This is Facebook! 5 Part 1 This is Facebook! 1.1 How do we communicate in the modern world? How do you communicate with your family, friends, classmates or the people you work with when you are not face to face with them? There was a time not so long ago when people used to pick up a telephone, push a number, and talk to one another. However, if you wanted to call someone long distance, this would be very expensive. There was also a time when people used to find some paper, write a letter, put a stamp and address on the front, and mail it. However, it would take between two to five days for the
6 This Is Facebook! letter to arrive at the person s house. It would then take another two to five days to receive a reply from that person. Now, thanks to new technology, the Internet, and Social Networking Sites (SNS), it is very easy to keep in contact with the people we know. The world s most popular SNS is Facebook. There are over 1,000,000,000 users covering nearly all of the countries in the world (Vance, 2012). In fact, there are very few countries where people do not use Facebook or where it is not allowed. Facebook has become an important part of most of our lives with people checking their Facebook page regularly throughout each and every day. 1.2 What is Facebook and why do people use it? Facebook is an online website. Once you register with Facebook, you can start to add the personal
This is Facebook! 7 information you wish other people to see about you. This might be your name, where you live, your birthday, your work or school information, and the things you like to do. You can then add your friends, family, classmates, or work friends to build your very own personal friends list and start sending messages to everyone easily. You can also chat with your friends live when you and they are both online. You can share photographs and videos with your friends. Moreover, you can comment on what your friends upload to their Facebook page. For example, I posted the question to my Facebook friends What is Facebook? They commented: A place to share thoughts, pictures, jokes, comments, and questions. (Cory) Sometimes, a waste of time but a good place to keep in touch with people. (Catherine) It is a place to find old friends. (Kenta)
8 This Is Facebook! A place where you can talk and listen. (Jon) A place to exchange ideas, thoughts, how you feel, and events. (Peter) A place where you can tell something you want people to know. (Satoru) A chance to share important and not so important information with everyone. (David) A way to connect with international people. I am a member of an online singing group. We have never met face to face. (CA) 1.3 When did you start using Facebook? I became a Facebook user in October 2007. I had received many emails from people inviting me to join. Finally, I decided to accept. After joining, the first message I received was from a good friend who had left Japan and returned to the UK the year earlier. She wrote:
This is Facebook! 9 Andy! So good to see you here on Facebook! I ve been terrible at keeping in touch, sorry! How s life? Are you coming back to the UK for a visit soon? (Vicki) Since October 2007, I have used Facebook every day and it has helped me keep in touch with family, friends, and students (Yes, I am a teacher!). Facebook has also helped me connect with people in my life I thought I would never see again! I am now Facebook friends with people I knew at elementary school, junior high school, high school, and university. I am also Facebook friends with people I used to work with in the UK. The biggest surprise was finding my old friend who moved from the UK to South Africa when I was six years old. He added me as a friend on Facebook and I was so happy to be back in touch with him after all these years.
10 This Is Facebook! 1.4 What is this book about? This book tells the story of Facebook and how it grew to be the global number one SNS. It also explains how you can use Facebook from setting up your own profile page, communicating on the News Feed, to forming your own chat group.
