BUILDING INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE FOR MINISTERS (BICM) TRAINING WORKSHOP Hello and welcome! Congratulations on taking a step to bring Intercultural Competence to your arch/diocese or catholic organization. The goal of the Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Church is that ministry leaders who attend these trainings increase their capacity to welcome, receive, and encourage all emerging cultural groups to assume their role of leadership in the Church and, in turn, to train other ministry leaders to do the same. This formation program aims to prepare ministry leaders to: Articulate the general outlines of a theology and spirituality of ministry in intercultural settings, including the manner in which the Magisterium understands the concepts of evangelization, the New Evangelization, and inculturation. Increase the awareness regarding how to communicate appropriately with persons and groups in cultures other than one's own. Increase the awareness regarding how to communicate effectively with persons and groups in cultures other than one's own. Gain the ability to identify and articulate patterns of prejudice that impede intergroup interaction. Provide a rationale for the inclusion and integration of diverse cultural groups into the life and mission of the parish and diocese. Teach the content of the five modules with confidence. The Training of Trainers Workshop provides an opportunity for ministers to attain a foundational first level of competence in intercultural relations and communication. It is also designed to orient trainers to methodology, strategies, and activities suited to teach the content of the program.

SUGGESTED PARTICIPANTS The training is for all ministers and persons in Church leadership positions. This includes bishops, priest, deacons, religious men and women, and lay ministers. Participants from the following diocesan offices are critical to forming a diocesan intercultural competency formation team: Education, Catechesis and Religious Education, Clergy and Parish Life, Vocations, Social Ministry, including Catholic Charities, Multicultural/Ethnic/ Racial Ministries, People on the Move Ministries, Liturgy and Worship, Higher Education, and Seminary. INFORMATION ABOUT THE TRAINING The training will be held at the Cardinal s Great Hall at St. Paul Seminary in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The address is 2900 Noblestown Road, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15205. SCHEDULE * The schedule is subject to change before and during the training. Day 1 - Friday, May 15 General Overview of the five Modules Open to the public; required of all Train the Trainers Day 2 Saturday, May 16 A quiz of the overview, individual and group work, preparing to teach BICM, using a syllabus, establishing and understanding goals, lesson plans and handouts, presenting BICM to adult learners, which uses methods and a variety of ways of learning using technology, and group work on modules. Train the Trainers (TT) Workshop: Participants must attend the Friday through Sunday sessions. Space is limited. Friday s Overview is open to anyone who is interested in understanding of the benefits of building intercultural competency. Day 3 Sunday, May 17 Presentation/analysis of the modules and creation of an action plan.
