1 Authorization for Lay Ecclesial Ministry The U.S. Bishops 2005 statement on lay ecclesial ministry, Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord, defines lay ecclesial ministers as: Those men and women whose ecclesial service is characterized by Authorization of the hierarchy to serve publicly in the local church Leadership in a particular area of ministry Close mutual collaboration with the pastoral ministry of bishops, priests, and deacons Preparation and formation appropriate to the level of responsibilities that are assigned to them. (p. 10) The purpose of this study is to further our understanding of how the AUTHORIZATION process for lay ecclesial ministry is implemented in arch/dioceses in the United States. The study focuses on the authorization relationship between the hierarchy and the lay ecclesial minister in the parish lay ecclesial ministry positions at the diocesan level are not addressed by this study. Co-Workers defines authorization for lay ecclesial ministry as the process by which properly prepared lay men and women are given responsibilities for lay ecclesial ministry by competent Church authority.
