3 RULES We Need You to Read... CUT FLOWER 1. Read Competition Guidelines: Changes are made each year. 2. Open to all California residents, Adults (ages 19 and older) and Youth (ages 6-18). Youth must turn 6 on or before July 15, 2016 and cannot turn 19 on or before July 15, See registration and competition dates on page 1 of this guide. No reminder cards will be sent. 4. The OC Fair reserves the right to refuse any entry that has a serious disease or insect problem. 5. Entries incorrectly entered/identified will be disqualified. 6. Cut flower entries will be discarded at the end of the competition and cannot be picked up. 7. Only one stem per vase. 8. Wedges may be used to support flowers, but must be placed below the lip of the vase. 9. Competitors will not be permitted to use their own vases. 10. The OC Fair is not responsible for lost, damaged or dead items. 11. See specific competitions for detailed rules and criteria. l 3

4 HOW TO ENTER for the Cut Flower Competition... Who May Enter: Open to all California residents, ages 19 and older and Youth (ages 6-18). Processing Fees: None - It s free to enter this competition. Entry Limit: Rose Divisions: Rose: Known Cultivar will not be limited to one entry per class - it will be limited to one entry per rose cultivar. (i.e. Although Celebrity and St. Patrick are both yellow Hybrid Tea Roses, entering both roses is permitted because they are distinct cultivars cultivar name is required). Dahlia Bloom Divisions: is not be limited to one entry per class. All Other Competitions: Maximum of 1 entry per class per competition date. If multiple entries are submitted by an individual within the same class entries will be disqualified. 1. Choose from among the divisions and classes listed. 2. Go to ocgard.fairmanager.com and register online before the deadline. 3. All entries are limited to home-grown flowers. 4. Entries must be made under the name of the individual who prepared it. Do not use business or fictitious names. There are no team entries. Please enter using exhibitors name as it will appear on the display tag. 5. You will receive an notification and confirmation immediately after online entry is received. Please check your Spam/Junk folder first before contacting the OC Fair. 4

HOW TO DELIVER Your Entry to the Fair... Where to Delivery Entries Bring your entry(s) to Centennial Farm on the listed competition date(s). Enter Gate 1 off Fair Drive. Check in is 7-9:30 am. Exhibitors must check in by 9:30 am without exceptions. TICKETS, YEA! Free OC Fair Admission Exhibitors will receive one (1) 2016 OC Fair admission ticket per competition date. One (1) ticket per exhibitor, not one per entry. Exhibitor must be present to receive ticket. Claim checks will only be redeemable for an admission ticket during the hours of competition delivery. Tickets are valid any day the Fair is open. 5

6 HOW IS MY ENTRY JUDGED? Adult Divisions Adult (19 and older) Divisions: Placed using the American Judging System ranking exhibits one against another (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention, Division Winner, and Best of Show). Youth Divisions Youth (ages 6-18) Divisions: Placed using the Danish Judging System. Each entry is scored on how well it meets a standard not how it compares to other entries. Entries are judged Blue (superior), Red (very good) or White (average) Award. Youth Largest Item is placed using the American Judging System ranking exhibits one against another (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Honorable Mention). Judging Judging is not open to the public. Judges decisions are final. Judges have the authority to disqualify any entry that does not meet the requirements specified. Judges are not obligated to award a place unless an entry merits a place. Judges Qualified judges are selected by the Program Coordinator and are selected from local professionals who are the top in their field. Judges may judge different divisions from year to year. Judging Criteria Type and Size (25%) -- True to type for the variety or group Uniformity (20%) -- Specimens are uniform in size, color, shape, type, maturity Condition (30%) -- Well-grown, good color and shape, clean, trimmed, free from blemishes Market Quality (25%) -- Prime edible maturity, firm, tender, crisp, and fresh Criteria Awards Points Form 25% Best of Show Color 20% Division Winner Substance 15% 1 st /Blue 5 points each Stem & Foliage 20% 2 nd /Red 3 points each Balance & Proportion 10% 3 rd / White 1 points each Size 10% Honorable Mention No Premiums Offered Sweepstakes Adult and Youth Sweepstakes in Cut Flower will be tallied based on the accumulated points (see above) for all 5 judging days. 7 WHAT IF I GET AN AWARD? Judging Results Results can be viewed online at ocfair.com/results. We post results online as soon as possible. Please do not call or for competition results. RIBBONS, YEA! Ribbons may be picked up on the following Competition Dates listed on page 1 and on Final Pickup Day on Monday August 15, 7 am-noon. Ribbons and premiums will only be mailed to exhibitors who mailed-in their entries. THE CHECK S IN THE MAIL Sweepstakes Award Checks/Premiums Will be made payable to the exhibitor whose name is indicated on the entry form and mailed within 30 days after the close of the 2016 OC Fair. Signed judging sheets will be used as evidence for payment of premiums. Ribbons and tags will not be accepted. 7

(i.e. Celebrity and St. Patrick are both Yellow Hybrid Tea Roses, entering both under 02 Hybrid Tea/ Grandiflora is permissible as they are each a distinct cultivar). Rose: Unknown Cultivar is limited to one entry per class. Open to novice competitors only. All entries should conform to either a Single Bloom (single bloom, no side buds) or Spray (bloom count is greater than bud count). Available all 5 competition dates. How do I determine the name of my rose? The first step in determining the identity of a mystery rose is to check for a tag or other label at the base of the plant. If none exists, take a sample to a local rose expert. Many roses may never be identified that s why we created the Unknown Cultivar Division. Competitors will not be limited to number of entries permitted. Multi-colored flowers are to be classified by dominant color only. Remove all foliage. Judging Criteria Color (25%) - Faults: dull, faded, or burned Form (35%) - Faults: gaps, lopsided, green center, open center, flat, immature Substance (20%) - Faults: flowers soft, lack springiness, droopy, failing, falling, shriveled Stem (10%) - Faults: crooked, too short, too long, too thick, weak, wiry 11

16 OC FAIR GUIDELINES ONLINE ENTRY Dates to Remember Please check the individual Competition Guides for entry deadlines, as well as dates and times for entry delivery and pickup. Dates and times are absolute. Late entries will not be accepted. Who May Enter Some divisions are open only to Orange County residents and some limit the number of entries and age of entrants. Check individual Competition Guides for who may enter each competition. Youth must enter the divisions and classes specified for their age group. The exhibitor s age as of July 15, 2016, determines their age group. Youth may not enter in the Adult divisions. Open Youth who turn age 19 by July 15, 2016, are considered adults. 4-H youth members in good standing may be age 19 as outlined by the 4-H Cooperative Extension Office. 4-H members who are age 19 may choose to enter as either a 4-H Young Adult or Adult - they may not enter both. This rule applies for all OC Fair 4-H Competitions. Enter Online Enter online at ocfair.fairmanager.com. Incorrect or incomplete information on online entry may disqualify the exhibit or cause delay in issuing awards. Online submission of data requires that you understand that the decision of the judge is final. You agree to abide by all rules and regulations contained in the OC Fair Competition Guides and understand that such rules and regulations are incorporated with and become a part of this agreement. You hereby release the OC Fair and the State of California from all liability of every kind and character on account of loss, damages or injury to property, which may occur on the fairgrounds. By submitting artwork I herby Grant the OC Fair & Event Center the right to reproduce accepted artwork for promotional and educational uses in both printed and electronic forms. Processing Fees OC Fair July 15-August 14 Most divisions require processing fees (check individual Competition Guides.) Fees are payable online with a credit card. No refunds will be issued. 16

17 OC FAIR GUIDELINES ENTRIES AND EXHIBITS Acceptable Entries No entries or works with copyright or licensing infringement will be accepted. If there is any reproduction of a registered trademark item or work of another artist, the OC Fair reserves the right to disqualify the entry. The OC Fair is a family-oriented event. Any entry deemed inappropriate for family viewing will be disqualified prior to judging. Articles which are objectionable, stained, soiled, broken, or not ready for hanging will not be accepted for judging and will not be displayed. You will be notified for pickup. OC Fair reserves the right to refuse, accept conditionally or to cancel any entry, disqualify exhibitors, prohibit exhibition of entries or to cancel awards, without claim for damages. OC Fair will not be liable for entries made in error and will not re-open judging to accommodate such entries. Repeat Entries No items entered in a previous year s OC Fair competition will be accepted. Exhibit Sales Sale of an exhibit or any part of an exhibit for delivery during the OC Fair will not be permitted. Entry Limit The Exhibit Supervisor and/or Program Coordinator have the right to limit entries to facilities available. Entry forms will be dated as received and entry forms received first will have priority. All entries will be accepted unless the exhibitor is otherwise notified. Protection of Exhibits All cases will be locked and will not be opened while the public is in the building. Exhibits will not be allowed to leave the OC Fair & Event Center grounds unless the Program Coordinator has approved a release slip. Reasonable precaution will be taken in protection of exhibits. The exhibitor must arrange for insurance if desired. OC Fair will not be responsible for accidents or loss that may occur to any of the exhibitors or exhibits at the show and the exhibitors shall hold the management harmless and indemnify it against any legal proceedings arising from such accident or loss. Presentation of entry form shall be deemed acceptance of this rule. OC Fair July 15-August 14 17

18 OC FAIR GUIDELINES JUDGING AND AWARDS Judges and Judging Procedures For judging purposes, the OC Fair reserves the right to combine classes or divisions to create an adequate judging pool where numbers are insufficient to ensure adequate competition. Qualified judge(s) will be selected by the Program Coordinator to judge all exhibits. Judges have the authority to disqualify or transfer to the correct class any exhibit that does not meet the requirement of the division or class in which it is entered. Adult Divisions are placed using the American Judging System (ranking exhibits one against another). 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place and Honorable Mention may be awarded in each class if judges so determine. Young Adults and Junior Divisions are placed using the Danish Judging System where each entry is judged on how well it meets a standard rather than how it compares to other entries. Entries are judged Blue (superior), Red (very good) or White (average) Award. There may be more than one Blue, Red or White Award per class. All Blue Awards will compete, using the American Judging System, for cash awards. The decision of the jurors is final. If an entry is disqualified after judging is completed, the judge will not change the status of awards given for other entries. Judging is NOT open to the public (except Special Contests). Judging results can be viewed online around the third week of the OC Fair at ocfair.com/results. Please do not call or for competition results. Award information will not be given by telephone. Premiums Signed judging sheets will be used as evidence for payment of premiums, ribbons and tags will not be accepted as evidence for payment. Checks for awards will be made payable to the exhibitor whose name is indicated on the entry form and distributed within 30 days after the close of the OC Fair. Ribbons To encourage high standards, the judge shall award 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place in each class according to merit; if without merit, the judge shall make no award under any circumstances. Ribbons and special awards must be picked-up by exhibitors at the close of the OC Fair unless otherwise noted. OC Fair July 15-August Claiming Awards and Exhibits Exhibits and/or awards left after the official release date are not the responsibility of the OC Fair and will be discarded without exception. If you are unable to pick up your items, please arrange for someone to pick them up for you. Claim check or photo ID is required for pickup. No additional phone calls or notifications will be made.
