1 HSM300: Introduction to Human Services Credit Hours: 3 Contact Hours: This is a 3-credit course, offered in accelerated format. This means that 16 weeks of material is covered in 8 weeks. The exact number of hours per week that you can expect to spend on each course will vary based upon the weekly coursework, as well as your study style and preferences. You should plan to spend hours per week in each course reading material, interacting on the discussion boards, writing papers, completing projects, and doing research. Course Description and Outcomes Course Description: This course provides students with an overview of the human service field including major theoretical models of human service delivery and the roles and responsibilities of human service workers. Students will explore human service occupations, professional organizations, and community resources as well as ethical and legal issues. Course Overview: HSM300 provides a broad overview of the human services field, examining key polices implemented by the U.S. government over the last 100 years and highlighting the role played by recent political movements to shape the programs and services that are available to assist human services clientele. Central to an understanding of the human services field is a review of theories that aid human services workers in the provision of assistance and shape the development of various models of human service delivery. The course also examines non-profit organizations and the role played by charities and other agencies that serve the needs of human services clients. Ethical guidelines that impact the field as we know it will also be reviewed. Finally, the course examines how technological advances have shaped, and continue to shape, the field as we know it. HSM300 is an excellent introduction to the human services field as a whole and is recommended for those currently employed or seeking future work in the human services field. Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Identify and analyze the contributions to human services made by sociology, psychology, and anthropology. 2. Describe the impact of managed care on human service delivery and the human services professional. 3. Identify different types of diversity and describe the challenges presented by diversity issues in human services. 4. Describe the medical model and the public health model of human service delivery and explain why it is important for human serviced professionals to understand and use both models. 5. Apply Maslow s hierarchy of needs to client problems common in human services.

2 6. Compose a written statement of philosophy of helping that reflects commonly accepted human service values. 7. Describe and apply three strategies to counter resistance or reluctance. 8. Identify ways that the helper can continue to develop professionally, while avoiding encapsulation and burnout. 9. Summarize the influence of law, diversity, and technology on codes of ethics. Participation & Attendance Prompt and consistent attendance in your online courses is essential for your success at CSU-Global Campus. For each of these groups, write a summary and analysis of the services you find (approximately half devoted to each group). If your local community does not have services for these groups, expand your search to the nearest mid-size to major city and look for services there. Be sure to address the following items when summarizing and analyzing the results of your research: 1. Identify the service organizations you find by name and include the full website information. 2. Describe the types of services that each service organization provides to assist members from each group. 3. Explain which of Maslow s needs is addressed by each of the service organizations and describe how each need is met. 4. Evaluate whether or not adequate services for these groups are provided in your area. If not, assess the shortcomings. 5. Describe how services could be enhanced to better meet the needs of each group. 6. Describe how each service organization is funded. Discuss and cite the course textbook and at least one additional credible source to support your analysis and positions. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find this credible source. Portfolio Milestone: Portfolio Topic Description Submit a brief, one-paragraph description of your Portfolio Project topic.

4 Module 4 Module 5 Though you will not receive immediate points for this deliverable, it is a part of your Portfolio Project requirements and points will be deducted from your final project grade if the deliverable is not completed and submitted as assigned. Critical Thinking: Impact of Involuntary Services (100 points) Jane is a mental health counselor working with adults who have been arrested for domestic battery. She works in a program funded by a non-profit organization whose mission is to prevent domestic violence by teaching anger management skills. Isaiah, a 24-year old male, has been referred to her for anger management counseling after he was arrested for punching his girlfriend during an argument the previous week. According to the arrest report, Isaiah didn t think it was wrong to punch his girlfriend because, in his words, She made me mad. This is Isaiah s first arrest. He has been required by the State Attorney to attend eight weeks of counseling in exchange for deferring, and ultimately not filing, criminal charges. Isaiah is restrained from returning to the home of his girlfriend and he is currently sleeping on the sofa of a friend. Isaiah must leave his friend s home and find another place to stay in two weeks. Additionally, he missed two days of work following his arrest and subsequent incarceration and faces suspension from work and loss of pay for one week due to his unexcused absence. If Isaiah is charged with a criminal offense, he will lose his job. Isaiah has never had any counseling and was raised by his mother, who taught him that counseling was for crazy people. Write an essay that addresses the following items: 1. Describe Isaiah s physical, emotional and monetary needs. 2. Identify three challenges Jane will face while working with Isaiah. 3. What can Isaiah plausibly expect from Jane and the system? 4. Evaluate the likely successes and shortcomings of the services provided. 5. Describe the criteria you use to evaluate successful service delivery. 6. Describe one model or theory (i.e., Maslow s needs theory, situational, or developmental) that could help Jane offer support for Isaiah s problems and explain how Jane might apply the theoretical concept. Discuss and cite the course textbook and at least one additional credible source to support your analysis and positions. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find this credible source. Portfolio Milestone: Outline and Reference List (0 points) By 11:59 p.m. MT on Sunday of this week, submit an outline of your Portfolio Project and a reference list. Your reference list must contain at least three references (you may add additional references as you continue to develop your paper the final version of your Portfolio Project requires four sources, at least two of which are scholarly). The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find these scholarly references. This outline will serve as an organizational plan to help you draft your paper. An outline breaks down the parts of your thesis in a clear, hierarchical manner that reveals the overall structure and substance of your paper. Follow the basic outline format shown below. Your outline should include at least three Main Topics and at least one Important Subtopic per Main Topic. Try to list as many Details and Sub-details as you can. Title of Outline

Human Services Solutions for PTSD (100 Points) Military personnel who have experienced extreme physical and/or emotional trauma and the threat of injury or death, or who have witnessed the suffering associated with combat, often return to their home countries with various degrees of anxiety and/or mood disorders related to the trauma they have endured. Prepare a paper describing human services solutions to address post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) among military personnel. Be sure your paper addresses the following items: 1. Define PTSD. 2. Describe the components of treatment that are most essential to the management of PTSD symptoms. 3. Describe how reluctance or resistance might come into play when dealing with military personnel who are trauma survivors. 4. Describe medical and non-medical interventions that are useful for survivors of trauma such as PTSD. 5. Describe how helping professionals involved with trauma survivors can avoid burnout or vicarioustraumatization. Discuss and cite the course textbook and at least one additional credible source to support your analysis and positions. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find this credible source. Your paper should be 2-3 pages in length with document and citation formatting per CSU-Global guidelines for APA Style. Portfolio Project: Human Services Position: Field Research and Report (350 Points)

6 Conduct field research on a position (provide job title) within the human services sector in your geographic area. As part of your research, interview someone who holds the position currently or who works for a human services organization where the position exists. Write a paper about the position that addresses the following key items: 1. In what agency, company, and (if applicable) department does this position exist? 2. What is the position title? 3. What types of salaries and benefits are available to a person holding the position? 4. What are the essential functions of this position? 5. What types of ethical considerations arise on a regular basis for persons holding this position and on what bases are they addressed? 6. Would a person holding the position be likely to encounter client resistance or reluctance? If so, how is resistance addressed? 7. What types of diverse clientele does a person holding the position commonly encounter? 8. Does the position require continuing education and/or training? If so, what does this consist of? 9. How might one holding the position avoid burnout or compassion fatigue? 10. What types of technologies are used regularly to facilitate the position s success and what types of demands and challenges do technology and the requirement of technical competence make on a person holding the position? Make sure your paper includes a summary and analysis of research materials that are relevant to the assignment, e.g., scholarly journals, professional articles, legal documents, government documents, legal decisions, media clips, software, measurement instruments Web sites, personal communication, etc. This paper must include an introductory paragraph with a succinct thesis statement and a concluding paragraph that summarizes your major themes and restates your thesis in an expanded manner. Discuss and cite the course textbook and at least four additional credible sources to support your analysis and positions. At least two of these sources should be from professional/scholarly journals, which you can find in the CSU-Global Library. Your paper should be 8-10 pages in length with document and citation formatting per CSU- Global guidelines for APA Style.
