Master on Energy Management Three-semester Master s degree course taught in English in Berlin

Welcome to the Technische Universität Berlin TU Berlin Paving the way to the future Dear students, Welcome to the internationally renowned Technische Universität Berlin located in Germany s capital city at the heart of Europe. I am most delighted that you have chosen our institution for your master s degree. With over 30.000 students, TU Berlin is one of the largest universities of technology in Germany. One of our most important tasks is to prepare our students for the challenges they will face in the future. The Master programme focuses on the technical, economical and legal principles related to gas and power markets. The programme will provide you with basic knowledge and skills connecting theory, research and practice. For these educational objectives, the EUREF Campus of TU Berlin offers an inspiring atmosphere and a great number of outstanding scientific events. With this brochure, we would like to help you in getting started at TU Berlin. You will find an introduction to the Master programme as well as helpful links and contact details. For further information please do not hesitate to contact our team of the Academic Advisory and Examination Office. They are here to assist you with all the necessary formalities. I wish you a motivating and successful time at our university. Prof. Dr. Christian Thomsen President

Introduction Dear students The Master programme on Energy Management is intended to give young economists, engineers, and legal scholars from universities, enterprises, law firms, and public authorities the opportunity to gain in-depth, specialist knowledge and enhance their professional skills in the area of energy infrastructure and the specific challenges resulting from climate and economic changes. The degree can be attained in 3 semesters as a full-time programme. The course is based on a learning concept that combines traditional in-class teaching with electronic communication via the university s internet platform and independent study. The practical and technical knowledge is further complemented by various excursions to relevant institutions and infrastructure operators. Apart from professors of economics, engineers, specialised (energy) practitioners from regulatory authorities, consulting firms, and companies with a great deal of case experience will instruct the students. The course language is English. I wish you success in completing the course, but also enjoyable teamwork with students from other countries in Berlin s cosmopolitan atmosphere. Prof. Dr. Dr. Dres. h.c. Franz Jürgen Säcker Academic director 3

Studying energy economics and energy management with the experts Companies that are responsible for energy management nowadays have to realign their strategy and profile and include solutions guided by sustainability criteria. This implies an increased need for broadly educated, skilled employees. However, existing professional training courses often do not meet this need due to their sole focus on management. The TU Berlin s master programme in Energy Management closes this educational gap and prepares students for technical leadership positions in relevant energy utilities. The master programme is taught in English so that it is attractive to international students and connects in-class teaching with elearning methods (blended learning). The programme was developed in cooperation with transnational companies specialised in global energy management. Against the background of climate and economic changes, the Energy Management programme deals with the challenges and opportunities in shaping our future energy infrastructure. It is designed as extraoccupational and requires at least one year of postgraduate working experience. Making use of emerging synergetic effects, the programme allows the development of solution strategies for the problems of the modern society. The focus lies upon the students learning process when using up-to-date teaching methods for imparting basic skills and linking them with both practice and research. Therefore, the programme s interdisciplinary content, which covers the political, economic, technical and legal aspects of the energy markets, gives students and future employees a distinctive profile and qualifies them for a leading position in the energy sector. Learning and studying in small groups of up to 30 students allows for individual and excellent learning conditions. 4

The course program and structure The central question of the programme is how to maintain and develop today s energy infrastructure in a way that meets the requirements resulting from both climate change and economic changes. T he Energy Management programme develops answers based on latest research combined with practiced experience on the TU EUREF Campus tomorrow s energy-efficient model city. In its holistic perspective the programme takes technical, economic, ecological, and legal aspects into account. The master programme is taught over a period of three semesters. The first two semesters include lectures, tutorials, seminars, as well as excursions and varied online materials related to practice. The programme will be completed with the 3rd semester by passing a pure online course and writing a master thesis.
