defined risk Ensure that all financial and accounting functions are achieved within established timelines and contract terms Ensure expenditures are within approved budget parameters Ensure funding agreements and associated reporting obligations are completed within established deadlines Seek out and ensure timely submission of funding applications supporting Skate Ontario programming Ensure organizational financial accountability, responsibility and transparency across services, programming and objectives 3-May-16 Page 3 of 5
Stakeholder Relationships: As primary spokesperson for SC Ontario, ensure that a positive public profile is presented at all times aligned with the mandate to promote and develop figure skating in the province of Ontario Maintain and enhance professional, positive, and effective working relationships with the key external stakeholders including but not limited to: Skate Canada, and the Provincial Government of Ontario and its agencies (including the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, and Ontario Trillium Foundation) To seek out and develop partnerships with other organizations including corporate sponsors in order to advance the sport of skating, increase participation, and help SC Ontario reach its strategic objectives Human Resources: Build a diverse staff team capable of successfully implementing the strategic and operating plans of SC Ontario, meeting all agreed objectives and timelines, supporting our membership and stakeholders needs, and delivering SC Ontario programming With vision and innovation, implement and oversee a blended structure that will incorporate both centralized and regional working locations Establish an organization wide focus on outstanding client service Develop and maintain a positive work environment conducive to creating an empowered, confident and motivated workforce capable of achieving and exceeding their responsibilities and objectives Ensure that all Transition and SC Ontario committees are provided with the appropriate staff support to conduct, coordinate, and complete their stated objectives Experience/Qualification/Skills: An astute, credible, and professional builder/leader able to establish clear priorities, delegate, and lead by example Superlative relationship building skills Sound organizational and managerial experience with ability to oversee a diverse workforce in multiple locations Confident communicator and spokesperson with the ability to work effectively with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders Flexible and receptive to ideas and feedback Ability to motivate and direct positive change management Willing to dedicate full time attention to responsibilities and objectives and to accomplish these with integrity, loyalty, transparency, and accountability Minimum of bachelor degree in business and/or sports management 3-May-16 Page 4 of 5
Preferred prior experience in oversight of a provincial or national sport organization Preferred knowledge and practical experience of skating structure in Canada Experience in the successful development and execution of strategic plans Vulnerable Sector clearance within past two years Fluency in English and strong English writing skills Bilingual English/French preferred Valid driver s license Able to work weekends and evenings when position requires Remuneration: The position will offer a competitive salary for the not for profit community commensurate with experience.
