Site Specific for F.H. Sherman Recreation and Learning Purpose and Scope The purpose of this document is to provide supplemental Health and Safety information specific to the F.H. Sherman Recreation and Learning (hereafter referred to as Recreation ), over and above what is outlined in the Contractor Health and Safety Program. The Recreation is located at 388 First Road East, Stoney Creek, L8G 3X4. This information is used to support the Safe Work Permit process for contractors and supplemental labour performing work in the Recreation, as well as for the orientation of visitors and new employees to the building. Overview of Building Dofasco's Recreation is home to recreation and training facilities and is used by Dofasco employees, retirees, associates and visitors / guests. It features multiple classroom and meeting rooms, two arenas, gymnasiums, tennis courts and hut, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, golf driving range, mini-putt course & office, pavilion, field house, security building, and maintenance garage and compound. Health and Safety Information Specific task or procedural issues will be dealt with in Safe Work Permit meetings. Any hazards listed may change from time to time and it is up to the contractor to use discretion and ask the Dofasco Recreation Staff if uncertain. When in doubt, ask! Personal Protective Equipment The Recreation is a combination of indoor office, classroom, recreation and fitness facilities as well as outdoor recreation facilities. If a contractor performs work, personal protective equipment must be worn appropriate to the task. Dofasco minimum requirement is hard hat, safety footwear, and safety glasses with permanently attached side-shields, unless otherwise specified. Area Health and Safety Hazards The Recreation is surrounded by vehicular traffic areas and parking lots. Stay alert and be aware of movement of traffic when visiting the building or working around its grounds. Page 1 of 5
All stairways are equipped with handrails. Use these handrails to prevent slips, trips, or falls. Be aware of possibility of flying balls when working adjacent to the baseball diamonds, tennis courts or golf driving range. Be aware of movement of maintenance equipment outside. As the complex was constructed after the mid 1970 s, the presence of asbestos is unlikely. Regulated Substances Review Material Safety Data Sheets before handling any unfamiliar materials. Dofasco Material Safety Data Sheets are available on the internal network. Area Checking and Checkout Requirements All contractors should enter through the front of the building and check in at the Recreation office. Regular hours are: Summer - 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. (7 days a week) Winter 7 a.m. until midnight (during the week) 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. on weekends) Major Emergency Response Plan (MERP) Maps for the Major Emergency Response Plan for the Recreation are attached. MERP posters throughout the building indicate the closest exits to use, as well as the Assembly area. The signal to evacuate will be a fire bell. The Assembly two areas are indicated by a MERP sign. Area #1 is located between the paved and gravel main parking lots. Area #2 is located at the Green Mountain Road Gate. Confined Space Entries The existing confined space exists within the elevator shaft and within Condenser in the Compressor Room. A CSE procedure is available for this purpose. In the event of an irrigation leak when digging might be required, a confined space entry situation could develop. These situations will require assessment on a case-by-case basis. Page 2 of 5
