MGT410 Project Management Credit Hours: 3 Contact Hours: This is a 3-credit course, offered in accelerated format. This means that 16 weeks of material is covered in 8 weeks. The exact number of hours per week that you can expect to spend on each course will vary based upon the weekly coursework, as well as your study style and preferences. You should plan to spend 10-25 hours per week in each course reading material, interacting on the discussion boards, writing papers, completing projects, and doing research. Course Description and Outcomes This course is an introduction to project planning theory and process from a managerial perspective. The process aspect of project planning emphasizes the use of computer-based planning software such as Microsoft Project 2003/2007. The theory aspect of project management places an emphasis on tools, techniques and ideas that come from, and apply to projects in functional areas of large organizations such as finance, marketing, accounting, engineering, and production and operations management. This course is designed to help students develop hard knowledge and skills to work successfully in a project environment and to accomplish project and organizational objectives. Exploring project management concepts and techniques will assist the student in contributing to the solution of problems in their own work environments. Students will be challenged to think critically about project management nt principles and their application within the context of the real world. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Describe how project management can be used to achieve business goals. 2. Describe the basis/theory/function/purpose of project management and the basic project development lifecycle. 3. Evaluate the concepts of strategy and leadership in project situations. 4. Create and manage a project schedule. 5. Assess project management practices and be able to gauge their attributes for your own project management philosophy and style. 6. Evaluate team development activities that ensure quality and timely delivery of the project. 7. Develop competencies in earned value calculations for project performance. 8. Assess risk in terms of technical, safety, commercial and contractual considerations. 9. Evaluate the impact of changes to the schedule and/or scope of a project. 10. Establish a formal project plan for a project. Participation & Attendance

Assignment Details This course includes the following assignments/projects: Week 1 After completing the reading for Module 1, you should identify an appropriate project for the course and start the formal project plan due in Week 8. Also, you should begin to explore Microsoft Project functionality, using your course project as the input. Begin by developing a work breakdown structure. Week 2 Critical Thinking: Exercises (85 points) Complete the exercise below with the Critical Thinking rubric in mind. Go to an internet search engine (e.g. Google) and type in "project communication plan." Check three or four that have ".gov" as their source. How are they similar or dissimilar? What would be your conclusion concerning the importance of an internal communication plan? This is a good week to develop the project scope statement that will be part of the final paper. Keep working with MS Project and the work breakdown structure. Assign resources to tasks. Week 3 Work with MS Project to develop a network diagram and a project budget. Week 4 Critical Thinking: Exercises (90 points) Complete Exercises 8.1 & 8.6 as described HERE with the Critical Thinking rubric in mind. This is a good week to refine the project budget and develop your risk management plan & accompanying risk register that will be part of the final paper. Consider how you will present the information. MS Project Exercise (This is part of the grade for your final project) View/Network Diagram View/Reports and see what various reports are available

Week 5 Critical Thinking: Exercises (85 points) Complete Exercise 9.3 as described HERE with the Critical Thinking rubric in mind. This is a good week to refine the project budget and develop your risk management plan & accompanying risk register that will be part of the final paper. Consider how you will present the information. MS Project Exercise (This is part of the grade for your final project) Change the relationship between two linked tasks Add milestones to the project Week 6 This is a good week to review all of the elements of your final course paper. They are: Project scope Project schedule Project budget Project milestones & deliverables Quality management plan Staffing management plan Communication management plan Change management plan Risk management plan & accompanying risk register If you need help, this is a good week to contact your instructor. Week 7 Critical Thinking: Exercises (90 points) Complete Exercises 11.1 and 13.1, 13.2, 13.3 as described HERE with the Critical Thinking rubric in mind. This is a good week to finalize all of the elements of your final course paper. They are: Project scope Project schedule Project budget Project milestones & deliverables Quality management plan Staffing management plan Communication management plan Change management plan Risk management plan & accompanying risk register
