Uploading Videos to the Streaming Service **NOTE: Please ensure you have acquired the rights required to video stream any copyrighted material. Login to the Blackboard Portal and select the My Apps page. Click on the Manage Streaming Web Videos link and you will be brought to the Niagara College Video Streaming Service website page. 2. You may be required to update your Java version. Click on your Windows Start button, in the Search Program and Files box type in the word Java, and select Configure Java from the search results window. Please read the General Information and Note about acquiring video rights. You will be requested to log in to the streaming service. Click on the Connect tab (just above the Generate Blackboard External Link section. Type in your Niagara College Username and Password. Click on the Connect button. The Local System side (left side of window) will default to your Desktop folder but you can navigate through your folders to find the files you will be uploading. Once logged in you will see your Remote System Directory and files (right side of window). 1. You will now search for the video file to upload to the service. Using the yellow folder button, located in the Local System window on the left, browse to where the file is located. Once you find the file, left click on it and drag it over to the right side Remote System window, or alternatively, right click the file to bring up a menu of choices. ***Your video file must be in MP4 or Flash Video (FLV) format. If your video file is in any other format (SWF, MPG, AVI, etc.) then it must be converted before being uploaded. Uploading any other video format will result in a video that cannot be played. 2. When the upload process has completed you will see the file within the Streaming Server (Remote System) window. Now it is time to generate the Blackboard External Link. 3. In the Username text box, please enter your username. 4. In the Filename text box, you must enter the name of the video file which you uploaded to the server. The name must be entered exactly the same, including the extension. If a file is in a folder you must include the full path. Ex: jsmith\folder\nci.mp4 ***If your department has a shared folder and you want to generate the link for a file within a shared department folder use that folder name as the Username. 5. Click the Generate URL button. This will create the URL (link) to the video on the Streaming Server. 6. Click the Test URL button to ensure both the file and URL have been created successfully. If the video starts to play, then the video link is good. You can close the window. If the video does not play and you receive an error message, ensure the Video name is typed exactly as shown within the Streaming Server window. 7. In the URL text box, you must select (highlight) the entire content. Once this is completed, you will need to copy the URL. There are many different methods to copy selected text. You can right-click and select copy from the menu or you can use the CTRL+C keyboard shortcut. 8. Depending on where you would like to have this video viewed by your students (Course Documents, External Links, etc...) you will need to create an External Link within Blackboard. In the example below, the External Link will be created in the Course Documents content area. Go to the Course Documents link. Click on the Build Content button and select Web Link. Niagara College Blackboard Support / Sept 2015 Page 7
Enter a name into the Name text box, and paste the URL (completed in Step 15 of this document) into the URL text box. Complete the rest of the Blackboard settings within the Create Web Link webpage. Page 8
