HIGH VOLTAGE COURSES HISTORY In order to meet new regulations given by the Norwegian Maritime Directorate ( NMD) = ( SD ), Tønsberg Maritime Videregående Skole (TMVS), now named Færder videregående skole (FVGS) initiated in 1983, High Voltage courses specifically designed for Norwegian electricians working on vessels and oilrigs. Through the years more than 1000 Norwegian electricians have passed our courses. The following is an extract of current Regulations from Norwegian Maritime Directorate regarding general qualifications requirements and mandatory certificates of competency on board Norwegian Vessels concerning qualifications for ship electricians laid down by Regulation of 29 April 1998 serie F 3/98 14 nr.7. High Voltage electricians. On board installations from 1000 VAC or 1500 V DC the responsible electrician ( safety manager) need High Voltage Certificate or documentation of High Voltage competency. 7.1 - - must obtain 3 months practical training in operation and maintenance of the High Voltage installation on board Norwegian Ships, Drilling Vessels or other Mobile Offshore Units, together with accepted High Voltage course. - - In 1999 our first course in English was tailored for American chief engineers employed in the American shipping company, Arco. Due to an increasing number of High Voltage installations on board ships we have been asked from various shipping companies to arrange international courses in English for electricians and chief engineers. In the year 2000 several courses were arranged both in Norwegian and English. Current courses on offer are listed below. THE COURSES H-01 Ten days (100 hrs) training for Norwegian electricians according to the regulations above. This is an SD (Norwegian Maritime directorate) certified HV course for Safety Manager with 3 months additional training on board a HV installed ship. H-02 Five days (40 hrs) course for engineers and electricians. This course will give knowledge and understanding of maritime HV installations and safety working procedures. Courses in English will be arranged on request. Special courses can be designed for your requirements/needs. Yearly 1-2 days refreshing courses in safety for High Voltage/Low Voltage (FSE) can be arranged. Some of the courses are available in other locations on request.
HANDS ON SESSION After the theoretical part with rules, regulations and safety video, the participants will get a chance to practice in our laboratory. - safety measures related to work on-or close to earthed and short-circuited installations and - work on or close to High Voltage installations. The main switchboard 6,6 kv is supplied from a step up transformer 0,23 / 6,6 kv. The participants take part in end terminations and joints on PEX and offshore cables. The school has a training cabinet containing the new maintenance-free vacuum interrupter VM1 and a comprehensive main protecting device REM 543 for generators and lmotors from ABB. At NEFI High Voltage test laboratory Røed Skien the participants have a demonstration of an arc shorting Shortcurrent 8 ka Voltage 7,5 kv. (Only Course H-01)
