MCGLINN CANCER INSTITUTE Image Recovery Center Guide to Services www.readinghealth.org

Many treatments for cancer and other illness cause temporary or permanent physical changes that, along with the diagnosis, have the potential to alter body image. Many individuals experience hair loss, skin discoloration, and scarring. Others find that their appearance has changed dramatically, and they need to reassess their body and self-image. The Image Recovery Center at McGlinn Cancer Institute addresses appearance issues with clothing, cosmetics, hair replacement, and mastectomy products. Why is Image Recovery important during the treatment process? Facing the mirror, family, and friends can be very difficult at this time. Changes in your hair, skin, and nails may occur depending upon the type of illness being treated and the intensity of the therapy. Knowing how to prevent and care for these possible side effects will allow you to experience a better quality of life during your recovery. Who staffs the Image Recovery Center? The Image Recovery Center is staffed by caring and knowledgeable individuals who understand coping with illness and the side effects associated with treatments, including Certified Breast Fitters, Licensed Cosmotologist, and a Licensed Massage Therapist. What is Image Recovery? Our image recovery program is designed to help you understand and prepare for the appearance changes that you may experience due to illness, treatment, or trauma. By providing you with education and an abundance of resources, the image recovery process gives you the ability to better cope with the physical changes that may result from your disease or treatment. We will teach you how to normalize your physical appearance, enabling you to become an active, informed participant in your recovery.
