1. General 1.1. DSL (xdsl) Digital Subscriber Line, or DSL, refers to a family of technologies that provide a digital connection over copper wires of the local telephone network. SVR can be connected on Internet through DSL as follows. The simplest configuration is SVR is to connect to DSL Modem directly. DVR If DSL router and s switch are added onto the above network, several clients (PC and SVR) can be installed onto the network by sharing an IP address. DVR There are also some routers that are integrated with a switch, so that the router itself may run as a switch. DVR *Please note that crossover cables might not be necessary for connection between DSL modems and the respective connected device(s). Regular straight through cables may be used. Each network environment requires setting SVR and DSL router differently. However, the basics on setup are similar to each other. The major difference is whether DSL router supports PPPoE or SVR is configured for supporting the PPPoE function. Examples of DSL technologies (sometimes called xdsl) include IDSL, ADSL, HDSL, RADSL, SDSL, VDSL, and G.SHDSL. Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 4
1.2. Modem 1.2.1. Modem The word is from Pierre Lacoste "modem", a portmanteau word constructed from "modulator" and "demodulator", refers to a device that modulates an analog "carrier" signal (such as sound), to encode digital information, and that also demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information. The goal is to produce a signal that can be transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data. Primarily used to communicate via telephone lines, modems can be used over any means of transmitting analog signals, from driven diodes to radio. 1.2.2. DSL Modem DSL modems are also a kind of modem, the main difference being that they are not limited to the "voiceband" audio frequencies carried over the telephone line. 1.2.3. Modem Port Description Each modem may have different buttons and LEDs. However modems may have following buttons or ports. - Power Switch: This button is to turn on the Modem. - Power Connector: This is to supply power to the Modem. - Ethernet: This port is to connect Ethernet cable to DSL Router (or SVR, PC etc) - DSL: This port is to connect telephone line. 1.3. DSL Router 1.3.1. Router A router consists of a computer networking device that determines the next network point to which to forward a data packet toward its destination, a process known as routing. A router must be connected to at least two networks, or it will have nothing to route. A router creates and/or maintains a table, called a "routing table" that stores the best routes to certain network destinations and the "routing metrics" associated with those routes. Routing is a core concept of the Internet and many other networks. Routing provides the means of forwarding logically addressed packets from their local subnetwork toward their ultimate destination. In large networks packets may pass through many intermediary destinations before reaching their destination. A router creates and/or maintains a table, called a "routing table" that stores the best routes to certain network destinations and the "routing metrics" associated with those routes. 1.3.2. DSL Router DSL router is a router that processes PPPoE to make Internet connection through DSL Modem. Most of the routers used in home or small business has PPPoE feature. To share a DSL Modem with more than one networked device such as a PC or SVR, a router is necessary. 1.3.3. Router Port Description Every DSL router may have following buttons or ports. Power Switch: This button is to turn on the router. Power Connector: This is to supply power to the router. LAN Port: This port is to connect clients like SVR, PC etc. Normally there is one LAN port unless the DSL router is a switch-integrated model. WAN Port: This port is to connect DSL Modem. Uplink Port: This port is to connect to another switch or HUB. There is no Uplink port unless the DSL router is a switch-integrated model. Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 6
2. Installing SVR to DSL Modem without DSL Router 2.1. Network Configuration This configuration is typical with a network that only has a dynamic IP address. 2.1.1. Connection In this network configuration, each device should be wired as below. Telephone line (DSL) is connected to DSL Modem DSL Modem and SVR should be connected with the Ethernet cable that is provided by ISP (usually a crossover cable). Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 7
2.1.2. How it works For this configuration, the SVR does PPPoE process to get an IP address from ISP to be connected onto Internet. Network Viewer DDNS SVR 1) SVR does PPPoE process through DSL Modem. 2) SVR gets a dynamic IP address from ISP. 3) SVR registers to DDNS on Internet by setting DDNS Server as ON. * You have to register to www.standalone4ch.com website by yourself. If you set DDNS as ON, DVR s MAC information will be automatically registered. 4) User accesses SVR with the registered MAC address through Network Viewer on Internet. SVR Configuration With this network, SVR should set the network values as follows. There is no need to set DSL Modem. Set the necessary items for network connection to a computer. If the DVR is connected to a PPPoE xdsl line, the user ID and password must be assigned. Use the user ID and password provided by the ISP. Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 8
DDNS Registration 1) Sign up at ipolis website. - The website is [www.samsungipolis.com] - Agreement the general terms and conditions - SIGN UP page: check ID availability Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 9
2) The product registration is possible after sign up. - Sign in at ipolis website - Product List (If you didn t register products, there are no list) Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 10
- Product Registration (Check ID availability) - Check the registration at product list 3) Set-up DDNS information. SVR-1660 can be set up under the network screen in the order as listed in the menu. If you press the menu button and select the network, you will see the screen as shown in the diagram below. In the below screen, select DDNS as yes, and in the DDNS SERVER DOMAIN NAME enter DDNS server address. (Default: www.samsungipolis.com) ID and PW are the same as that created when you registered the product on the ipolis homepage. Please enter the domain ID and PW. Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 11
When this process is finished, the DVR frame section has now completed DDNS set up. 3) The connection status of selected product can check on product list. [VIEW]: See the log-in page of selected product [Edit]/ [Delete]: Edit/Delete the selected product, password is needed for checking The product ID (domain) can not change at registered status. When the product needs to change the ID, first of all, delete the desired product, and register product again. Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 12
3. Installing an SVR to DSL Router 3.1. Network Configuration This configuration is to share an IP address with multiple PCs and a single SVR. 3.1.1. Connection For this network configuration, each device should be configured as below. Telephone line (DSL) is connected to DSL Modem DSL Modem and DSL router should be connected with the Ethernet cable that is provided by ISP (usually a crossover cable). PC and SVR should be connected to DSL router with Ethernet cables (must be direct cables). Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 13
3.1.2. How it works For this network configuration, the DSL router does PPPoE process to get an IP address from ISP. It is necessary to set DSL router to do Port Forwarding so that SVR can be accessed by Network Viewer over Internet. Network Viewer DDNS SVR 1) DSL router does PPPoE process through DSL Modem. 2) DSL router gets a dynamic (official) IP address from ISP. 3) SVR goes out to Internet by translating the local IP address to the official IP address that is acquired by DSL router. 4) SVR register the translated official IP address to DDNS on Internet. 5) User accesses SVR with the registered IP address through Network Viewer on Internet. 6) DSL router translates the official IP address to the local IP address of SVR and routes the traffic to SVR. 3.2. SVR Configuration 3.2.1. Network Configuration 1) Press Menu button. 2) Go to [System] [Communication] - [Network] menu. 3) Set Type as Ethernet. 4) Leave DHCP as Off 5) Leave Port as 4000 * In case of SVR-440, SVR-450, SVR-940, you must leave 3495 not 4000. 6) Set IP address with a certain IP address which belongs to the DSL router s sub-network range. Please refer to the below examples. This example is assuming that the Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 DSL Router IP address Available IP on LAN Recommended IP for SVR 192.168.0.1 (or 192.168.0.254) 192.168.0.2 ~ 192.168.0.253 192.168.0.253 192.168.1.1 (or 192.168.1.254) 192.168.1.2 ~ 192.168.1.253 192.168.1.253 192.168.2.1 (or 192.168.2.254) 192.168.2.2 ~ 192.168.2.253 192.168.2.253 If the router limits IP addresses for the clients, SVR should be assigned an IP address of the range. Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 14
7) Supposing DSL router has Netmask as 255.255.255.0, enter Netmask as 255.255.255.0 8) Enter Gateway with the same value as the DSL router s IP address. (See for the Gateway address of each manufacturer. However this may differ among models of the manufacturer. Most cases, it is 192.168.xxx.1) D-Link, Linksys, Netgear 3Com Netopia Belkin, SMC 192.168.0.1 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.254 192.168.2.1 9) Set DNS properly. If you do not have the value, contact your ISP (from where you purchased the Internet line) and ask for values. (At the very least DNS1 should be set.) 10) Set DDNS as ON. Please refer to following ports should be set to do Port Forwarding. Port Program 4000 TCP SNM-128S/P SVR-945, SVR-960, SVR-1645, SVR-1660, SVR-1680, SVR-3200 3495 TCP SNM-64S/P, SNM-128S/P SVR440 Viewer SVR-450, SVR-940, SVR-440, Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 15
- 3.3. DSL Router Configuration For this network configuration, DSL router does following tasks. PPPoE to access Internet by getting official IP address from ISP. DHCP function to provide local IP address to the clients on LAN NAT to lead a client of a local IP address on Internet by providing official IP address. NAPT (Port Forward / Virtual Server) to route incoming traffic to designated server on LAN. Firewall to protect the client on LAN against attacks from outside. 3.3.1. PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) PPPoE is a network protocol for encapsulating PPP frames in Ethernet frames. It is used mainly with cable modem and DSL services. It offers standard PPP features such as authentication, encryption, and compression. SVR should be configured not to do xdsl because DSL router does the process. 3.3.2. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) DHCP provides a means to allocate IP addresses dynamically to computers on a local area network (LAN). A network administrator may configure DSL router with the range of IP addresses to DHCP and each client computer on the LAN has its TCP/IP software configured to request an IP address automatically from the DHCP server in the router when that client computer starts up. SVR should be configured not to use DHCP feature, because SVR is a server and should be accessed by incoming traffic through port forwarding. SVR should be configured to use a static local IP address which belongs to the LAN. Each manufacturer s router uses LAN addresses as below and SVR can be assigned with the recommened IP address. DSL Router Available IP on LAN Recommended IP for SVR D-Link, Linksys, Netgear 192.168.0.2 ~ 192.168.0.253 192.168.0.253 3Com, Netopia 192.168.1.2 ~ 192.168.1.253 192.168.1.253 Belkin, SMC 192.168.2.2 ~ 192.168.2.253 192.168.2.253 If the router limits IP addresses for the clients, SVR should be assigned an IP address of the range. Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 16
3.3.3. NAT (Network Address Translation) NAT is a technique used in computer networking, which relies on rewriting IP addresses of network packets passing through a router or firewall. 3.3.3.1. NAT Any device that communicates with other devices over Internet should have an official IP address, and with private (LAN) IP address it is impossible to go on Internet. This feature allows any client of local IP address (e.g. 192.168.0. 2) on LAN to get on Internet with an official IP address (e.g. 66.252.134.184). SVR also uses the official IP address to register it on to DDNS over Internet. NAT allows SVR of LAN IP address (e.g. 192.168.0.253) to use the official IP address (e.g. 66.252.134.184). Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 17
3.3.3.2. Port Forwarding / Virtual Server / NAPT (Network Address Port Translation) This is the most important configuration on DSL router for SVR to be accessible by SVR Manager on Internet. SVR is a server which should respond to incoming request (traffic) from Network Viewer. When Network Viewer accesses SVR over Internet it uses the prefixed ports such as 4000 or 3495 When Network Viewer program accesses SVR over Internet, the program uses 4000 or 3495 port with the official IP address that SVR has registered on to DDNS. But the official IP address belongs not to SVR but to the DSL router on which SVR is connected. Therefore DSL router should figure out the local IP address of SVR, SVR Monitor tries to access SVR with the official IP address of 66.252.135.184 along with the port information of 4000 or 3495. However, the official IP address is not only used by SVR but also shared by other PCs on the LAN. Therefore Network Viewer does not know how to access SVR of the local IP address on the LAN. DSL router can solve this problem by using Port Forwarding function. User should configure DSL router to forward an incoming request that uses a certain port to a device that has a certain local IP address. This is port forwarding. Supposing that DSL router is set to forward incoming traffic that uses port 4000~4001 to its client that has local IP address of 192.168.0.253. SVR Monitor can access DSL router by using the official IP address (66.252.134.184) using 4000 or 3495 port. Then DSL router routes the incoming traffic to SVR of the local IP address (192.168.0.253). After the connection is established between SVR Monitor and SVR, user may monitor live image on his/her PC over Internet. Network 4000 Viewer SVR Please refer to the appendix for detailed information on how to set this feature with different models. Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 18
3.3.4. Firewall A firewall is a set of related programs, located at a network gateway server that protects the resources of a private network from users from other networks. Network administrator (or DSL router user) may block or open ports on the network. SVR uses ports to communicate with Network Viewer over Internet. Therefore 4000or 3495 port should be open through DSL router. PLEASE NOTE THAT INCOMING PORTS NEED TO BE SET ON THE ROUTER FOR SVR; OUTGOING PORT DO NOT NEED TO BE SET. DSL ROUTERS USUALLY DO NOT BLOCK OUTGOING TRAFFIC. THE FIREWALL FUNCTION DOES NOT BLOCK OUTGOING TRAFFIC; HOWEVER, PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR ROUTER IS NOT BLOCKING OUTGOING TRAFFIC FOR THE RESPECTIVE PORT. Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 19
4. Installing more than two SVRs on DSL Router 4.1. Network Configuration This configuration is to share an IP address with multiple PCs and multiple units of SVR. Please note that multiple units of SVR should share the official IP address through Port Forwarding function of DSL router. For this network configuration, each device should be wired as below. Telephone line (DSL) is connected to DSL Modem DSL Modem and DSL router should be connected with the Ethernet cable that is provided by ISP (usually crossover cable). PC and SVR should be connected to DSL router with Ethernet cables (must be direct cables). Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 20
4.1.1. How it works For this network configuration, DSL router does PPPoE process to get an IP address from ISP. It is necessary to set DSL router to do Port Forwarding so that multiple units of SVR may share the official IP address. 6) DSL router translates the official IP address to a certain local IP address of SVR and routes the traffic to SVR. It is very important to set all the SVR units ports different form each other. Otherwise, user cannot access all the SVR units properly over Internet. For the settings on SVR and DSL router, please refer to following pages. Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 21
4.2. IP sharing among multiple units of SVR Set SVR and DSL router in the same manner for setting the network of an SVR except for Port setting on SVR. In addition to this, add more ports to the DSL router for Port Forwarding as below. Assign the local IP addresses for the 1 st SVR and the 2 nd SVR - E.g. 1 st SVR local IP address: 192.168.0.252 - E.g. 2 nd SVR local IP address: 192.168.0.253 Change the 2 nd SVR s ports different FROM the 1 st SVR - E.g. 1 st SVR s Monitor Port: 4000 - E.g. 2 nd SVR s Monitor Port: 4001 Add the ports on DSL router for Port Forwarding. - E.g. Add the port 4000 for IP address 192.168.0.252 - E.g. Add the port 4001 for IP address 192.168.0.253 Then DSL router may route incoming traffic properly according to the used port number. 4001 Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 22
4.2.1. Port Setting 4.2.1.1. 1 ST SVR 1) Press Menu button. 2) Go to [Communication] [Network] - [Port] menu. 3) Leave Port as 4000 through which Network Viewer program accesses SVR. 4.2.1.2. 2 nd and 3 rd SVR 2 nd and 3 rd SVR can be configured to use ports as bellows. Port 2 nd SVR 4001 3 rd SVR 4002 4 th SVR 4003 It is not recommended to have more than 3 units share an IP address, especially if the network bandwidth is not enough for other devices. Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 23
5. Appendix : How to set Port forwarding 5.1. DSL Router Configuration To support multiple SVR units with an IP address, DSL router should route incoming traffic based on port number. Therefore user should add more port to DSL router for Port Forwarding. Below figure is an example to add more ports to Linksys router. With different models, you may add by referring to the instructions on Appendix. It is impossible to do Port Forwarding for configuration with multiple SVR units with an IP address and only one SVR unit can be accessed with an official IP address. Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. 24
