Web 2.0. Cloud. Big-Data. Is it just Gen-Y I.T. geek sales talk? From an IT perspective YES. From a business & consulting perspective NO. Images from: http://www.theequinest.com/green-horse/, http://news.nost.org.cn 3
Everything you can think of Data Growth Worldwide (Minimum 62% P.A.) Currently store Zettabytes?! (1M GB) Capacity to use it? We currently throw most of it away. 4
Big-Data difference - it s primarily not just your data. There s a world of data out there, and yours may be just a room/building/street block. Images from: http://www.theequinest.com/green-horse/, http://news.nost.org.cn 5
What s it for? Asking Questions. Analytics. Why would you want it? Cheap. Cheaper than drilling in a downturn?! You bet. What other questions could you ask? Bioinformatics Financial Insurance Mining? 6
Who could use it? You. The geologist. Most people who understand it are solution providers like me, not content experts like you; GIS Gurus; Database Nerds; IT Geeks. When should you consider it? Now. If geologist jobs are trending down, people are looking for easy gains in process, efficiency, the needle amongst the hay without paying for it consider looking at old data. Boddington in Gold (50+ Y.O. Data) Cobbora (50+ Y.O. Data) Get Ahead! 7
Caveats! It s not a replacement for geology, exploration, evaluation. It s a tool. It s an arrow in your quiver. Only as good as your data. & More. Consider the future benefits with costs Quick wins? What can we do with all this? Enter our case study... 8
Hypothetical Case Study The Sydney Basin Largely undeveloped seam right under Sydney. The Sydney Basin has a long history of coal exploration and mining, with several thousand boreholes being drilled in the basin. Petroleum exploration has been modest with approximately 70 conventional petroleum wells, 35 coal seam methane wells and approximately 10 000 kilometres of seismic surveys. The basin is considered prospective for oil, gas, coal seam methane and oil shale. Although there have been no discoveries, there are numerous oil and gas shows from both petroleum and coal exploration drilling. Division of Resources and Energy NSW Various public records available Traditional Method Use your own data in targeting combined with some public domain data. 9
Hypothetical Case Study The Sydney Basin Big Data What could it look like? 10
Hypothetical Case Study The Sydney Basin What are some things we could look for? Improved coal targeting and allocation of results by valid contribution. Company Comparisons Compare Chemistries Operations (Why are we different from CompanyX?) Output Forecast Cross commodity analysis Cap rocks? Alterations conductive of gas deposit? Gas? Can t measure for it?! Shale types, Hawkesbury sandstone!? Outcrops, Water-bore Data What else? Onsite Miner Observations? Safety hazards? I.e. Gas boiling from water puddles in ground. Is this crazy? No. It s in other industries from land use to finance. It s already in our industry in a basic form. Privacy. We already give our consultants all our data. 11
