Treatment & Recovery Waste Solution Specialists INNOVATING SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH PIONEERING WASTE MANAGEMENT

CSG operates the largest hazardous waste treatment and recovery facility in the UK ABOUT CLEANSING SERVICE GROUP Nationwide hazardous waste treatment & recovery facility Recycling facility Waste transfer & recycling facility Treatment & recovery facilities CSG Treatment and Recovery is part of Cleansing Service Group (CSG). Today the company is a leading nationwide force within the waste management industry developing award winning pioneering techniques for the treatment, processing, recycling and recovery of waste streams by combining state-of-the-art plant and equipment; innovative approaches and know-how to solve difficult and tricky waste industry problems. The Group has 19 fully operational sites spread across the country. Since the company was formed in 1934, CSG has been raising industry standards for waste treatment recycling and recovery. This tradition is still followed strongly today by CSG Treatment and Recovery in its quest for environmentally sensitive and technically innovative sustainable solutions for waste management. For any of our services contact us today on FREEPHONE 0800 048 0622

Through a period of growth and diversification, CSG Treatment and Recovery continually develops new processes and environmental options to help customers to continue to operate strictly within the compliance limits of regulations currently in force. The company is able to offer the widest range of treatments available in the UK and can also deal effectively with the high volume of throughput necessary to service all users including the largest Blue Chip companies in the country. Operating to BS EN ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accreditations, CSG Treatment and Recovery collects or receives a fully comprehensive range of waste streams in line with the customer s Duty of Care responsibilities and all Environment Agency legal requirements necessary for safety purposes and environmental protection. With over seven decades of experience we take our environmental responsibility very seriously and many customers depend on us for reliability, responsible behaviour with an in depth knowledge of technical issues. This underpins our ethics of providing continual excellent performance. Using a consultative approach with a solid foundation in scientific research and expertise CSG Treatment and Recovery repeatedly finds innovative solutions to clients requirements that others within the industry may be unable to cater for or lack the technical expertise. Often based on recycling, specialist recovery or simple re-use, the solution proposed will usually not only answer the question posed but often lead to cost reductions. Providing expert technical support, giving urgent logistical help or attending dangerous incidents or spillages has meant CSG has built up an enviable track record with its customers. CSG Treatment and Recovery is looking forward to the future, continuing to challenge and keep answering the hard questions to build up more relationships based on mutual respect on which customers can rely. 3

TREATMENT OF AQUEOUS WASTES We were one of the pioneers for operating aqueous waste treatment plants in the UK and have gained second to none expertise as a result 4

CSG can tailor processing techniques for individual customer requirements and has a large tank storage capacity. Flexibility is characteristic of our approach and we happily accept wastes ranging from bulk tanker, drums, IBCs, bottles to small containers. Where practically possible CSG offsets one waste stream with another during the treatment or recovery process to help minimise any impact on the environment. Every year we recycle and recover large amounts of re-usable oil and other chemicals such as sulphuric acids and metal rich solutions ensuring environmental solutions for these aqueous wastes. Aqueous waste treatment processing includes: Neutralisation reactions for acids and alkalis Reduction reactions for chromic acid, metal complexes and other oxidising materials Oxidation reactions for cyanide and sulphites Flocculation reactions for sludges and suspensions Separation by filtration, centrifuge and gravity Separation of oil by gravity, centrifuge and thermal desorption 5

Our specialist team regularly provide bespoke solutions to help customers find answers for difficult wastes TREATMENT OF DIFFICULT WASTES CSG have developed several techniques for handling challenging and hazardous waste streams over a number of years. Many of these chemical wastes can cause problems for producers due to their chemical properties and handling difficulties, other wastes can cause problems due to sheer quantity or classification. Our engineered specialist processes are able to provide solutions for a wide range of difficult wastes. One difficult and hazardous waste stream is industrial concentrated strength (98%) sulphuric acid. At such high concentrations this acid can pose difficulties for producers. Under controlled conditions CSG are able to hydrolise the acid to a reduced concentration. The lower concentration acid is then recycled and used on site allowing a sustainable solution for the waste stream. Difficult waste treatments include: Hydrolysis of fuming acids (oleum, chlorosulphonic acid and acid solvents) Treatment of water reactive chemicals (titanium tetrachloride, antimony pentachloride, thionyl chloride, phosphorus oxychloride/trichloride and silicon tetrachloride) Reduction of strong oxidising agents (chromic acid, potassium permanganate and sodium hypochlorite) Blending of solvents for cemfuel Decontamination of drums with water reactive residues and other toxic chemicals 6

CSG pioneered the country s first enclosed mixing system for the stabilisation of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes in 1997 STABILISATION AND FIXATION For some problematic waste streams stabilisation and fixation present the best disposal options. Our highly developed processes enable waste to be blended together in an homogenous mix which meets waste acceptance criteria guidelines for landfill disposal. The treatment is far more advanced than traditional solidification methods as the science has been developed to fix the waste so that it s chemically bonded and therefore minimises the effect on landfill leachate liquids. The process is fully enclosed and automated ensuring any emissions are contained within the facility. This state of the art treatment facility accepts liquids, sludges, solid wastes and drums. Secure destruction can be guaranteed for confidential waste streams with a wide range of shredders available. Destruction will be witnessed and filmed on CCTV and certificates issued ensuring customer security. 7

LABORATORY AND SMALL PACKAGES Our trained technical staff will ensure correct classification, packing and safe transport Laboratory chemicals can pose a high risk to producers as even small quantities require special handling techniques. CSG offer a complete service for the disposal of small packaged items. CSG applies the same technologies and expertise to the treatment of small packages as for bulk or drum wastes as described: Recovery or re-use where possible Inorganic wastes, such as acids, alkalis & cyanides are processed using our aqueous treatment facility Liquid organic chemicals (solvents) are blended for recovery For chemicals with high hazards, such as water reactives or pesticides, high temperature incineration is arranged Recycling and recovery of paints, aerosols, oil filters and gas cylinders 8

RECOVERY OF PRECIOUS METALS CSG have developed unique and innovative processes for recovering precious metals from aqueous wastes including Nickel, Copper, Silver and Aluminium. This award winning process is a UK first for the recovery of Nickel from spent electroless solutions which contain high levels of organics and salts and are notoriously difficult to recover by electrolysis alone. These waste streams are traditionally produced by the nickel plating and aerospace industries. CSG currently extracts silver for recovery from used photographic fixer and x-ray solutions and has the expertise to cater for many other industrial aqueous wastes requirements including copper and aluminium solutions to name just a few. Recovery of these metals leads to recycling and reuse, therefore creating a more sustainable solution. This process is achieved by a complex method of ion exchange and electrowinning technology and consistently provides high extraction rates of 99.6%. 9

CSG are the only UK organisation to develop such a process permitted by the Environment Agency meeting strict Environmental Permit Regulations (EPR) TANALISED TIMBER PROCESSING An award winning, highly innovative and unique service has been developed by CSG to treat and process tanalised timber which until recently had inadequate disposal options. Originating from a wide range of sources such as cooling towers to garden sheds this waste stream has posed a problem for the industry due to the preservative (chromated copper arsenate) which bonds to the wood and is difficult to remove. This innovative process ensures: Diversion of waste from landfill No incineration and therefore no risk of harmful emissions Wood becomes classified as non-hazardous Hazardous residues (Cu, Cr, As) insolubilised to meet WAC The developed process extracts hazardous components (copper, chrome and arsenic) leaving a clean wood ripe for composting. 10

HAZARDOUS LAUNDRY SERVICE CSG offer a specialised laundry service for rags, wipes, absorbent pads, packaging, spill booms and spill mats that are contaminated with oils, paints, inks and solvents. Historically this waste stream could go to hazardous landfill sites however, under current Environmental Agency guidelines this is now illegal. Our developed process involves cleaning the wipes under optimum washing conditions so that they can be returned to our clients if required. On site containers are offered to many of our customers helping to ensure safe storage and transportation of these wipes. Our developed process ensures: Reuse of rags Recovery of oil & solvent Recycling of packaging 11

Our first local Treatment and Recovery Facility was opened back in 1969 TREATMENT & RECOVERY FACILITIES 12

CSG Treatment and Recovery has a national network of facilities spread across the country. Over the years CSG has built up a wealth of knowledge and expertise for operating these specialist centres. Our operatives are always eager to give assistance and advice when required and realise that the extensive range of waste environmental legislation can be difficult to understand and interpret. These facilities can process the following waste streams: Sludges, silts and sediments from gullies, interceptors, catchment pits, bund walls, soakaways or drains are run of the mill waste streams for our facilities. No matter how high the solids content we have the experience to process these waste streams. We have many clients who consider CSG as their premier disposal outlet for landfill leachate liquids, chalk waters, starchy solutions and petrol/storage tanks liquids. Diesel and kerosene in neat or contaminated mixtures can be processed and treated as well as oily water mixtures traditionally removed from interceptors.
