Granite Oaks Middle School Señorita Moss Foreign Language Department Room: B5 Office Hours: by appointment; before & after school (916) 315-9009 Ext. 3205 cmoss@rocklin.k12.ca.us Welcome to Granite Oaks Middle School and to Spanish Level 1! Spanish 1 is a year-long course that follows the curriculum of Spring View Middle School and Whitney High School. This is a high school course and will focus on basic Spanish grammar and vocabulary development. Curriculum We will be using the Exprésate Curriculum Units 1-5 and will follow the 5 national standards for foreign language instruction: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. Each of these national standards will be addressed through various types of activities and assignments. Grading Grading will be determined by 2 or 3 Unit Assessments for each chapter and class participation. Each unit of study will have 1 or 2 Unit Quizzes and 1Unit Test which includes an Essential Skills Section. Students must correctly answer 3 out of the 5 Essential Skills Questions or retake the Essential Skills Section of the test until they are able to do so. Grading is as follows: A = 100%-90% B = 89%-80%

C = 79-70% NM (No Mark = F) = 69% & below Students must earn a minimum of 85% in the class and pass all of the Essential Skills Sections in order to be eligible for Spanish II at Whitney or Rocklin High School. Assessments Assessments are cumulative and will include reading, writing, speaking and listening activities. All quiz and test scores are final and no re-takes are offered. To prepare for these assessments, students are encouraged to utilize their workbook pages for review, to study the vocabulary flashcards daily and to seek help from the teacher and or peers. Materials for Success A Spanish folder or binder for all Spanish 1 handouts and class notes 5 packs of small 3 x 5 index cards. Any color is fine and can be lined or unlined. Phone Apps for flashcards are also available and encouraged Binder paper, pencil, pen Set of colored markers or pencils 1 White Board Marker 1 small cloth or sock to erase mini white boards Homework We will not be assigning Homework for Spanish 1. But paying close attention in class, taking neat and accurate notes and forming a habit of reviewing vocabulary words (5-10 minutes on a daily) or playing games and taking practice test on Quizlet.com are excellent ways to ensure your success. Cramming last minute for quizzes and tests is

not memorization, merely using short term memory storage that will evaporate quickly. Absences Missed assignments attributed to an excused absence may be completed by the end of the next class. Missed quizzes or tests attributed to an excused absence must be completed within one week of the absence. Student Behavior / Dress Code / Food & Drink / Electronic Devices Please follow the standards of student behavior and school dress code that is listed in the school handbook. Water only is allowed in class unless we have a special occasion or project planned. Gum is not allowed. Be smart, don t chew it in class. Cell phones must be turned off. You must keep them in your back packs, not in your pants pockets. If I see them or hear them they will be confiscated, unless being used for flashcard studying. Assessments 1. Unit Quizzes Students will be required to learn thematic vocabulary and concepts and will be given 1 or 2 formative assessment quizzes per unit. 2. Unit Tests Students will demonstrate mastery of the units Essential Skills and cumulative vocabulary via written tests with a listening component.

Flashcards Students will need to make flash cards for each vocabulary word in each unit. Vocabulary flash cards are assigned after the start of each unit. Diligent students use flashcards as a study aid for vocabulary quizzes as well as a review for unit tests. Full credit will be awarded to flashcards that are completed with your initials written on the upper right hand corner of each card, the Unit we are studying on the upper left, class period and cards should be numbered according to the numbers on the vocabulary packet. Phone apps are acceptable as well. * Flash card example: Front of card U1 CM Per. 1 Back of card 1. Hola 1. Hello/Hi Thank you for signing up to learn Spanish.
