DGIM_41 What is Graphic Design?

What is it? Definition DGIM_41 Graphic design is the art of communication, stylizing, and problemsolving through the use of type, space and image. Wiki What is Graphic Design?

What is it? Paul Rand Design is the synthesis of form and content. Form: a type or kind of something, one of several or many different ways in which something is seen, experienced, or produced; the shape of something Content... DGIM_41 What is Graphic Design?

Kinds of Design 1_ Image-Based Designers develop images to represent the ideas their clients want to communicate. Images can be incredibly powerful and compelling tools of communication, conveying not only information but also moods and emotions. 2_ Type-Based In some cases, designers rely on words to convey a message, but they use words differently from the ways writers do. To designers, what the words look like is as important as their meaning. 3_ Images & Type Designers often combine images and typography to communicate a client's message to an audience. It is up to the designer not only to find or create appropriate letterforms and images but also to establish the best balance between them. 4_ Symbols, logos and Logotypes Symbols and logos are special, highly condensed information forms or identifiers. Symbols are abstract representation of a particular idea or identity.

Past, present, and you. What kind of design will you contribute?

Keep in mind Massimo Vignelli One life is too short for doing everything. We like design to be visually powerful, intellectually elegant and above all timeless. If you can design one thing, then you can design everything. If you do it right, it will last forever. The life of a designer is a life of fight against the ugliness.

Owner, Partner, Principal An owner, partner or principal holds an equity position and has major responsibility for a firm having employees.

Owner, Partner, Principal Helps make decisions that establish the entire companies trajectory.

The Boss s Boss

Design/Creative Director (CD or DD) A creative director or design director is the creative head of the firm, advertising agency or in-house design department and has final creative authority. Key responsibilities can include the development of graphic design, advertising, communication and industrial design.

The Boss

Art Director (AD) The art director establishes the conceptual and stylistic direction for all design staff and orchestrates work, as well as the work of production artists, photographers, illustrators, pre-press technicians, printers and anyone else who is involved in the development of a project. The art director generally selects the suppliers and has final creative authority if there isn't any creative director on staff.

The Gets-it-Done-er

Design/Project Manager (PM) No rad picture, Sorry, but a designer, manager or project manager manages the creative staff, evaluates its work, ensures that projects meet the requirements of the design brief and are completed on time and within budget. A design manager may work in a corporation and manage the hiring of design firms and the use of their design services.

Designers Senior Mid-level Entry or Junior The senior designer is responsible for the design solutions from concept to completion. In some firms, a senior designer directs the work of one or more junior designers, who generate comps and create layouts and final art. An intermediate graphic designer is responsible for the design of graphic applications such as collateral material, environmental graphics, books and magazines, corporate identity and branding, film tinting and multimedia interfaces, from concept to completion. An entry level designer is a designer who has been out of College/University for less than two years. Intern A Student or trainee who works sometimes without pay at a trade or occupation in order to gain work experience.

Office Manager While not a designer, Joan was an important part of Mad Men and it feels wrong to leave her out So Joan she s bossy.

With all that said: You don t need to be great with drawing, but it helps. You don t need a postgraduate degree or even an undergraduate one. You don t need to buy a fancy computer to begin. You will need a portfolio. You will need visual thinking skills. You will need to understand the programs and tools.

One more perspective Milton Glaser Designers are by definition both victims and participants, defining and being defined by their times. Milton Glaser reminds us that even the newest ideas must have a basis in the threads of history and sustain themselves in the continuity of truth. After all, the tools you use should only be recognized as extensions of talent and insight not as replacements. Andrew Shalat, Macworld DGIM_41 What is Graphic Design?

For Next Class, I would like you to put the following things in your book. 1_ Definition of Gestalt, and one cut & paste example. 2_ Cut & Paste, three examples of Design (maybe something you ve found on Pinterest) into your book, with a brief explanation of why you chose it. Beyond that you simply like it. 3_Record your three topics in your book, just write them down; if you havn t already. And begin your explorations, FILL IT UP! This will not be your only work, so please write this down.
