DEPARTMENT INFORMATION & RULES: 1. All state rules and local rules apply. 2. This department is open to amateur organizations and associations, individual hobbyists, and student groups. Entrant should state on entry form which type he/she represents. Listed exhibitor or group must have designed and had the major role in installing the display. Groups must indicate the group name and contact person responsible for the group. Number of entries is limited in all Divisions--one per class in Division 510, six per class in Division 512, four per class in Division 520 & 545 and three per class in Divisions 530 540. Number of gardens accepted for display is also limited to space available. Limit of one per exhibitor group in Divisions 520 545. 3. Size of Entries: Garden Tableau size approximately 8 x10 Focus Garden size approximately 6 x6 Restoration Display (Division 520) 20 sq ft (approx. 4-5 feet per side) free-standing floor display Community Beautification & School Garden Landscape Displays, Division 530 & 540 70 square feet of visual space, including vertical elements Youth Beautification & School Garden Usage Divisions 535 & 545 2½ x 4 table space (Similar size freestanding available with previous notice to coordinator.) 4. No artificial plant material is permitted in exhibits, except as specified. 5. A rough plan of each Tableau garden including major features & type of plants used should be sent to Garden Coordinator c/o Entry Department or e-mailed on or before entry close date. Tableaus will be located indoors, remembering that shade-loving plants have a better chance of remaining healthy while on display. Replacement of deteriorating sun-lovers may be done during maintenance time, June 15 & 18. (See calendar.) Two Tableau gardens may be requested for display outdoors on turfed area. Plot assignments will be determined in order of entry and by plan requirements. Class title modifications may only be made for design harmonization and with the prior approval of the Department Coordinator. 6. The purpose of the Tableau and Focus Divisions is to showcase a portion of a garden for maximum visual impact, while showing practical usage concepts. Each entry should act as an ideal garden setting with attractive plant materials and should provide local homeowners with landscape ideas they can visualize in their own yards. Display Gardens differ somewhat from practical plantings and rely heavily on exaggeration of visual design elements, while still employing practical garden design: More and tighter spacing of plants enhances the effectiveness of the display. Large shapes and a variety of textures create interest. Clustering similar elements makes a greater effect mass for impact. Repetition of colors, elements & groups helps visually organize the whole. Enclosing groups of plants with a continuous border gives the impression of a raised bed. Elements on differing levels give each more notice. Use a variety of foliage form & color round, spikey, frilly both grouped & juxtaposed for interest. Identification of plant materials is expected. Significant educational elements may be featured in the garden, as long as they do not detract from its beauty. 7. Each Tableau & Focus garden exhibit must have a minimum of 30% of the entire exhibit in plant color without prior approval of Department Coordinator. Waiving of rule on color will be based on design considerations appropriate to chosen class only (e.g. primarily herbs or cactus need not have full 30%, but should include generous amounts). 8. Exhibits will be judged on a variety of factors including the appropriateness of the solution to the criteria selected. Each garden Tableau will be judged initially against a standard of workmanship and for special awards against other similar gardens in the division. See garden scorecard. 9. Exhibitors must label plants with common and/or botanical name or display a plot plan identifying and locating all plant material used in the gardens. This will account for 15% of the score. 10. Entry cards identifying exhibitor will be provided by show Management. Exhibitor provided signs crediting sponsors or exhibitor group name must be tasteful and appropriate to the exhibit. Management reserves the right of final approval and may remove any signs deemed unacceptable. 11. Exhibits must be maintained in a fresh state with adequate care of plant material. Replacement of all dead or deteriorating materials must be made to the satisfaction of the Fair Management. Periodic checking by exhibitor will help maintain quality of the exhibit. Awards may be reduced or withheld on any exhibit not maintained in peak show quality for the duration of the Fair. Final decision concerning maintenance shall be with the Fair Management. 12. Division 510 indoor gardens and Divisions 512-545 will be shown in Redwood Hall where maintenance can be done on the schedule stated on the Department calendar. No maintenance will be permitted during Fair hours. 13. No exhibit is to be removed until official release time 2-7 p.m., Monday, June 20, 2016 without specific prior supervisor permission. No part of the exhibit is to be removed while it is on display. 14. Fair is not responsible for loss or damage to plant or other materials used. AWARDS: Awards offered are per class, except as noted per division, sweepstakes, or special awards. Honorable mention ribbons will be given in classes where warranted. 91 GARDEN LANDSCAPE

JUDGING STANDARDS Gardens shall be judged on a point system indicated below. Award placement shall be based on the following percentages of the total points available. At the discretion of Fair Management, exhibitors who have received scores below 65% for one or more years may not be invited to participate the following year. These additional awards will be based on merit with all gardens in Division 510 judged together. If judges determine that no garden meets a reasonable standard for some or all of the categories, those prizes will not be awarded. The exhibitor will create an attractive garden in an 8 x10 indoor space on concrete floor, either against a wall/drape or free-standing with actual paving or groundcover or a painted floorcloth, and suitable fencing, or backdrop (e.g. fabric or wooden) when located against the wall or with edging when in-the-round. Plants may be shown in decorative containers or integrated within bounded groupings to simulate planted beds. As the area used is relatively small, plants must be massed for best visual appeal, rather than the spacing for future growth used when planting an actual garden. Contact supervisor to verify specifics of location. Maximum of 8. One double size location is available outdoors on grass, with previous permission. Garden Party An attractive garden setting with some extra embellishment for a celebration 3. Hobby Garden Showing evidence of a garden related hobby or activity 4. Living Green Garden An attractive space incorporating the latest in innovative, environmentally nurturing approaches to gardening, perhaps including solar, companion planting and/or conservation of soil & water 5. Lunch in the Garden A garden setting designed for informal dining 6. Personal Interest Garden A garden meant to satisfy the special interest or pastime of the designer/gardener, whether it be topiary, attracting butterflies or the look of another time or place 7. Plant Lover's Garden A garden showcasing a particular plant, family or type, styled as a gardener especially interested in that kind of plant would design for his own garden. 8. Pollinator Garden Using plants that attract bees, butterflies & other pollinators 9. Relaxing Haven An attractive, low maintenance space to enjoy after work 10. Shade Garden Shade-loving plants used in an attractive, integrated design 11. Specialty Garden Focusing special attention on your choice of one type of plant i.e. roses, orchids, fuchsias etc. and their coordination with other plantings in this garden DIVISION 512 FOCUS GARDEN Create an attractive, free-standing garden space in Redwood building showcasing your own exhibitor-made feature(s) (birdbath, fountain, steppingstones, planter, etc.). The 6 x6 space must contain sufficient grouped containerized plants to represent a planted bed or coordinated containers to form a well-designed small garden space. Limit of 6. 1. Focus Garden with Exhibitor-made Feature IN OUR COMMUNITY INFORMATION & RULES: 1. Judging will be based on design and workmanship of the display, as well as evaluation of the actual project as shown by materials displayed. A minimum square footage of visual display is required, including vertical 60 square feet in Div 520,530 & 540 and 25 square feet in Div 435 & 545. (e.g. elements on table surface with 3 tall display behind) 2. Department rules 5-8 do not apply to these divisions. Backgrounds, stands, trellising, etc. are the responsibility of the exhibitor. Deceptive artificial plant material (e.g. silk flowers) is not allowed, although exhibitor created representational plant forms may be used. DIVISION 520 RESTORATION OF OUR COUNTY S NATURAL LANDSCAPE A display consisting of information including maps, photos, graphs and appropriate sample plant material showing the restoration/preservation of a public space in San Mateo County, largely or at least partly through volunteer effort highlighting progress during the preceding year. An area of 20 sq ft (approx. 4-5 ft per side) will be reserved for this freestanding floor display. Please contact Department Coordinator for site specifics. Exhibitor entered should be the volunteer group involved, though help in preparing the exhibit may come from other sources. Examples: restoration of native plant, wildflower meadow or stream habitat. DIVISION 530 COMMUNITY LANDSCAPE BEAUTIFICATION An attractive display documenting an area improved or re-designed/renovated with plantings, in the previous year, as a philanthropic project in cooperation with a community organization or public agency. Photos of the completed project should be supplemented with site design, examples of materials used and signage providing information on location, previous condition, vision or intention and special considerations. This exhibit should show the record of change in a park or garden space in San Mateo County, not a re-creation of the garden itself, although a coordinated sample of materials used should be included to enhance the display. State your choice of a 4 x4 floor space or 8 table on the entry form or contact the Department Coordinator to verify specific placement requirements. 1 st Place $400 2 nd Place $350 3 rd Place $300 1. Community Beautification Display DIVISION 535 - COMMUNITY BEAUTIFICATION BY YOUTH An exhibit documenting a philanthropic project by a youth group to improve or re-design a public/community area with plantings in the previous year. Information on the project should include before & after photos, conditions, site design, examples of materials used and special considerations in an attractive display. It should show the record of change in a community park or garden space in San Mateo County by youth volunteers, not a re-creation of the garden itself, although a coordinated sample of materials used should be included to enhance the display. An area 2½ x 4 feet square on table or similar size free-standing on floor (as requested) will be reserved for each entry. Limit of three entries. 1 st Place $250 2 nd Place $200 3 rd Place $150 1. Youth Community Beautification DIVISION 540 SCHOOL GARDEN LANDSCAPE PLANTING An attractive display documenting an area improved/re-designed/renovated with plantings in the previous year with students at a school site. Photos of the completed project should be supplemented with site design, examples of materials used and signage providing information on location, previous condition, vision or intention and special considerations. It should also include original age of the garden and ages and participation of the student gardeners. This is a small exhibit showing the record of change, not a re-creation of the garden itself, although a coordinated sample of materials used should be included. An 8 table or 4 x4 floor space (as requested) will be provided in which the required visual space must be utilized for display. Department Coordinator must be contacted to verify specific placement requirements. DIVISION 545 EDUCATIONAL USAGE OF SCHOOL GARDENS Mount an attractive, self-standing, informative display including plot plan, photos, plant lists and student inputs. A foldable cardboard unit such as is used for science fair projects (tri-fold 36" x 48") or self-made apparatus of the same approximate size could be used. Additional materials should be included. Exhibit must include student usage & how it was related to the curriculum. Total table space available per exhibit is approximately 24 x 48. While the garden may be shared by students from all grades, the usage demonstrated should focus on one age group. Student input in preparing the exhibit is expected. Judges will make a visit to the actual school garden within three weeks before Fair opening. Eligibility: Exhibitors are responsible for obtaining entry form(s) & rules from the Fair, and submitting form(s) and any required fees by the closing date as specified by Fair Management. The closing date for all entry forms (Non-livestock) is May 10, 2016. Fair Management encourages Exhibitors to enter online and not wait until the deadline. It is the Exhibitors responsibility to receive confirmation of entries submitted to the Fair. Entry forms not received by the Fair by midnight May 10, 2016, will not be accepted unless submitted as a Late Entry and submitted via mail or drop-off only, and accompanied by an additional late entry fee of $100.00.
