1 Northern Illinois Center for Nonprofit Excellence Faith-based Leadership Certificate Program

2 Faith-based Leadership Certificate Program Faith-based organizations have additional challenges compared to other nonprofit organizations. Managing a predominately volunteer staff, maintaining large facilities, drafting meaningful services, and offering around the clock spiritual support is taxing when compounded by the general operating challenges of cash flow, marketing, fundraising, planning, and staff leadership. The Faith-based Leadership Certificate program will equip you with the information and skills necessary to manage your place of worship or faithbased service organization. WHO SHOULD ATTEND This program is a non-denominational offering designed for faith-based leaders and laity interested in building their management and leadership skills. Those who would benefit most from this program include: pastors, priests, imams, ministers, rabbis, and other faith-based leaders management level employees within faith-based organizations council/board members and other faith-based volunteers PROGRAM OBJECTIVES The Faith-based Leadership Certificate Program will build management capacity through content in the following areas: Managing and leading change Stewardship and giving Volunteer management Personal leadership development Conflict resolution Self-care Strategic thinking and planning Human resource management Marketing Use of technology Collaboration Financial management Safety and transparency Asset management PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS & EVALUATION Participants can elect to take a course or the certificate program (five courses). Participants may be given reading materials or assignments before the first meeting of each course and will be asked to use specific examples from their organization as the basis for weekly assignments and discussions. Courses are offered as four 2.5-hour sessions. Participants successfully completing all five courses will receive a certificate in faith-based leadership from Rockford College. Certificate eligibility requires 90% overall attendance.

3 Course descriptions Leading Change in Changing Times. Change must occur for an organization to be healthy and relevant, but how do we react to change and remain relevant in a postdenominational, millennial world? How do we change our leadership styles as the organization changes? What is the role of clergy in change? This course will focus on the elements and tools to effectively lead a congregation through change. Special emphasis will be placed on supportive leadership models, handling conflict with grace, cultivating a non-anxious presence, diligent focus on mission and core values, change styles, and balancing the concern for others with the concern for one s own well-being. Tues., Sept. 4, 11, 18, 25, 2012; 1:30 4:00 p.m.; Instructor: Pastor Janet Hunt Joining Mission and Message. What is the public face of your faith-based organization in the larger community? What role does marketing play? How can you better use new technologies and relevant language to reach members and prospective members? This course will explore marketing concepts that offer an inviting message to the community and appeal to the non-attending people who want to be entertained. It will provide practical insights on using tools such as websites, blogs, Facebook, etc., to create a message that will resonate with and welcome people outside of your current membership. Tues., Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23, 2012; 1:30 4:00 p.m.; Instructor: Ann H. Stites Money Matters: Financial management for effective service. How do you ensure the necessary resources to meet the mission of your faith-based organization? This course will explore tools to enhance your congregation s stewardship and giving, the components of a capital campaign, and good checks and balances to maintain transparency and safety. Accounting practices for congregations will be explored, and ethical and legal/tax issues will be covered. Tues., Oct. 30, Nov. 6, 13, 20, 2012; 1:30 4:00 p.m.; Instructor: Molly Lovelock Managing Our Most Valuable Assets: Staff and volunteers. People whether they are employees or volunteers are the life-force of any faith-based organization. This course will provide tools for developing positive work relationships, recruiting/hiring and evaluating and coaching performance of paid staff, additionally discussion will include the applicability of state and federal statutes. Special emphasis will be placed on recognizing volunteer management as a process which includes identifying the needs of the organization, matching those needs through recruitment, orienting and training, motivating, evaluating and recognizing the efforts of volunteers. Tues., Feb. 5, 12, 19, 26, 2013; 1:30 4:00 p.m.; Instructor: Sue Buckwalter Facilities Management Beyond buildings and grounds. Facilities are the sacred, but often underfunded, spaces of any faith-based organization. Focus will be given to management and preventative maintenance of buildings, cemeteries/sacred grounds, parking lots, etc. Other issues to be addressed include safety and security, information technology, audio visual, food service, scheduling/rental and risk management. This course will draw on the experience of a panel of area faith-based facilities managers. Tues., March 5, 12, 19, 26, 2013; 1:30 4:00 p.m.; Instructor: Sharon Beu Northern Illinois Center for Nonprofit Excellence, Rockford College
