1 Title Graphic Design 2 Code A10210 3 Level 4 4 Value 1 credit 5 Purpose This module will introduce the learner to graphic design, typography and images as a method of communication. It will also give the learner an appreciation of the design process and knowledge of the pre-production print process. It will enhance the learner s creativity and methods of selfexpression and complement other Level 4 modules in related disciplines. It is an elective module which can be combined with others to lead to a Level 4 Certificate. 6 Preferred Entry Level Level 3 Certificate or equivalent. 7 Special Requirements None. 8 General Aims Candidates who successfully complete this module will: 8.1 understand the applications of graphic design 8.2 acquire a knowledge and understanding of the graphic design process 8.3 become aware of career opportunities in graphic design 8.4 become aware of production methods for print 8.5 develop an appreciation of typography and image, their historical development and contemporary usage. 1
9 Units None. 10 Specific Learning Outcomes The learner should be able to: 10.1 identify graphic design applications 10.2 research career opportunities in graphic design locally and nationally 10.3 discuss examples of graphic design with reference to e.g. colour, scale, shape, contrast, pattern, line 10.4 identify positive and negative attributes of selected graphic design examples e.g. logos, signage, packaging design, advertising 10.5 source and select image appropriate to medium, target audience and purpose using primary or secondary sources 10.6 construct and manipulate image and text using relevant conventions, e.g. spacing, guttering, tramlines 10.7 give examples of the evolution of typography 10.8 outline the roles of the graphic designer and the printer 10.9 describe the sequential print production process 10.10 recognise suitable uses of image and type faces 10.11 demonstrate safe graphic design workshop practice 10.12 present a design solution from a given brief. 11 Assessment 11.1 Technique Portfolio of coursework. Components The learner must produce evidence of achievement in a portfolio of work comprising of assignments and one finished graphic design piece not less than A3 size: The evidence should include accumulated support studies, note books and visual diary, preparatory sketches, career opportunity research. 12 Performance Criteria 12.1 Portfolio of Coursework The performance criteria are outlined in the accompanying Individual Candidate Marking Sheet. 13 Grading Pass 50%-64% Merit 65%-79% Distinction 80%-100% 3
