Course Description: Italian 101 teaches the essentials of Italian language and culture needed for proficient communication, and includes basic exercises in listening comprehension, speaking, writing, and reading both online and within the classroom. Conducted in Italian. 3 credit hours. Course Objectives: The goals of this course include a beginning mastery of reading, writing, oral comprehension, oral communication, and knowledge of Italian culture. At the end of the course the student should be able to: 1 Understand and appreciate everyday elements of Italian culture. 2 Comprehend spoken Italian passages based on chapter topics and vocabulary by using common daily Italian terminology and trends. 3 Learn how to develop personal oral and written expression in Italian. 4 Read and understand written Italian passages based on chapter topics and vocabulary. 5 Write and speak in simple Italian which can be understood by a monolingual native Italian speaker. Student Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, the student will: 1. Converse in Italian about selected information based on chapter topics. 2. Correspond in written Italian to communicate thoughts and feelings. 3. Read passages to gain cultural awareness of the Italian-speaking world. 4. Use Italian in a variety of contexts outside the classroom such that a monolingual native Italian speaker can comprehend. 5. Present an oral report about chapter topics using resources from the Internet. 6. Compare Italian-speaking cultures in Italy with those in the Americas. 7. Contrast Italian-speaking cultures in Italy with those in the Americas. 8. Gradually Increase speed in spoken Italian using a variety of oral techniques. 9. Connect the study of Italian w/other disciplines. 10. Recognize the contributions of Italian-speaking citizens to the global community. Attendance and Classroom Policies: Class participation, contribution and actual speaking in the target language is crucial in language acquisition; therefore class attendance is mandatory. Any absence is going to affect students class participation and final grade. You must sign the class roll sign-in sheet. Being late or leaving early will result in a daily participation grade reduction. If under special circumstances, students need to miss classes, the following attendance policy will be applied: 2 % from the FINAL grade is deducted for EACH absence above 3. More than 7 absences will result in an AUTOMATIC F. Please note that attendance is recorded in this class in adherence to federal laws; thus, all students must sign the class roll for each class session. The purpose of this requirement is to expose you to cultural events beyond the classroom for cultural and linguistic breath, ability to choose events that correspond to personal preferences, and stimulate and motivate Italian acquisition beyond the classroom. You must attend one designated event and two optional events. Students MUST ATTEND A MINIMUM OF 1 EVENT until (s)he completes his or her cultural event requirements. A student may not wait until December in order to fulfill all of the cultural requirements for the class. Students must formalize their attendance on a sign-up sheet at every event. If you attend an event outside of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures you must bring a program, ticket stub, etc. In addition, you must fulfill any written requirements. Web devices may be used only to facilitate in-class work as indicated by your instructor. 9 All electronic devices including portable computers and web access devices must be turned off during quizzes and exams. 10 Non-enrolled ITL 101 students are not allowed in the class unless they are invited fluent Italian-speaking guests. Approval must be given by the instructor a week before class. Approval is given only if the fluent Italian-speaker meets with the instructor before the agreed upon date in order to coordinate their oral contribution to the class according to the lesson plans and the chapter topic. 11 All questions in class about in-class activities must be phrased in Italian. Please review your text and study possible prompts. It would be helpful to keep a list in your notebook. Italian apps (depends upon your electronic device) 15 During the semester, every Tuesday and some Thursdays, class will be conducted in the DFLL Foreign Language Media Services (language lab) in HB 412 16 Mandatory reading sessions (Lettura as indicated by your instructor) with Prof. Faki are in her office (HB 406) or in your designated classroom by appointment during the weeks indicated on the syllabus. Please see the standard listed times of your appointment within the syllabus and as posted on Canvas. Please be prepared to read the indicated pages of each chapter in a fluent manner upon entering the office. These are two (2) minute sessions. 17 There will be various (3-4) mandatory mini-orals / mini prueba oral (5 mins sessions) with Prof. Faki this semester on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays by appointment. You must post photo and the written component of the oral on facebook.com before your session. Absolutely no English in her office during orals. 18 Verb quizzes are given on a daily bases. Students must turn-in hand written conjugations of the indicated verbs and their respective subject pronouns on the day (Tuesdays and Thursdays) of the indicated verbs. Each conjugation must be written 4 5 times each. This will help you organize how to study your verbs. 19 You will have online culture/vocabulary/verb quizzes twice a week. They will be due on Wednesdays and weekends unless otherwise advised by your instructor. 20 In Lab online quizzes may come from 1) online Canvas, Quizlet or MyLab homeworks, diagnostics or cited assessments; or 2) quizlet; or 3) an online assessment indicated by your professor. 21 In cases of personal emergency absences please email and Canvas message your professor when it is feasible for first step alert purposes. Please read entries concerning absence policies, official documentation, excuse petition form and instructor email responses. 22 Official documentation NEEDED if you would like to request an excused absence, make-up oral or written test. Since multiply alerts diminish optimal grade acquisition speaking directly with your instructor about grade status is important. Homework Assignments: 1. Homework assignments will consist mainly of textbook, online activities, MyLab workbook and reading assignments in preparation for the next class. You must prepare and study the assigned pages for that class BEFORE the date indicated in the syllabus. You must do the MyLab workbook activities BEFORE you go to class. It is important that you complete the MyLab workbook exercises class-by-class throughout the chapter in order to reinforce the material covered during each class and receive credit. Each chapter assignment will be graded based on the completeness and the quality of the work. On the dates assigned MyLab will lock you out at midnight. Some activities will have an 11:59 pm deadline. Activities completed after the date assigned will not be graded. 2. Homework must be in ring binder tabbed format indicating sections for homework, quizzes, notes and verb conjugations. Homework completed after due date must be submitted online. Speak with your instructor about the details. 3. Verb index cards: Students will be required to prepare an index card for each verb listed on the syllabus and some verbs per chapter. Please bring extra blank note cards to class. 4. Chapter Vocabulary quizlet cards: Students will be required to upload chapter vocabulary on Quizlet and any Italian word they find challenging to remember and/or vocabulary indicated by the instructor. One side will indicate the Italian word in print. The opposite side will have a picture or photo illustrating the Italian word AND the word in English. 5. Italian Culture quizlet cards: Students will be required to upload Italian culture on Quizlet as indicated by the instructor. One side will indicate the cultural reference in Italian. The opposite side will have a picture or photo or chart illustrating the Italian cultural reference.

6. Students are required to attend and participate in the Italian Cultural Activities at least three (3) times during the semester. You may invite friends within and outside the UAB community to attend and share this experience with you. Extra Credit: Exams: Remind101 1. Present a tri-fold poster Winter Holidays in an Italian speaking country 2. Bring a friend to and/or man a table with the a power-point or tri-fold about an Italian Holiday. 3. Attend and actively participate in the Italian cultural events beyond the requirement. 4. Bring a friend to the Italian Cultural events. 5. Attend and organize an Italian cultural event. 6. Progressively work on an Italian app through the semester 1. There will be chapter exams: chapters 1-4. 2. There will be separate vocabulary, culture and verb quizzes for each chapter. You must use black or blue ink on all class assessments. 3. There will be a cumulative final exam. 4. The oral assessments will be mini oral (3-5 minutes) conversazioni in which your ability to communicate using the grammar and vocabulary covered in the semester will be evaluated. 5. You will be tested on all aspects of language learning through written homework (including work with the CDs and DVDs), classroom participation, online assessments, periodic quizzes and exams. 6.
