The Wildcats (2-5) got as close as 53-51 on Mikel Trapp s free throw with 11:21 remaining and 55-53 on a Ricky Johnson jumper with 10:21 left. UCF (4-1) built its lead back up to nine, and when the Wildcats made it a two possession game on a Trapp three-pointer with 2:09 left and a lay-up at the 1:02 mark, McBride answered each time to cap off his 31-point night. Quentin Brewer s double-double of a career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds paced the Wildcats, who shot a season-best 51.9 percent (27-52) from the field in addition to giving up a season-low nine turnovers. Trapp added 15 points, including four from behind the arc, while Johnson, making his first appearance since injuring his ankle at Arizona State, posted 11 points and five assists. UCF threatened to pull away midway during the second half, opening up a ten-point lead on three occasions, the last at 53-43 with 12:56 left. Consecutive dunks from Ugo Okam spirited a 10-2 Wildcat run that narrowed it to a two-point game.ucf 75, BETHUNE-COOKMAN 67 BETHUNE-COOKMAN (2-5) BREWER,Quentin 6-12 4-6 16; TRAPP,Mikel 5-7 1-3 15; JOHNSON,Ricky 4-8 3-4 11; OWENS,Clemmye 4-11 0-0 9; OKAM,Ugo 4-5 0-0 8; DEAR,Delino 3-5 0-0 6; TAYLOR,Maurice 1-2 0-0 2; KYNARD,Tony 0-2 0-0 0. @BCUHoops Retools and Reloads For 2014-15 By Andreas Butler BCUathletics.com After experiencing a 7-25 campaign in 2013-14, Bethune- Cookman Men s Basketball head coach Gravelle Craig recognized immediately what it would take to get the Wildcats back on track. We ve added depth and size. We needed to get better, bigger and deeper at each position, Craig said. When we went recruiting, I told our coaches we needed to recruit starters. The guys we brought in have a chance to start. Last season s experiences included a 17-game losing streak and finishing out the year with just eight healthy players. While looking forward to putting last year behind us, Craig did find some silver linings. If you look at the positives, we got some people experience, Craig said. I have probably five guys who started last year who may not start this year. We expect good things form all our new guys, Craig added. We recruited starters at every position. We have a lot of team competition. One of the most touted newcomers is 6-foot-8 junior power forward/center and Toledo transfer Delino Dear. It was a basketball decision to come here. This is a great opportunity, said Dear. I can score on the block, which can open lanes for shooters. I bring leadership, experience and energy. He adds size and offense which is needed in this league. He gives us an inside presence and depth that we have lacked. Ricky Johnson returns after missing most of the 2013-14 season with concussion-related symptoms. He can play either the four or five spot on the floor, Craig said. Newcomers Denzil Dulin (Dundalk CC) and Jeffon Powell (Cecil CC) have also impressed the coaching staff. Returning guards Ricky Johnson and Mikel Trapp are excited about their new teammates. They will make a big impact, Johnson said. We have no freshmen, and these guys all played elsewhere. We have more of a post presence as well. We have a lot more size, which will address our weakness from a year ago, which was rebounding, added Trapp. Johnson missed most of last season with concussion-related symptoms. It feels great to be able to play the game that you love, Johnson said. It s great to be able to lace-up my sneakers and be a part of the team. He is back healthy and looking good. He is an experienced player that knows our system. He is another coach on the floor, Craig said of Johnson. Craig may use Trapp, who was named Second Team Preseason All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, in ways other than for his three-point shooting. Clemmye Owens led the Wildcats in scoring last along with Mikel Trapp. I might play him at the point some, Craig said. He knows what we re doing. Trapp welcomes the additional responsibility.
2014-15 PREVIEW (CONTINUED) ODDS AND ENDS DUNKS OKAM (3) POWELL (2) CHARGES TAKEN Travis Elliott I just go out there and do whatever is needed, he said. B-CU also returns sophomore guard Clemmye Owens who was an All-MEAC rookie selection, and led the team in scoring last season with an average of 11.3 points per game. He has gotten better, Craig said of Owens. He grasps everything better, and he is taking better shots. He s becoming more efficient. You can see the difference. Senior guard Maurice Taylor, sophomore guard Tony Kynard and senior center Travis Elliott also return to the B-CU lineup. They, along with newcomers 6-foot-6 junior forward Quinton Brewer (Gordon CC) and 7-foot graduate center Ugo Okam (Harvard) round out an experienced roster. The Wildcats were picked to finish 10th in the MEAC this season. It s a catch-22, Craig said. I think it s easier to motivate the players. I would be motivated either way. We can use this to show the team what people think of them. The players have incentive, commented Craig. The Wildcats' season may come down to two things. We need to stay healthy, and we need guys to step up, said Craig. #BCUhoops SCORED FIRST POINTS JOHNSON FT FG BREWER 3FG DULIN FG TRAPP FG 3FG OWENS FG FIRST OFF THE BENCH Dear xx (2) Elliott xx (2) Kynard xxx (3) Owens xx (3) CONSECUTIVE GAMES WITH 3FG Trapp_ XXXXXX (6) CONSECUTIVE DOUBLE FIGURE SCORING Trapp XXXX (4) CONSECUTIVE DOUBLE FIGURE REBOUNDING Brewer X (1) IT S YOUR BIRTHDAY...DRINK POWERADE LIKE IT S YOUR BIRTHDAY: Three Wildcats have in-season birthdays: Delino Dear 11/15 Troy Simmons 2/17 Ricky Johnson 2/17

Former Bethune-Cookman basketball standouts Adrien Coleman and Garrius Holloman reconfirmed on October 9 what that Disney World ride has been saying all these years. It IS a small world, after all, when former teammates from a small HBCU are on the same basketball court again literally an ocean away from home facing off in Finland. Holloman posted a double-double of 30 points and 10 rebounds for Lappeenranta NMKY, while Coleman had 17 points and seven rebounds for Korihait, who trailed by three after the first period but pulled in the third quarter. Since that meeting, Holloman has rejoined Kataja Basket, a team in the Korisliiga, Finland s top league, for the Euro Challenge. Coleman and Korihait are undefeated (12-0) in the First Division. STARLING DOWN UNDER: After his quest to play Australian football was sidelined, and then having the coach who signed him to play basketball dismissed, Starling s resolve added with his basketball ability has resulted in him making Central Australian Basketball League (CABL) history for his Woodville Warrior club. Starling, in addition to being named league MVP by the players, became the first Woodville player to receive the league s highest honor the Woollacott Medal, voted on by the league s referees to recognize the fairest and most brilliant player at the State League level. He capped off the season with a 36-point, six-rebound effort as the Warriors claimed the CABL championship with an 80-78 win over the West Adelaide Bearcats. THERE S NOTHING WRONG WITH OHIO, EXCEPT THE SNOW AND THE RAIN: In addition to producing four NBA Hall of Famers and a shooting certain guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Ohio has also been a strong recruiting area for the current B-CU basketball team. ABOUT BETHUNE-COOKMAN UNIVERSITY: Bethune-Cookman University or B-CU is a private historically black university in Daytona Beach, Florida. Mary McLeod Bethune founded the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School in 1904. The school underwent several stages of growth and development through the years and in 1923, it merged with the Cookman Institute of Jacksonville, Florida and became a co-ed high school. A year later in 1924, it became affiliated with the Methodist Church. By 1931, the school had become a junior college. Bethune was a key figure in the development of the Civil Rights movement. She helped paved the way for Jackie Robinson to play his first spring training game in Daytona Beach in 1946 the year before he broke the modern Major League color barrier. The school became a four-year college in 1941. On February 14, 2007, the Board of Trustees approved the name Bethune-Cookman University after the institution established its first graduate program.
