Report on the Completion of Study Abroad (for short-term program of 3 months or less) Report Date: 2015/08/05 Study abroad program name ASPIRE Forum 2015 Student Workshop Affiliation at Tokyo Tech Graduate School of Science Dept. of Condensed Matter Physics Year: M1 Name R.K Country of study abroad Hong Kong Overseas affiliation Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Period of study Period in the program: 2015/07/18 to 2015/07/24 Period spent overseas: 2015/07/18 to 2015/07/25 1 Description of study abroad destination I participated in the ASPIRE Forum and Student Workshop hosted by HKUST. On the first half of the program, students were given lectures on business, marketing, financing, and pitching techniques. On the last day of the workshop, each group gave a presentation on their ideas on sustainable energy along with business plans for selling the ideas. 2 Preparations before study abroad The Tokyo Tech students got together to prepare a power point to introduce what our school is like ( though we did not actually have the opportunity to give the presentation.) I did not need a visa and accommodation was provided by HKUST. 3 Impressions of activities during study abroad Since every Tokyo Tech student who participated in the program were put into different groups, the national backgrounds of the members constituting each group was diverse. Everyone in my group actively participated in the discussions. 4 An episode in which you noticed personal growth since you completed the study abroad First, I was able to gain more knowledge on business and startups. Not only that, but I now feel more comfortable holding discussions with people from diverse backgrounds.

5 Cost of study abroad Since the school paid for airline tickets, meals, and rooming, I only had to pay for transportation( mainly taxi and metro fares) and for insurance. 6 Living arrangements during the study abroad I stayed in the dorm of HKUST> 7 Language study during the study abroad Only English was used during the week the program was held. 8 How you want to utilize the experience(s) from now on I want to actively use the discussion skills I gained from the student discussions. 9 Any trouble or issues you faced abroad (if any) None 10 Any advice for students who wish to study abroad You should take any opportunity you can to study abroad because there are many things you can acquire other than language skills.

Report on the Completion of Study Abroad (for short-term program of 3 months or less) Report Date: 2015/08/03 Study abroad program name ASPIRE Forum 2015 Student Workshop Affiliation at Tokyo Tech Graduate School of Innovation Management Dept. of MOT Year: M1 Name Country of study abroad Overseas affiliation Period of study T.S HONG KONG, CHINA Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Period in the program: 2015 07 18 to 2015 07 24 Period spent overseas: 2015 07 18 to 2015 07 25 1 Description of study abroad destination ASPIRE Forum and Student workshop 2015 at Hong Kong university of Science and Technology. 2 Preparations before study abroad Prepared an introduction power point of Tokyo Institute of Technology together with other ASPIRE participants from this university including foreign student as well. It was good opportunity to know about the university more since information about university is one good topic to start talking with other university students. Also, since I had to work on group work with student from other foreign university in ASPIRE, it was nice exercise for that. 3 Impressions of activities during study abroad Discussion with other ASPIRE league students in English was quite impressive for me. 4 An episode in which you noticed personal growth since you completed the study abroad It was only a week program, so I do not feel my growth that much. But there is still a good finding. In discussion, to summarize each team member s opinions and get consensus is really hard especially when someone has a strong opinion. I tried to persuade the person who had different view of the problem from other teammate with logic but I failed. Because I found it is not about logic but feeling when people give way. This finding gave me some insight. I haven t got a solution for this but at least now I know the way I did doesn t work in this kind of case.

5 Cost of study abroad Generally 0 as Tokyo Tech provided everything except for some personal spending. 6 Living arrangements during the study abroad Student guest dormitory at HKUST. It was a double room. I had a Korean roommate. 7 Language study during the study abroad I took TOEIC test about a year before the program. And the score was around 950. It was not sufficient but was ok to discuss with nonnative English-speaking students. 8 How you want to utilize the experience(s) from now on In the future, I am sure that working with people all over the world will be common even for Japanese people. Through this program I learnt the difficulty of working with people who have different backgrounds. I could not exactly figure out how to handle the difference of thinking. But at least, in this one week, I noticed some reasons and came up with some solutions for the problem. So from now on, I am able to try these methods and that challenge would help me in the future. 9 Any trouble or issues you faced abroad (if any) None 10 Any advice for students who wish to study abroad Before going abroad, study your home country more. You are more ignorant of it than you think. Bring some small edible souvenirs. It would help you with making friends easier.

Report on the Completion of Study Abroad (For short-term program of 3 months or less) Report Date 2015/08/01 Study abroad program name ASPIRE Forum 2015 Student Workshop Affiliation at Tokyo Tech Name Country of study abroad Overseas affiliation Graduate School of Science & Engineering Dept. of International Development Engineering R.M HONG KONG Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Year: M2 Period of study Period in the program: 2015 07 18 to 2015 07 24 Period spent overseas: 2015 07 18 to 2015 07 24 1 Description of study abroad destination I joined ASPIRE Student s Forum 2015 which was held in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Clear water bay, Hongkong. 2 Preparations before study abroad I got initial information about this program from the notice board of our department building and later the details from a friend who participated in the same program in the year 2014. Instead of calling this a study abroad program I understood it as a student s workshop where students from five different universities come together every year to learn, discuss and share each other s knowledge and opinions on a particular topic selected for each year. Since it was a very short period of stay and only a workshop I did not work under any professor hence no such communication was required. However obtaining Hong Kong visa was very troublesome for me I received the visa just a day before my departure after requesting the Host University to look into the details of visa processing. The host university offered us their dormitory so we did not have to worry about the place to live and since the dormitory was within the campus premise it was very much convenient. 3 Impressions of activities during study abroad The theme for this year was Smart Green Cities thus we were expecting to learn more about the technological aspects and different dimensions of Smart Green Cities. However, once we reached the host university we came to realize the program was modified to Entrepreneurship and Innovation management which came to us as a shock. We dint get as much opportunities to learn about the technological aspects and innovation related to it in the Host country. We were also looking forward to knowing about the contribution or the activities pursued by the host university in the field of selected topic, but unfortunately this did not happen.

4 An episode in which you noticed personal growth since you completed the study abroad Apart from the disappointments, this program somehow encouraged me to think out of the box and think about whether being an entrepreneur and start my own business could be a viable alternative for my career. The workshop was helpful in a sense it taught us about the things one needs to take into consideration while starting up business, also encouraged me to push my boundaries and come up with innovative business ideas. One of the greatest advantage of participating in this workshop came in the form of knowing a lot of people creating a diverse network all around world. I was able to make good friends even during my short period of stay. 5 Cost of study abroad My overall expenditure was around 20,000 Yen other than the airfare food and accommodation which was managed by the program coordinators. 6 Living arrangements during the study abroad I lived in dormitory provided by the host university. 7 Language study during the study abroad No languages were studied. 8 How you want to utilize the experience(s) from now on I would definitely use the knowledge and experience gained from this program to suggest some friends who are trying to start their own business and later in life I would use it if I want to start a new venture on my own. 9 Any trouble or issues faced abroad No. 10 Any advice for students who wish to study abroad This workshop is a great platform for us to meet young researchers from different parts of the world and create our network which might be helpful and useful to further our career as well as to learn from fellow researchers activities. Particularly for me, seeing the research activities currently being carried out by other participants increased my motivation to do my own research.

ASPIRE STUDENT WORKSHOP 2015 IN HONG KONG (HUKST) H.R.S This Journey started with a pamphlet hanging in the information board that attracted me with the word Smart Green City written on it and force me to apply this program. I wrote my motivation letter about my reason to apply and attended the interview screening. In this application step, preparation is very important. What I did was a little research about the theme, which was Smart Green City, about its current trend and the latest news, and then tried to find my interest related to it. After the test, only luck will help you. Fortunately, I was selected to this program with 4 other students from different department, and we were asked to prepare for documents, permission, presentation about TokyoTech (which we did not have the chance to present) and soon. Some of the students also need to apply for the visa, but again, luckily I am not required to take Visa to go to Hong Kong. The preparation is not too many, but too troublesome if you do not pay attention to the small things. It was a fruitful week (18 July~25 July) I spend there in Hong Kong to increase my insight in business and to mingle there among the excellent student of ASPIRE universities. The event took place in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, located in the east part of Kowloon Island. It is about 30 minutes by train from the center of Hong Kong. The weather there was very Hong Kong (There is no expression that could fit the humid, hot and raining weather in Hong Kong). We arrived in Hong Kong and took taxi to the HKUST with no problem, and in the same first day, we were invited to an orientation event and welcome dinner where we talked to our new friends a lot, then it is after that when we start to confuse about what we were doing there. Although the theme is Smart Green City, the first 5 days of this program was a entrepreneurship camp, which is a business, especially for starting up company, learning program which we did not see the correlation with our original theme. I, personally, enjoy the entrepreneurship program because I have interest in starting up a

business. We studied about how we could design a business that contains the value for the costumer, and how to make it big, not just work. But for one who expected to learn more about the smart green city, it was nothing. We only had few chances to learn about the smart green city in Hong Kong, from the lecture and visit to the smart green building, and that s all. Moreover, we were required to give a presentation about the smart green city in the ASPIRE Forum that we learned almost nothing about it in the camp. So, all we did is just go with the flow. None of us understood what exactly was going on there. However, it was the participants who make this program an awesome experience for us. The interaction with excellent people came from all over China and the students from ASPIRE universities become a good stimulant for us to think more and to know more about ourselves. We discuss and share idea a lot about our study and also our daily life. It is always good to see another people way of thinking, and it just feels like seeing yourself from different eyes. The best thing from this program is all the cost was borne by the TokyoTech and HKUST. All we have to pay is just the transport fee from home to the airport and from the airport in Hong Kong to HKUST. Including our accommodation, that we are provided a room for two people together with the student from another university, and also foods, all was provided by the HKUST that we could eat in the cafeteria there 3 times a day. Of course, we travel and spend quite amount of money there to buy souvenirs and enjoy Hong Kong that all was worth it. However, be careful, we regret so much about buying souvenirs in the airport that unbelievably expensive. Don t try it; just buy yours in the town. After all, it was a challenging experience for us. I hope I could use my learning there to make my own business and to improve my skill to socialize and mingle in a big community (that is one of my weaknesses that I want to conquer right now). Moreover, we got a lot of new ideas and connections there from all over the world that may open our way of thinking into a new level that, I think, is the real point of this kind of event. For you that are thinking about joining this kind of program, be careful, it s addictive.

A.R Dept. of Built Environment Muromachi Laboratory Report on ASPIRE Forum 2015: Smart Green Cities Name of the program Venue Duration of the program Number of participants from Tokyo Tech Other participating universities ASPIRE Forum 2015- Smart Green Cities Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) 18 th July to 24 th July, 2015 Five (5) HKUST, KAIST, NTU, TSINGHUA How and why did I get involved with ASPIRE I ve attended an workshop in Hayama under International Program for Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering (IPISE) organized by TokyoTech last year. Whilst in that workshop, I had to prepare a presentation on TokyoTech and it s reputation. Being a foreign and M1 student, I was curious to know all details about TokyoTech and came to know about the ASPIRE (Asian Science and Technology Pioneering Institutes of Research and Education) forum. It was the 2 nd semester when I saw the advertisement of ASPIRE 2015 on website after one of my friend mentioned the deadline of application. It required two tier of screening process before I got selected for the program. I was very excited and enthusiastic to be a part of this program as the title of this year s ASPIRE program was smart green cities with an integration of innovation and entrepreneurship. As an engineer, it s possible for me to relate innovation with smart green cities, but, in real life all innovation goes in vain if it s not properly propagated to the end users or policy makers. That s where entrepreneurship comes in. Entrepreneurs can think out of the box and can make innovation come true by introducing it to the market and general people. They could be the bridge between these two parties. And, I was interested to learn how does it work from both professional and amateur point of view. This workshop gave me that opportunity. Pre- workshop preparations This was the very first time for me to go abroad after coming to Japan and it s not an ordinary site seeing trip, thus it calls for few adjustments and preparations before I fly. Firstly, before applying to the program, I checked my course schedules if they are overlapping with the workshop, then took permission from my academic advisor. After getting a heads up, I proceeded for my VISA application. It takes about two weeks (according to the Chinese Embassy website) to get a VISA if all papers are properly submitted. It s wise to apply for VISA earlier. It should be noted that an air ticket itinerary is required to fill up the VISA form, thus an air-ticket booking is perhaps something to be done before submitting the VISA application form. Meanwhile I confirmed my travel insurance. Ms. Sai from the International Co-operation Division, TokyoTech helped us a lot in preparing everything. A meeting was arranged to introduce all five participants with each other and to brief about the program. We were in touch before going to HKUST to talk about any kind of dilemma. I got the VISA smoothly and the first thing I did was check online the routes, MTR lines and some nice places to visit in HK. Few of my friends

A.R Dept. of Built Environment Muromachi Laboratory from HK helped me out with it. There was nothing to be worried about accommodation in HK since HKUST dormitory was ready to welcome us. Finally, I checked the weather beforehand and packed my stuffs according to it. My friend from China, Daniel was kind enough to help me with the currency exchange, for those, who don t have such friend, travelex is always there. Activities during ASPIRE workshop On arrival at HKUST, the first thing came to my notice was the beauty of the campus. It s located near the sea and can be seen from almost every building. And, I realized how gigantic the campus is during our first group work- to talk group selfies in specific places of the campus. This group work was proved to be a very efficient way to explore the campus. The entire school looked like a piece of heaven surrounded by mountains which is floating on the sea. Here is glimpse through the dormitory window- On first day, I came to learn that HKUST entrepreneurship center arranged a training camp called innovation and entrepreneurship training camp 2015 which was open for all who wants to know about start ups (http://www.ec.ust.hk/pages/trainingcamp.html); one of their theme was green smart cities. HKUST entrepreneurship center and ASPIRE worked together to make this workshop a success. Thus, we got to meet and get introduced with not only ASPIRE students, but also other people from different fields of expertise. The time schedule was given beforehand was followed strictly. Each of us was given a bundle of food coupons for the 7days program. All the meals were delicious and there were variety of those. Other than the cafeteria, HKUST let us taste the traditional and local foods everyday during coffee breaks- fish balls, prawn dumplings, egg rolls, tarts etc.

A.R Dept. of Built Environment Muromachi Laboratory

A.R Dept. of Built Environment Muromachi Laboratory The lectures were divided into several segments. First day, we learned and took active participation in discussion on start ups and practiced to find the value of any product from different point of view. Also, how the value of same product differs from customer to customer. These lectures carried on until the second day by Mr. Lee. Soon after we got the opportunity to meet Mr. Theodore Ma, Co-Founder of CoCoon from whom we learned pitching. Next, the marvelous prof. Zhang showed up and shared her idea of a new project of virtual medical center. I was very much inspired by her and her works. She is a genius in the field of wireless communication system. Aside from them, a group of young entrepreneur who were ex- HKUST students, presented their ideas and achievements. The activities weren t confined within the classroom, rather we talked and exchanged our views during breaks and dinner. Apart from everyday classes, although the schedule was pretty tight, we managed to visit few places. We teamed up with other ASPIRE students and quickly planned to go to the city center and taste some authentic Chinese food. During this period, I visited Tsim sha Tsui, local Ladies Market, went to Victoria Peak through tram, Star Avenue, Causeway Bay- all these places. HK is quiet expensive to roam about, I had to make an octopus card (the same as Pasmo in Japan) for everyday use. But, sometimes, sharing taxi with 5 friends was better and less costly than riding a bus and MTR. I didn t buy much, only few traditional gift items for my friends and my Lab. A little tip for future, never buy anything from the airport duty free shops, its too expensive. I bought most of the things from HK city center and local market. However, HK is like Tokyo in terms of cost; I went HK with 1000HKD and returned with 300HKD left.

A.R Dept. of Built Environment Muromachi Laboratory The last two days stay at HKUST was full of presentations. Thursday presentation was based on Innovation and Entrepreneurship and my group s title was Dye Sensitized Solar Cells as it was one of my group mate s current research. The final day was very important for us, all the VPs from five universities came and presented and I got to learn so much about smart city concept in one single day. My final group presentation was titled Smart Green City - I choose the topic and prepared the slides. It was a combination of smart energy usage, smart transportation system and environment friendly energy sources. The main target was to build a future smart green city which will be efficient, sustainable and livable for future generation as well as us. My group mates were from NTU and HKUST, they helped me deciding about the topics. I included all my group mates (and my) current and future research into the presentation so that it doesn t become fairy tales but based on factual reality.

A.R Dept. of Built Environment Muromachi Laboratory During this workshop, I came to meet one of my group mate, who is in his final year of undergrad. and is already on the way to become an entrepreneur. His research is very interesting and present market relevant. While we were busy learning and preparing our presentations on innovation and entrepreneurship, he was having meeting with his probable investor. His dedication and integrity to his work and research amazed me. He also gave us a tour to his laboratories (he has two of themmanufacturing lab. and acoustic lab.), it was the first time we get inside a laboratory of HKUST and it was thrilling. After coming back from HKUST, I felt that inspiration to work with my own research. I hope to be someone people will recognize and remember through my work. I m really grateful to TokyoTech and ASPIRE for giving me such an opportunity.
