Thank you for your interest in UWC! SECTION A: Student /Parent information and conditions of application UWC schools, colleges and programmes deliver a challenging and transformative education experience to a diverse cross section of students, inspiring them to create a more peaceful and sustainable future. UWC has 13 schools and colleges across 5 continents all with distinctive characters but sharing the same mission, ethos and values. Although strong academic achievement is valued highly at UWC, academic achievements are put into perspective with a demanding mix of community engagement, international affairs, physical activities and creative pursuits. Our student intake is deliberately diverse and each of the schools and colleges draws together students from many different nations and backgrounds. Our bursaries, scholarships and fee structures aim to ensure a broad socio-economic mix within the student body that adds value to the student experience and the organisation. UWC depends on the dedication and expertise of a network of volunteers to promote UWC and select future students. These are called National Committees and they operate in more than 140 countries worldwide. Each year a National Committee will receive from the UWC schools and colleges a specific number of places (which may include a scholarship, bursary/partial scholarship or feepaying place) for which they select students to study the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. If a National Committee exists in your country you must apply through that committee. Please make sure you find out as much as possible about UWC before going ahead with your application. It is important that you understand the aims of the organization and the commitment involved in the programmes that are offered. For more information please go to www.uwc.org The UWC National Committee in The Bahamas consists of UWC Alumni and volunteers dedicated to providing as many Bahamian high-school students as possible with a transformational UWC education. Please contact us at: UWC Bahamas National Committee P.O. Box N-9902 Nassau, The Bahamas Website: bahamas-uwc.org Email: bahamasuwc@gmail.com or Mrs. Sandra Edgecombe (Secretary) Telephone: 242-302-5513 Fax: 1-242-302-5668

Selection Criteria Students are selected in open competition. To be eligible to apply you must meet the following criteria: Have successfully completed or expect to complete by June of the application year a minimum of 5 BGCSE's with a minimum 'B+' average or equivalent National Regional International academic examinations. Final official results must be presented to the National Committee for review. The National Committee reserves the right to revoke ANY selection, funding or scholarship assistance for reasons including, but not limited to, poor examination results that do not measure up to the application or the rigorous academic expectations of the United World College and the Bahamas UWC National Committee; Be involved in some form of community, sporting or extra curricular activity; Have strong transcript and reference letters from teachers, community leaders and/or counselors; Competitive standardised Test Scores (example: High SAT I scores). Equivalent standardised Test Scores (such as ACTs) are also acceptable; Additional high standardised Test Scores (such as SAT II or equivalent) are advantageous; Preferably be between 17 and 18 years of age; A sound knowledge of the English language is required. A working knowledge of English Literature is advantageous. Linguistic ability (in English as well as other foreign languages: Spanish, French, Italian, German, Mandarin, etc.) is advantageous. Successful applicants will have a genuine enthusiasm for the aims of the United World Colleges, such as the idea of understanding between peoples of widely differing cultures. An openness of mind is essential. Students need to approach new and unfamiliar experiences with enthusiasm, balance and good humour. They should be able to accept and enjoy customs and attitudes that are vastly different from their own. The United World Colleges and the Bahamas UWC Selection Committee look for students who are socially mature and morally responsible with outstanding social and community service. Beyond this, successful applicants have active and proven interests in the world in which we live. This could manifest itself in such interests as the arts, the environment, economics, politics, government, religion, and travel. Application Guidelines Your final application must include: completed application form (SECTIONS B & C) together with two applicant essays; two confidential references (SECTIONS D & E) including at least one from your high school; a transcript of your school report/academic results; copy of the first three pages of your valid, up to date Bahamian E-Passport, or your Bahamian Permanent Residency certificate. Please e-mail your application to bahamasuwc@gmail.com. Five hard copies of your application should also be sent to either one of the addresses below: The Research Group Limited Circle Palm Mall Soldier Road North P. O. Box N688 Tel. 242 394-3063 The deadline for applications is midnight, January 31 st, 2015

Selection process: Places in UWC are offered on a competitive basis. This application is carefully reviewed. From the initial list of applicants a short list is chosen for interviews. The National Committee may, at its discretion, use a combination of formal and informal interviews, in order to determine the final list of selected applicants. Finances: The UWC selection process in The Bahamas is based on merit, irrespective of a student s ability to pay; as such, the UWC Bahamian National Committee s most significant challenge is funding. The Bahamian National Committee relies on a combination of full and partial scholarships offered by United World Colleges, donations, parental contributions toward a student s costs, and fee paying placements. A full scholarship includes tuition and room and board. Extra costs not included in a full scholarship might include travel, health insurance, pocket money, project week expenses, visa processing costs, clothing and school supplies. It is important that parents who have the means to make a contribution toward a student s costs should do so, in order to make funding available to assist a student who cannot afford to pay. Parents will be therefore asked to provide information about employment, income range and any other information that they might consider relevant to the National Committee s assessment should their child be accepted as a candidate. Partial scholarships and fee-paying places are offered both on the basis of merit and parents ability to contribute toward a student s attendance. Financial agreements are confirmed on nomination Agreement is made between the parents and the school/college (or National Committee if applicable) Nomination process: Successful candidates are nominated to specific UWC schools and colleges. The schools and colleges generally accept the nominated candidates on the recommendation of the National Committee but reserve the right to make the final decision on every candidate. Please also note: An application is made to UWC and not to a particular school or college (although you may be asked to state your preference) Only one application can be made to UWC. You cannot apply through two different National Committees Applicants with disabilities who are self-sufficient in their everyday needs are encouraged to apply All information provided to the National Committee is held in the strictest confidence and is not shared with any third party. The National Committee maintains a data base of student and parental contact information for the purpose of disseminating important notices, invitations and alumni news.
